Old 3D healing to new 1D healing caused the 1-shot meta, defensive power creep and stressful healing
Переглядів 2,3 тис.9 місяців тому
From Vanilla to Legion WoW had a three dimensional healing framework. Healers healed three types of damage: 1. Unavoidable mechanics damage 2. Avoidable damage 3. Unavoidable tank damage But Legion made tanks self-sufficient which removed the third category and ensured healing gameplay would focus on just mechanic damage and failure damage. So the high end content where all possible damage is a...
Legion changed the game so much we are still playing its template

Legion set the content template for every expansion since 2016. It is the expansion that has defined an era that likely will continue, even into 11.0. It did so by introducing M and the concept of mega-dungeons that would be introduced in every .1 or .2 patch since 7.1 with the Return to Karazhan and then split into two dungeons for M . Preservation getting an interesting Kiss/Curse talent as well as their own version of PI or Blessing of Summer. Chronowarden is by far the coolest and most exciting Hero Talent tree we've seen so far for 11.0 and the War Within. Warlords of Draenor has the reputation for the worst World of Warcraft expansion because it had a 14 month content drought after Hellfire Citadel was released. But Mists of Pandaria had the same drought after Seige of Orgrimmar but doesn't get the same hate. Not being a die hard raider at the time, I didn't think Warlords was that bad and I wouldn't rate it as poorly as many others likely do. W...

Mists of Pandaria is still my favourite expansion of World of Warcraft. The Half-Hill farm, the Emissaries and World Bosses that dropped mounts, Archeology, reputation commendations, Isle of Thunder and the Throne of Thunder, even the Siege of Orgrimmar, were all great to me. I enjoyed MoP more than any expansion before or since with only Legion and introduction of M coming close to that level ...

You gotta do this for elden ring and shadow of the erdtree
They really need to take healers out of the game if they do as you say and leave in tank healing healers HEAL not do dps
Its already not used.
2:43 Answer to the title of the video: "Honor Level 500".
For me the only playable healer right now is Holy priest. You must do damage as a healer is keys (if you don't just please just stop playing a healer), and with holy priest sometimes i do more overall dps than a tank (my average is 200k on this week). Healing as holy feels good too.
Now I feel like my hpriest play must be wrong because I always end dungeons at like 70% mana. Am I not smiting enough? I tend to just overheal top off instead of smite sometimes because I figured holy smite wasn't that great anyway.
I found so long as I'm just pressing my Holy Words, keeping PoM on CD and spamming damage with the occasional FH, my mana is fine. As soon as I need to use FH a lot and bosses start lasting 3m+, my mana is gone.
I have a friend who's part of the trade cartel and that whole world is insane. Just knowing made me not care for professions.
The way you play holy priest sounds so wrong lol. I don't know if you play without the tier set or what but you shouldn't need to cast filler single target heals that often and most of the time it's done under surge of light or just to refresh your holy word faster. 80% of the throughput is holy words and prayer of mending
i reroll hpally as to be my alt since ive been really a healer role in any mmos but wow really made me quit the role, and trying hpally this season didnt even helped getting back to it. had to press everything just to survive, kinda sucks since hpally feels so satisfying to play at and my kind of lore.
I have been playing fistweaver this season after playing druid in season 1 and pally in season 2, currently at 2800 IO. Fistweaver is a really fun spec to play and you can put some serious HPS just like the casting build if you know what you doing however, the main drawback is the fact is a melee build. If you can't do damage you're stuck using your regular heals which are still great for spot healing but group wide not so much. You REALLY need to position well your faeline stomp and make sure it will not be on CD if moving out of it and I think that's why you don't see that many monks at the top M+. HPS is there and damage is pretty decent but there are some conditions to make it happen. Meanwhile druid just presses 3 buttons and 500k HPS.
See I actually disagree. If you were running mythic+ and your mana regen'd between each pull by itself, you would be able to spam even more expensive spells and not care about your mana efficiency nearly as much while doing chain pulls. All this would do is drastically speed up how quickly Mythic+ goes while removing resource management from the healer skill set. Who cares how many expensive heals you cast if you'll be full for the next pull anyway?
