    I had a 1987 Dodge Ram 250 Slant 6 with god knows how many miles on it.. The U joint went out also but I can't say anything bad about the van because it made it around the country twice and I had it for like 4 years. I'm just lucky the U joint went out once I was already home at a local bar. I sold it to a mechanic I knew in the bar for $50 and two weeks later he fixed it and sold it to someone else.

    Longest tour I did was a week snd a half of the United Kingdom (which is where I’m from) . Sharing hotel rooms with three other males to keep costs down. That was long enough and more than enough traveling for me, especially with the characters I had to tour / play with. Needs must I suppose but I’m not sure I could have handled those much longer American tours. If your not a original member of the band and haven’t had all those years to bound with other band members before the ‘big’ record company signing and touring the non music moments of a tour are very tough

    First off, great documentary. At first I was wondering if I could make it thru 2 hours being that all the stories and scenarios were so back of hand, but the familiarity and relatability set in. The laughs start about midway thru for me culminating in the biggest ones from the Tight Bro’s complaint log (the actual entries 😂). I was in Behead The Prophet No Lord Shall Live with Quitty and Dave Harvey (Tight Bros/Nudity), and know a few other subjects in the doc from Bellingham (James Burns, you were funny as usual, Ty) and having toured with Thrones, Joe is always somehow a sight for sore eyes and tours solo often so it was great to hear his perspective. Imo, Dave and Quitty left out the BEST part of our BTP Fargo story: between the two huge floods on either side of our date there (which was on the national flood alert), the audience we played for and their energy, because they had been sandbagging all day out of necessity for their community, was WAY better than average and fucking off the hook high on the energy scale! As I recall, they were bouncing off the walls!!! Thanks for including falsetto coping mechanism voice tho. That produced some laughs (at least when we started doing it at that diner in Fargo) and could be recommended to those on tour when things seem crappy.

    Was in a band for three years; went on tour once (1991) 6-1/2 weeks, 23 states, 7,862 miles; a life changing event for all of us. Same kinds of stuff - breakdowns, awful hotels, in the summer with no AC, no credit card (cash only), a "calling card" for long distance calls, no email (obviously), staying with people we just met, etc. Anxious to hit the road with somehow getting home being the ultimate destination. Music has become life. Loved the documentary :)

    Touring is a lot like joining a gang or the military. It tests your health, spirit and mental resolve. You will never forget the people or the bonds of the people you tour with. And if you survive it you will know if you want to continue to pursue music or go get a regular job

    I'd like to actually hear some of these bands. I'm sorry but a lot of indie bands can't play. Yeah I know you're hip bla bla bla. I've played gigs with more than a few. They can't actually play. Yes Zeppelin was great for a reason. The Beatles were great for a reason.

    We toured all over Ontario in the late 80's and early 90's. Booked into bars for 6 nights, 3 sets a night. It sucked. Plain and simple. Playing was fine but there was no money. Enough to eat and buy gas for the vehicles and thats it. And when you get home, the landlord wants his money. 😂 aint no money dude....sorry. I'm still hungover...

    I’ve been playing in pub bands in the UK for about 40 years , I started with my best mate Rick Allen (Def Leppard) obviously he made it to superstardom and I stayed playing pubs / clubs , this is the reality of playing in a band for the vast majority of musicians I can totally identify with this film 😄🙄🎸👍

    One small criticism: I wish there were more folks interviewed; country folks, metal, etc. The same six people's takes gets redundant after an hour. Minor gripe, great doc. in general. 8/10 ! 🎸📽🏴

    • @ericfundingsland
      @ericfundingsland 6 місяців тому

      Some context - Originally this movie was just going to be my friends telling tour stories, that's it. As I started interviewing people it blossomed into more of a "why do people tour at this level?" narrative and then I got a few famous (but not too famous) names in there. Since I run in more of the indie rock circle, yes, most of the musicians come from that kind of music. I sort of have some metal people in there though- Joe Preston was in High on Fire and The Melvins and Hozoji is in Helms Alee which I guess might be considered more "hard rock", but still. No country though. That would have been interesting for sure.

    Really really good film. I made many tours playing Jazz in Europe and there are parallels with rock tours in US. We musicians play because we have to and in the end it is the music that is important. I loved this film. It is really inspired and deserves to be seen and celebrated.

    Great video. Our band toured in Europe in the eighties 🤣🤦, hard work but great fun. Ford Transit van and a shedload of guesthouses / B&Bs, very few venues with changing rooms. After the first month we developed a band strategy called ‘Find a friend night’. We’d all separate during the break and try to secure accommodation for the whole band for the night from a friendly audience member... making the final decision after a quick conflab at the end of the last set. This worked really well and we met a couple of kind folk who welcomed us into their home several times in the months we were passing back through their town. Dinner was always hit and miss, lots of junk food unfortunately. Audiences were brilliant however with busy nights everywhere we went, can’t complain, great experience.

    I remember people coming up to me in some god forsaken place when I toured with my blues bands and I'd hear people shoot me a compliment, then talk about how they wish they could play and how awesome it is to be in a band going to different places every night, meeting new people, seeing new places. At which point I'd say, "Thank you! That's so nice of you to say that.", then I'd go about educating them on the reality of my shitty touring existence. The bad food. The late night drives. The fear of having your gear stolen. Having your gear stolen. Van breaking down. Trailer bolt frozen. Not being able to actually do any sight seeing. Worried constantly about where you're going to use the bathroom and sleep. Sometimes there being no accommodations meaning sleeping in the van.. which sucks. Especially for our bass player who's built like a house and is 6'2. Not enough room for him and the snores he'd let out would set off the richter scale a state over. Pretty much living on an emotional scale that went from mild amusement to boredom to absolute misery, until it's time to play. Once we got to playing, all that stuff would disappear for 3 hours. Then another hour of mostly forced smiles and saying hi to folks and socializing and making sure to thank the owner so that they'd be motivated to let you play in their joint again. Then packing up your gear. Finding somewhere to sleep.. and on it went for months. At the end of my discourse, they'd ask, "Well.. if it's so horrible, why do you do it?". My answer? "Because I can't help it." Great film thanks for posting :)
