Blitz is a strange time control
Переглядів 502 години тому
Blitz is like the fast food of chess. Equivalent to the UA-cam shorts of UA-cam. Similar to the massed produced mobile game ads. Akin to short-term gratification vs. long-term success. A different game entirely.

How to Farm ELO OTB - Picking Tournaments + Using Chess Databases
Переглядів 7221 годину тому
Picking your tournaments right will expedite your rating gain. TLDR: Play small tournaments, record your games in a database so you have insights on opponents you've played before. Hopefully this video helps and good luck farming! Adapt, Improvise, Overcome! You may notice that this I am doing a voice over instead of talking live. This is because I stop thinking when I'm talking and there's a l...
Offering draws is hard

Some people are very stubborn (I respect that). Title is mostly unrelated (I am going to make a guide on offering draws OTB soon). Just talking about a funny situation that happened to me a few days ago. Cropping is still a little finicky, please ignore :( More informative video coming this weekend probably.

Why Your Blitz Rating is Higher Than Your Rapid

It's very likely that your rapid and blitz ratings are very different. In either case, it may be beneficial to practice the skillset you're worse at.
2 things the engine does better than you
Переглядів 18414 днів тому
Developing my own game engine has taught me a few things about how to be successful as a chess player. ofc real engines are much more complicated (pruning, pulling from databases, etc.), but I believe simplifying it makes it easier to focus on what's important. To improve depth: do tactics. To improve sense and evaluation: play more and review your games (when looking over past games, really po...

Congrats man
I'm a new suscriber!!! Could you please give me some tips for improve in chess? I would like to have 1500 elo in chess, but at the moment, I'm 900 elo
Hey there! So I'll just start with some more practical tips and suggestions on how to get started/keep improving (as for the philosophy behind it, take a look at the pinned comment on this video: ua-cam.com/video/ZjfnRSl3CUg/v-deo.html). 1. MOST IMPORTANT: do tactics. I recommend like 10-15 a day, no more really. 100% use lichess over chess.com, as chess.com has fallen off as of recently. 2. Play rapid/longer time controls. You'll see me playing blitz on this channel since it's more fun to watch and has better retention, but in reality I almost never play it. If you're really looking to play OTB or just get better overall, longer time controls are it. 15min, 30min, 60min, up to you. Longer time controls really TEST if you can find the right moves then you have nearly infinite time, which is much more instructive than blitz will ever be. It's like playing a piece of music slowly first to get all the notes right, then speeding up as you get better. Not the other way around. So naturally as you get better that rapid, you'll get better at blitz. Of course, if you really want to play blitz, that's fine too (it's fine to relax after all). So those are my two tips for now (there are more, but just focus on these two for now). More tactics and longer games really stress improvement. That's my take at least. Thanks for reading this whole mess and thanks again for watching. Best of luck grinding and cya :)
same here hoe long u been playing?
Around 10 years now
@ damn I’ve been playing for a few months I’m 950 right now

nice game, do you stream?
Considering it. I’ll look into it asap
This is a fever dream
This will be credited as the birth of the "double pawn" meta. Seriously though, while double pawns are typically frowned upon, its interesting how effective it worked defensively. Looks like he wanted to take advantage of the open h file after you castled and just started throwing material at it. Good show
Why do you want to be a chess youtuber? Why not a regular youtuber who is entertaining (if not really that funny)
There are two tracks I want to focus on. 1. Chess commentary, where I talk mostly and the chess serves as background noise. 2. Chess experience / tip videos, where I attempt to share a few things I've learned playing tournaments and just studying chess in general. So yeah that's my idea. At the end of the day, I think chess is fun so I like to play and talk about it.
I like these short kind of 1-2 game commentary videos ngl
and mic quality is also good btw, u sound professional. also i like the way u talk, ot is pleasant to listen. good luck bro
that is so useful, thank you. i wish u post more videos like this