Should definitely try every spec geared and in higher keys. rShaman can’t for example survive on chain heal spam in higher keys. It’s a shame that the set isn’t more interesting since you’ve basically played the same build for the entire expansion. Just watch Laren who doesn’t even touch chain heal. You’ll be out of mana after a pack or two if you’re spamming CH. MW can play with other trinkets (don’t really understand how one trinket can ruin a spec if you don’t even play the correct build) Fistweaving uses tiger palm more than enough to proc EotT and comapring the dmg to other healers MW still competes with rDruid (at +10 and up). People just see MW nerfs and jumps on rDruid instead and it just so happens that this season favor rDruid’s healing type more. Not a lot of one shots that cant be prevented by group defensives and more sustained healing required, comapred to s3 where basiaclly everyone (even dps) went fyrakk to survive mechanics.
Tome of Unstable Power will also proc off of Chi Burst and Fyrakk's Tainted Rageheart damage pulse. You only need to hit Tiger palm like every 8 sec or so to get a chance to proc it. It accounts for about 18% of my damage in +11's so far. Yeah I spent a week with it and didn't get one proc until I talked to a guildie as well. Cheers.
Yeap, a HW:Serenity can heal a player to full, and the only button that does this on hpal is lay on hands. Holy shock heals for 10% hp. I benched my hpal until TWW, I dont think there 's gonna be a tuning patch this season
How is resto druid overtuned? It's definitely one of the hardest healers to master and the difference between a good one and an amazing one is absolutely massive. On top of that it demands knowledge of the dungeon and it's completely opposite of doing nothing and people living. You have to preramp every major dmg event, otherwise you don't heal shit. Not to mention doing damage in the meanwhile. Sounds like a lie to support your other claims.
Yeah i was like wtf is he talking about. Im a new resto druid, 486 ilvl and just doing mythic 0s im stressing tryna keep everyone alive
It is massivly overtuned this season, winning in HPS, DPS and Survival. And in Mana. Yes, it has a high skill cap but it also they are the top healer in 80% of All seasons that we had so far since Legion. And this season, the gap is massive. Remember Holy Pala got nuked to the gesund after season 2? Druid is even more far ahead atm.
Ryphe on Frostmourne is his druid. Check out the keys he did and you will know everything you need to know 🙂
@davidschutz693 You are confusing metrics here. Druid is not even close to the top for DPS and HPS it's just very ahead in regards to popularity. The main reason for that is strong ST damage+MotW+BR, but overall dmg and overall HPS are middle of the pack to lower third. If SP wasn't meta then Priest would most likely be the meta healer. Healer dps/hps are not really the things that decide the meta.
I think Blizz wants you to play a fistweaver build in M+. If you did that, you will brainlessly get procs on the trinket because you do damage to heal
Seriously Holy Paladin, they gotta start pruning all the CDs button bloat and put power back in the actual spec and Holy Word spenders. Also about position, you mentioned Hunters and Warlocks but another huge culprit is Boomkins, as Preservation those are the biggest offenders and a hatred for me to heal.
LMAO what's happening on the background are so hilarious
Ah yeah, the Hpal rework. How they let it to run rampant for almost half a season and then completely slaughtered the spec for two season straight without meaningful changes. Hpal is borderline unplayable, lowest throughput, 30% of dps less than all the other healers; mana issues, button bloat, Holy power system is broken, bad spot healing, ugh :(
Do you actually believe that we had 460 ilvl in Season 1 or did you misspeak?
As disc in stacking haste verse to survive those big burst events. FYI Jak did 500k on crash pack as holy priest
Loved the video and especially love the OZ accent!
monk supports multiple playstyles? the ranged healing style can contribute dps comparable to the melee style? even 80% of what melee can do? 60%? im skeptical. paladins were given a ranged holy power spender in denounce, but they made it PvP only. Righteous Judgement talent could cast consecration at 50% chance whenever Judge is used but then that was nerfed to 30%. personally i don't think devs care about player preferences when it comes to playstyle. they've had their chance to demonstrate a true support of multiple playstyles and i'm not seeing it personally. the skeleton is there but they only give meat to one way that they prefer in their offices at the time, depending on who is currently employed. it doesn't feel like player preferences are taken into consideration unless its the barber shop - maybe im sounding more harsh than i intend to. but it all seems skin deep to me, i'm sad to say.
Another thing that makes learning healing even more difficult now, especially with M+ content, is that watching top players will actually give you the wrong impression of what is required in most of your own gameplay. Unless you're jumping right into a coordinated group of veterans, you aren't going to be able to get away with using most of your globals for damage (and even if you are, it absolutely won't prepare you for how quickly you need to react with the right tools when something does go wrong).
