    The reason Capcom had so many Street Fighter characters is because the rivalry between SNK and Capcom was centered around their fighting game divisions. Of course Capcom's primary fighting game is Street Fighter. SNK is a fighting game centric company that's why you're likely not gonna get characters like Leon, Dante and etc in a CVS game. They don't fit the theme of the game. Capcom's side will feature characters in their fighting games, prominently being Street Fighter or Street Fighter related such as Rival Schools, Final Fight etc.

      While that may be true, in terms of why there was so many Street Fighter characters, I'm sure you know that many people took issue with that. A lot of people took issue with the fact that the Capcom roster, in those games, was almost entirely Street Fighter with barely any focus on anything else. If these games were called "SF vs SNK" or "SF vs KOF" then I'm sure people wouldn't have taken an issue with the Capcom roster, I know I wouldn't. Also, RE protagonists like Leon or Chris or Jill would fit well in a fighting tournament. If KOF can make Ikari Warrior characters work in a fighting game, then CVS can make RE characters work too. There are plenty of Capcom characters that aren't from fighting games but still can fit well in a tournament setting. And there is no guarantee that CVS3 is going to continue the theme of SF vs KOF. However, if they still want to make CVS3 mainly center around their fighting games, there is a way they can do that without flooding the Capcom roster with too many Street Fighter characters.

      @yukitoshimazaki620 CVS is a representation of the companies fighting games. The creator of Street Fighter was the same creator of the Fatal Fury franchise, which was the start of the rivalry between the two companies. CVS is the celebration of the fighting games between the two companies. Street Fighter is Capcom's most popular and well known fighting game. CVS is the only exption where you wouldn't get DMC, MegaMan, or RE characters because it's about fighting games. But to your point can that change, yes but it's not likely so I'd expect to see Street Fighter or other fighting game characters representing Capcom in a CVS3 game. And honestly I wouldn't want that to change because when you add in DMC, RE, and other non fighting game characters, it just makes it like every other crossover fighting that Capcom has. CVS is a unique crossover but it strictly represents the fighting games and that's what the rivalry between SNK and Capcom was always about.

      @@eaglesman19 I would argue that there is a decent chance it could change. The person who decided to make the CVS games focus on SF vs KOF was Hideaki Itsuno, as far as I understand. He was the planner of the first CVS and directed the second CVS. But Hideaki Itsuno left Capcom though so I doubt he will go on to work on CVS3. Also, when SVC Chaos rerelease was announced back in late July 2024, the poster to that game had it to where the Capcom side showed Ryu and Chun-li as the only Street Fighter reps whereas the other Capcom characters shown on the poster was Hugo, from Final Fight although he is in SF3, Red Arremer from Demon Crest, Demitri from Darkstakers, Tessa from Red Earth and Zero from Megaman Zero. I think this was on purpose. I believe SNK, or whoever made the poster, understood that showing Capcom characters from different franchises, on the poster, would appeal to a larger audience and get more people to buy SVC Chaos rather than just showing Street Fighter characters on the poster. I do think Capcom and SNK understand that if there is going to be a CVS3 or SVC Chaos 2, then they need to have the Capcom roster be a myriad of different franchises rather than an almost exclusive Street Fighter cast. Again, they can still focus on a fighting tournament without filling the roster with too many Street Fighters; they can bring in non-SF characters, even those who aren't from fighting games, that can fit well in a tournament setting.

      ​@@eaglesman19 No, not at all. I love KOF and like other SNK franchises. All I want is a Capcom vs SNK game to actually live up to what the title implies. I don't have a problem with the previous games themselves focusing on SF vs KOF; I just took issue with the fact that those games are called "Capcom vs SNK" when that title doesn't accurately represent what the games are actually about. I'm all for CVS having an identity of its own to diffrentiate itself from MVC. I'm just saying that if its going to be called Capcom vs SNK then I think the game should focus on what that title implies. And it could do that while maintaining a tournament setting without filling the roster with too many Street Fighters. I apologize if I'm keeping this going, but I do want to at least ask you something. Do you really think an almost exclusive Street Fighter cast is the only Capcom roster that would fit in a fighting tournament? There are plenty of characters from other franchises, including those from non-fighting games, that would fit in a tournament such as characters from Rival Schools, some characters from Darkstalkers, characters from Final Fight, characters from Saturday Night Slam Masters, protagonists characters from Resident Evil, Gene from God Hand, heck maybe even a Megaman character could fit in. Those are examples of non Street Fighter characters fitting in a fighting tournament and many of those characters are fighting game characters so a CVS3 game could still mainly focus on their fighting games while expanding the Capcom roster outside of just Street Fighter. A Capcom roster consisting of characters from the franchises I mentioned, along with Street Fighter, is not a roster you would see in a MVC game.