I respect the brutal honesty, but you do yourself a disservice by saying you're not good. Even if you aren't GM, less than 5% of chess players are at 2000 or above. 95% of players could potentially pick up something from understanding your thought process. The same way you can't learn basic arithmetic and then expect to grind derivatives/integrals, you can't jump from 500-1000 rating to GM level accuracy. It helps understanding the approach in between. Also, you say you aren't funny but the thumbnail and title is what made me click the video. "Thinking is hard" actually made me chuckle on an otherwise solemn morning. Can't say how you find your niche but the algorithm brought you a new subscriber. Look forward to seeing your journey!
Also, watching a genuine and humble chess youtuber is a breathe of fresh air in respect to some other GMs I've been watching since returning to chess. It was nice to not hear commentary loaded with sarcasm, laced with elitism, or just ripping opponents for their "obvious mistakes"
@@whoisdonvagabond Thanks man. I started this channel mainly to share my experience having played so long and few unconventional tips while not being overly full of myself or blatantly generic. Also yeah I tend to be a little self-deprecating sometimes because I feel like I haven’t improved that much for the time I’ve invested. Having played this game for over 9 years, many of my original friends are already NMs, FMs, whatnot and I feel a little left behind. But that’s a story for another day. Thanks again for the support, I’ll try my best to keep it up.
So Im not a chess player, though I know the basics "develop pieces, castle, principles of attacking" etc. But I wonder what exactly does one need to become actually decent at chess. I feel like every time I play chess it feels so overwhelming with all these positions at the midgame and yeah what I've been hearing from others is that you just need to learn openings and tactics. But I mean what's fun about that?! Anyways cheers
I feel (the way that worked for me) the easiest way to get better at chess (especially from ground 0) is to do tactics. I get how it's boring and tedious, but an analogy would be like dunno, if you're an artist you need to do drills, sketches, etc, before you can actually draw anything fun. You can't play sports if you don't go to the gym kinda feeling you know. Tactics are the PREQUISITE to a good player. Every minute you spend on the tedium of tactics will be repaid ten fold when you cook your opponents. Ok so when you do tactics, you aren't just training your ability to see forks, pins, and other patterns (i.e it's not just memorization), but you're also training your ability to calculate depth. DEPTH is what makes middle games less foggy and gives you a sense of stability. Secondly, at the core, all chess players need to have a sort of inner compass of determining "is this position good for me?" I sorta call this VIBES but really it's just positional evaluation (this comes with experience, this is the part where you play more and have fun). OK so IN PRACTICE how to get started (this part is what worked for me when I was starting out, may be different from person to person). Create a lichess account, do ~10 tactics a day (give or take, no more than 20). When doing them, emphasize the WHY not the result (as in don't care about your rating, and if you get smth wrong really ask yourself WHY did I miss the correct answer and why is it correct?). Then play rapid, no blitz. I play blitz in my videos because it has better viewer retention but I reality I almost never play it (rapid my beloved). FINAL NOTE: Ofc openings, endgames, theory in general, etc. are really really important, but personally I didn't learn a single opening past like move 3 until I was like 800 uscf. I feel as long as you follow the 3 opening principles (control center -> develop pieces -> castle), you should be able to fake it till you fake it until like 1500 chess.com (i.e don't worry too much about opening unless you really like learning them (I hate them 0_0)). Ok I sorta rambled but if any doesn't make sense lemme know, thanks for you time :)
u randomly popped on my recommendation you're channel seems fun great job, also i think he just cursed you in Spanish lol
that's so funny with no context lmao thanks for pointing that out
Play 1. d4 nf6 2. c4 c5! 3. d5 b5! 4. cxb5 a6! 5. bxa6 Benko 🤑🤑
here's a few simple tips to make your videos better sidewalk. fix your microphone (this is integral because i was drawn in via the thumbnail but immediately feel like swiping off as its unbearable) (this is even MORE important when you lack social proof, eg. low views low subs), and change your OBS to where it records in 1080p to 4k at least. these sound simple, but to a certain degree, going viral IS simple, so don't mess up the easy things. i wish you luck and take care.🖖
Great, I'll definitely implement these tips. I did order a better quality mic which should be arriving soon + the obs fix should be relatively easy. I'm new to this so any help is appreciated. Thanks for spending the time to give me some guidance :)
@@ssidewalk no problem. for the time being, use your phone microphone to record, and also another thing i noticed is your video ideas are very bland. gameplay videos of chess are in the most absolute abundance, you need to have unique ideas, just like gothamchess for example or alexandra botez. on this video, your thumbnail was close to top-tier, so a viewer would expect a top tier video on why you hate the queen's gambit, not a dry humour, bad microphone, low resolution sloppy gameplay. i hope you dont take offense, and you implement what ive said. i cant really help you any further so the balls in your court now. take care bro! 🔥🔥🔥
So just got u on my recommended list, u seem pretty chill to watch:)
Lmao getting called puta and responding with no hablo espanol, madlad
I had no idea after all :)
4:29 you missed the fork a few times
is that worth it though? i feel like it would make his king very weak. idk though im a chess noob
Took a look at it with the engine. Apparently it's not the best since yes as @greasehead9969 mentioned, it does weaken my king significantly. However it does still win at the end of the day (best move is Qh5 apparently).
Play horwitz defense into a Dutch. Bye bye queens gambit. This is how I avoided my old rivals pet system.
Looked into it. Seems promising.