Excellent point. Healing low keys also won't prepare you or teach you how to heal high keys either. Dealing with a lot of failure damage and bosses generally dying quickly which equates to most of them only doing 1 set of mechanics is not teach any healer how to heal high keys were damage becomes more important, failure damage one shots and bosses cycle through multiple sets of CD's.
Very hard to point out the meta. Holy paladin may be suffering more because ret pally is op right now, so it's hard to justify playing holy.
Guess that's why healers aren't used in mdi and high keys right? Top kek
Right now Pres actually feels really good most of the time (at least in coordinated play), and it has been heartening to see players out there succeeding in ~30s with it. However, when the class struggles it realllllly does struggle. The biggest issue is that the trouble spots for Pres often line up 'perfectly' with many of the encounters. This is especially the case with fights that involve a large arena with mechanics that punish stacking. Generally these are all solvable, but it doesn't feel great to force your crew to find new solutions for old problems just to cater to your limitations, especially when you could, say, just play your Resto Druid and have no range issues at all. Speaking of, it also kills me how just a simple Efflorescence gets people to stack far better than any amount of Evoker pleading ever could!
Great post 100% agree. My only issues with Pres atm are positioning ones with pugs and the fact that Pres doesn't handle random or mistake damage well at all. If I'm blanketing Echoes and setting up for the next mechanic with VE and someone takes damage from the fire right before, it's GG and I either have to waste all my Echoes and VE early or let the guy die. It feels like how Disc used to play; very scripted and can't handle random damage well at all but Pres also has range limitations.
I enjoy hpala atm but sure abit bloted witv healing cd and abit weak without. Like the casting buff but would be nice if it had something with melle abilities to buff or change something with cast time to mske it smother. Nice utility and mans sucks tbh.. spender costing mana and Hpower and pretty weal baseline feels bad for sure. Blame it on all the modifier that make it heal like 50k and then 100k with all the the modifiers you stack ontop of it.. 30/60% from dawn and then 20% from being in conc. Trink procs and cooldowns after😅
For holy priests- So many of tools we need are actually already in our toolkit. AoE healing- CoH isn't bad, a buff or more synergy would be nice- but PoH has been a disaster of a spell since Wrath. It's just too weak and holy priests aoe hasn't recovered since they broke it- I was soo good. I agree that we need either a stronger defensive (right now our def is a combination of fade-talented, Desperate prayer, and powerword shield- which is crazy that in the time it takes other healers to find and select one button, I have to select three!! and it's STILL not even half as good) or some built in versatility. Speed is another issue, we are just NOT mobile. Utility- I'm honestly ok with NOT having a BR and an interrupt b/c honestly Holy priest has too many buttons already. IMO it feels better for dps to have interrupt tools b/c they're focus is on the mobs. Changing my focus from players to mobs and tracking what mobs are doing is frankly annoying. I'd honestly like to see them revert the changes to Mass Dispel, it felt so good at the beginning of the xpac. It's just annoying that b/c high end players were using it to negate things at the top of play the changes to deter those action impacts us casual players pretty harshly. Mana- I always come back to mana because, particularly in a m+ environment- either all of the healers need mana or none of them should. The fact that the top S tier healers you mentioned have ZERO mana issues and depending on the key I have to drink every other pull on HP is unconscionable. It's so frustrating and something else that makes healers that rely more heavily on drinking, less desirable in a key b/c the party has to stop and wait for you- or worse they won't stop and then get pissed at you b/c you have no way to recover mana. This is especially annoying when affixes like Spiteful and Bursting prolong your combat status/interrupt drinking. Ok that's my rant- sorry for walls of text!!!
You hit the nail on the head on basically every subject. I completely agree on basically everything. For holy paladin, it’s just got too many gimmicks/mechanics packed into it. Glimmer, beacons, caster/melee, builder/spender are just too many things to tack onto a spec and balance a playstyle around.
please allow me to disagree. from my perspective on the concept of class design, i think it is indeed possible to create many versions of a single theme, even within the same general tree, that allows for 3 or 4 paths through, and provided with teh same 30ish talent points. the choice nodes are a good example of this, allowing a large degree of flexibility. ultimately, i view your statement as something that would obviously be said by someone entirely uncommitted to the premise from the start, so you don't even bother trying to make it work. Death Must Die is releasing a very large update on april 20 or 21, and they are adding talent trees to it, and i believe they released a blog update on steam recently to highlight this possibility in their own version of what a paladin is. but in any case, i think its worth looking to as an example of how people can create a talent system with many options, maybe not to the level WoW can, but for a studio as large and successful as WoW's devs are, we should expect a lot more
Healers shouldnt have dps as a tuning vector. Its stupid and its why healers are done playing.