    This is a pretty good critique of the character designs, and I appreciate the use of fundamentals to evaluate what makes them (not) work. I think the explanations of their shape language and color palette were excellent. However, there are some things I began to notice with the video starting with the silhouette part. So, I would like to offer some critiques if you don't mind. I'm doing this because I see your talent and I think there are many ways you can improve off of here (though I am aware this is currently a 2 month old video). 1: The silhouette example using Terry was a bit of a stretch. It relies on too many factors that are hypothetical. It assumes that the viewer approaches Fatal Fury in the 90's, without having any former knowledge of it, and Terry was on the side of the cabinet (which you stated wasn't true). While I understand that you may have wanted to use an example that felt natural, the amount of factors make it feel convoluted and too highly specific. It would have been better if the whole arcade aspect was cut out. Just say something like "If someone were to show you a picture of Terry, which one of these would give you a better indication of the game he's from." That way, you don't have to waste time providing context to the scenario. 2: I feel like you didn't mention an important piece of context when evaluating why the designs don't work: Many of the designs contradict how that character actually plays. For example, the woman with the big red coat you showed is supposed to play like a speedy assassin, but the only thing in her design that indicates that is her knives. Nothing else about her would tip you off about her playstyle, especially not her over-sized bright red coat. 3: You mentioned how the colors don't work because they're too bright, but I think an important piece of context to acknowledge is that they were pretty clearly trying to do the Guardians of the Galaxy aesthetic. Now, that doesn't make them look any less rediculous, but viewing it from that lens could provide a more accurate analysis towards their design decisions. 4: While having examples was good, the way they were implemented was a little sloppy. There were a bunch of characters used and some of them were brought up several times; but in my opinion, either a different character should be used every time, or one example should be used throughout the entire video. That way, it won't make the viewer feel like they're forced to remember each character used so that they understand your points later in the video. 5: This is a complete nitpick and I'm not sure if it was intentional or not, but when showing the clips SF6 and Marvel Rivals, the gameplay audio should've been muted as it distracts from your analysis and is inconsistent with the rest of the video.

    I'd like to remember that the 400 million they spent on this game that could have paid for meals for millions of people went to a live service game that flopped in a week. Now I'm not saying Sony is obligated to feed the homeless, but it's a little frustrating to see them take that much money for granted, when others could really use it

    The voting feels pointless. 90% of the vote comes from "journalists". Only 10% will count coming from the gaming public.

      @@Atom.Storm. I know, I mention that towards the end of my video. It’s really crappy for sure. I think it’s fun to vote and 10% still counts for something, but they really need to change this system. If I was in charge I’d make it 70% public and 30% journalists panel. I’d also completely change that panel. NPR does not represent me as a gamer lol.

      @soullevel7930 I've heard the console versions don't reliably hit 60 fps which is a huge deal, and while the PC version has work around they require a computer more powerful than mine

    not putting Thor on the Marvel side is crazy you know disney would mandate he be in there he's to popular these days to be left out. i also think Dr Strange would also probably be a mandated character as i said the mcu has just made him to big to not be there. not to mention they have both been in the last 2 games

      It could mean that. In this case however, it has come out that, many of the artists could not speak out about the issues with the character designs because the people in charge wouldn't want to hear any criticism, even if it was constructive.

    As an artist, to this day i still use concord as a baseline of how to not design characters. Its funny because even characters i make up on the spot have a more unique look and silhouette at least

    Art is subjective rhetoric should stop. It's very clear it's not purely subjective to some degree or else this garbage wouldn't have failed. What's the number percentage, idk 70-30 some will say. Personally I believe it's 80-20.

      Art is subjective but when you start selling your art in bulk it stop being purely art and become a product and a good product is not subjective. The very basic definition of good product is that people want it and willing to shell money for it.

    I watched this hoping I’d get an answer as to why That Skinny Green Guy Everyone Uses To Symbolize Concord makes me feel ill every time I look at him. I did not get an answer, but it was very interesting anyway.

      I think it's the fact that he's the lazy kind of alien, where it's baically just a human with weird features tacked on, combined with the overly realistic artstyle causing his design to fall straight into the uncanny valley. Additionally, that awful shade of green they used for his skin just makes him look like he's sick. In other words, he makes you uncomfortable because he looks less like an alien, and more like an incorrect human.

    The problem is these characters are originally drawn in a comic design. Translating that to realism creates something really surreal. It just doesn't work. I saw the artwork of the Designer and they're actually good. The problem is they didn't look at the materials and how to translate that into realism.

      Yeah I looked at some of the concept art after I made this video and while I still think that the designs have issues overall, they do look more appealing in concept form.

    At 15:49 you got jabali. Im also noticing pronouns in the top right (never knew they did this but that's hilariously bad), but compare jabali to infernus from deadlock. Weird cream and cyan with tinted glasses, just a normal dude. Vs infernus, just black and red, evil smugness and it doesnt surprise me if you say he's a demon bartender because that's exactly what he looks like. Deadlock beta characters are just so much better and half arent even fully done.

    Concord's designs feel like shopping lists of personality traits, that are disconnected with each-other. Deadlock's Infernus is a calm, collected Bartender with a spark of fire. His design perfectly gets the point across that he is a cool, calm, collected guy that uses fire. His backstory tells that he is from another world, had a criminal past, and decided to become a bartender. While this run-down from me is dim witted at best. If you take a look at the details, you get a compelling design that perfectly gets the point across, and makes sense for him. His role as a chill bartender guy that can kick ass perfectly fits, due to his physigue, criminal past, and him being able to just fucking scorch you. He is an understanding guy with many a tale to tell, that is also inviting, and willing to listen to your stories. He seems like he'll be fun at parties, and do cool tricks. But his other side commands a level of respect and authority, and he won't back down from a necessary fight. His fire gimmick perfectly fits to his past, and his Voice gives just as much vibes of a chill thug. His less ordinary origins, while looking odd for his power level, do a great job at building the world. And giving you an expectation of what to expect from beings from other worlds. And makes perfect sense within Deadlock's lore. His backstory ties in very well with the world and his design. While i am far less knowledgable on Concord, Most Concord designs feel like lists of completely unrelated personality traits, that make absolutely zero sense. They don't give you the slightest interpretation of who they are, neither their backstory. Imagining a backstory for them would most likely be just pulling whatever narrative you want out of your ass.
