How to Fix Sticky Rubberized Surfaces on Dell Latitude

    AvE explained once that the cause of the stickiness is fat and urea decomposing the butyl nitrile polymer. By degreasing you stop the process, but don't be too aggressive, or the rubber will turn into crumble. I guess removing the degreaser with Iso or non-denatured rubbing alcohol, helps much. The last step is glycerine, imhost.

    fyi, I have another car that had a leaking sun roof. I did not try to seal it shut. One issue is that the drain tubes from the sunroof can shrink over time and get disconnected. And changing the sunroof seal sometimes stops a leak. It worked for me on my Volvo C30.

    • @therealmichaelphelps
      @therealmichaelphelps 2 місяці тому

      i had diagnosed all of the possibilities for the sunroof on my car, i actually made a huge mistake of sealing the sunroof, and yet water was still leaking in, thats when i discovered the leak had nothing to do with the sunroof drain tubes, i actually tested all of the drain tubes and didnt see a single leak, but i did see in the corners of the windshield and how they were lifting away from the body, and many people in vibe/matrix forums said that does happen on these cars.

      @@therealmichaelphelps I have a warranty on my windshield so long as the issue is not rust. I am hoping that the seal is just coming undone where it is leaking. I had a major windshield leak on my Volvo. The seal on that windshield was coming apart all over so the leaks were massive. I emailed Volvo and they agreed to give me a free goodwill windshield so long as the local Volvo dealer agreed the seal was defective. This is a quick fix. However, if you need a windshield replacement at some point, the technician may decline to do the job due to the sylicone being a contaminant. Urithane used in windshield installation does not bond well with sylicone, and in some cases, the sylicone can deteriorate the existing urithane, making the leak worse.

    • @therealmichaelphelps
      @therealmichaelphelps 8 місяців тому

      how long did you spend scrubbing the surface with the degreaser? Because i spent a good 10 minutes on that one step alone, i think i tried to make that clear, and it depends also on how badly sticky it is, you might have to really clean it, but not so bad that the surface peels off. Also with the klasse after you clean it really good, i applied it several times, letting it sit on there a minute, and re applying it a couple times in between and buffing it off.

    Today I fixed my sticky Dell Latitude e6330 by replacing the palmrest. The new assembly cost under $20 on eBay (compare with the cost of Klasse), and came with the trackpad, etc. But before I thought of replacing the palmrest, I saw your video. I used Turtle Wax Trim Restorer, as recommended elsewhere, because it's easier to find and cheaper. And it greatly reduced the stickiness. Maybe Klasse works even better, but I sense that these finishes are not intended for things you handle, especially if you don't want to transfer the finish to other things that you touch.

    • @therealmichaelphelps
      @therealmichaelphelps 11 місяців тому

      everyone has to find their way, i personally find the armor all alternatives leave a petroleum based oil behind but that process actually ages plastic and rubber surfaces faster, its fine for a temporary fix but its not long lasting. Klasse is acrylic based and doesnt leave petroleum behind and is dry to touch. And every laptop is different, some have replaceable palmrests and others its the entire top lid and far too much hassle to replace, and then if you find a good product you can use that product on other things too.

    • @user-og2mf9sd7b
      @user-og2mf9sd7b 11 місяців тому

      @@therealmichaelphelps ... Thanks for that distinction about Klasse. I hadn't picked that up from the previous discussion, and will definitely file that advice. The palmrest replacement in fact was time-consuming. However, the improved functionality of a fresh trackpad was unexpected - from long experience with old refurb Dell's, I'd gotten used to the imprecision. Plus the palmrest I got came with the fingerprint reader - so that, too. And it was a great opputunity to clean out the inside of the laptop.

    Today, I fixed my sticky Dell Precision 5510. Get a microfiber towel (or other screen cleaning cloth). Spray a little bit of screen cleaning substance on the towel. It needs to be specific fluid for cleaning screens. Put some chalk powder on the towel. I used baby chalk powder. Rub that on the areas surrounding the keyboard. When the powder was absorbed by the towel, I even rubbed it on the entire keyboard itself (be careful not to get the chalk powder underneath the keys!). Since the towel was very slightly wet, the dry, white chalk powder could be rubbed out so that the black surface of the laptop wouldn't look too white. The rubbing out of the chalk powder took me some time, to get the surface looking black again. My towel was too dry, I assume.