Maybe Evoker in general needs some utility passive like increased range of effects that trigger on targets within some range.
Yeah. Holy paladin is definitely suffering from an identity crisis. Cooldown based - To properly heal through mechanics, I need stack several CDs for the throughput required. We don’t do much healing outside wings in general. Builder / spender - Wasting precious GCDs to build holy power on laughably weak spenders. Light of dawn is not worth being on action bars right now LOL. What are we? Ranged or melee? If I want to do any meaningful damage, I better be in melee. Holy power generation is also more efficient in melee. HOWEVER, they buff all the CASTER talents. They want me hard casting while in melee range? Does that sound like riveting gameplay? No way! That’s my 2 cents.
I have a shaman and if I toss down healing rain, whip out a totem, and splash in some chain heal I crush dungeons. I get on my Hpal and I have to be member of mensa and manage a ton of spells/CD/utility and I am BARELY scraping by. I have had a holy Pally for almost 20 years and never had another healer. I just recently leveled this shaman and it made me realize how bad Hpals are right now. It's awful. Which sucks because I absolutely love my Hpal.
@@LeoSpaceman2012 I feel you on that man. I picked up resto Druid and I was shocked at how much more capable they are compared to hpal!
I think what Shaman needs is a Spirit Link totem rework. Having to have people physically stand in it isn't working anymore, just make it a buff. They're reworking Death and Decay apparently, they need to do that to all the circular ground spells.
Yea good point. Disc got "modernised" in the sense that Blizz looked at Dome and saw how it promoted degenerate gameplay in raids and was unreliable in pugs and gave Disc Luminous Barrier back as an alternative. But Rsham suffering from the same problem with SL didn't get that treatment.
I went back to my Druid to heal these past couple weeks, my Shaman has higher IO. But the problem with Shaman I found doing high keys is that I can go OOM very easily on it. Also Spirit Link totem is basically unreliable in pugs, I'll be lucky if I can get good consistent use out of it, it's just not a great spell, the radius couldn't be any tinier, they obviously balance the radius of everything against the raid encounters. I also realized that the entire time I was healing keys on my Druid I was ignoring the Bear talents. Those things are busted now that I actually see what's going on. My default build had Cyclone, Mass Roots, Typhoon, basically all the CC instead of the bear stuff and I don't even use the CC unless it's Incorp/Spiteful. The last time I used CC on the base dungeon was in Brackenhide. I used to Cyclone stuff, but that was before they added Grove Guardians, those things are insane, you just heal through everything with them, you don't need CC.
I think an out of combat evocation would be a nice solution
I think Mana Tea on MW is a pretty good style of mana regeneration in general. I think it'd be interesting to see all healers get some kind of mechanic like that, if drinking were to be done away with.
Drinking as my party pulls to get extra mana without having to wait for a timer is super helpful, otherwise I kind of agree
at least bring back the old drink mechanics.
The fact that they nerfed drinking is beyond me! Like wtf blizzard seriously?!?!
Remove almost all pro actice defensive from dps players. I think that would allow them to balance healing to much more.
As a 3900 io healer. There is more to it. The true issue nobody acknowledges is that intellectual capacity has a huge role here. Lower iq and slow reflex, bad decisions(burning cds or overhealing the wrong spikes) dps is minor to healers now its about the timing now. There is a lot of work healers have to do sure but understand the general population iq isn't up to standard. With that being said healing is too hard for the general player in the game and I say this objectively as a top 16 server healer. You all must understand that your success comes from your own effort. Skill diff tldr.
I agree. But you can apply this to tanking as well. The difference in having tank who knows what he is doing is superb. Im not anywhere your io (3k and stopped) but I totally agree. Im trying to learn healing as the last role and its by FAR the most exhausting.
Visions were obnoxious as a healer on launch. As a raid and m+ healer, I didn't even have dps gear, and due to limited retries per week, good dps mains didn't want undergeared offspecs in their party because we had a fair chance of gimping the run. Ended up forming a team with my guild's other healers just so we could get some done, even if we didn't 5 mask them. Absolutely toxic game design that I still haven't forgiven. Never felt less wanted as a healer in WoW. Horrific was the correct descriptor. Healer balance has been a real problem. DF season 1 in particular, maining mistweaver, constantly ranked D-tier, shunned by good pugs because of it, and with the excessively high target of doing +20s just for vault slots... nearly walked away from the game I was so fed up. Everyone just died to oneshots and I could barely cover the rot damage of some fights. That particular character is much, much better in S3 of course, but the overall damage profile in current M+ often leaves me feeling rather powerless. And indeed the default UI is utterly inadequate. There is a lot of work to be done before healing is a role that can be recommended for a first character...
Thank you for making this video
Blizzard probably is to split the healing through the dps and tanks (like the current SOD situation) and avoid fix the issue for the actual healing classes....
You are spot on. I remember healing heroic 25man ICC and we had dedicated tank heals and then allocated groups for raid healers. It made healing fun, you had something specific to do. Now you just spam shit regardless of what is happening
The loud dipshit healers of the community made this happen. They didn't want to contribute anything at all to the group besides JUST HEALING. They absolutely hated that they had to do damage to fill time between healing. So here you go healers, now you get to JUST HEAL all the time. Have fun losers.
The last few expansions have all been the same, it's about one thing and one thing only, burst damage. Receiving or dealing burst damage is the whole crux of the issue. Blizz have made the game about burst windows, silly little do x amount of bonus damage for 5-6 seconds after pressing a button every 20, 30 or 45 seconds. To combat this, every class and spec has a number of damage mitigation abilities to try and keep themselves alive, pvp and pve abilities have overlapped to make this worse and then there are the "talents" that a few classes have such as Nature's Vigil and Vampiric Embrace that exacerbate the issue of healers actually healing. Now healers are not healers, they are support classes. Dispel this, do damage, dispel that, use an external, do damage, dispel some more, use CC and if you're very unlucky.........press a heal spell whilst doing more damage. Some healers and certain classes/specs will be redundant if Blizz do not take a long hard look at the utility others have in comparison.
eh, this really only applies to mythic. if it sucked that much i would be able to get into raids as a 485 healer. go on premade groups at any time of day and see if theres a single raid with less than 3 healers already in.
I forgot about not needing healers in Islands and Visions. I didn't like Visions but I liked Islands. I think what I would do to address this and I've said it before. I would redesign dungeons to have more mobs that do nothing but auto attack but aren't on the threat table, they just randomly go for whoever. Since Legion (and it was worse in Legion) we've had these dungeons where the tank just funnels every single mob in sight on top of him instantly and then starts kiting backwards. They changed it in BFA where if the tank left proximity to things leashed to him, they could lash out at whoever was close to them and kill them, point being they addressed the endless kiting. But what they haven't addressed is how the mobs essentially all just focus fire the tank the entire time, it's boring. I would do away with the affixes and I would just make all the mobs in every dungeon randomly generated with random health pools and the only hint at how much health they have is their physical size without actually targeting them. Do away with tons of lethal mechanics and replace them with physical mobs off of the threat table that have to be dealt with. It's basically taking the concept of Spiteful and Reaping and incorporating it deeply into dungeon design, but the mobs cycle through every member and don't just chase one person. You take the best affixes they ever designed and you deeply incorporate them into dungeon design. I would get rid of the concept of "packs" of mobs in dungeons. Dungeons operate more like Islands in terms of pulls were you just go where ever. After you get enough kill count, the boss should just fly down, teleport into your party, arrive on a meteor, a unicorn, run you all over, etc and just appear where ever the group is. They need to dumb down what the mobs do drastically but take some of them off the threat table and UnMeatShield them. You give healers something to do, you make the dungeon more fun, the damage is more predictable because you can see them physically punching, the damage is less spikey because DPS has more agency over it, it's easier to balance because it's all auto attacks, DPS has to think about what to focus fire more instead of having to have lightning reflexes. All these fancy mobs and spike mechanics are just flat out unnecessary.
Im not sure of the answer, in DF season 1 when healers had to heal because keys had damage, healers complain and stopped playing.
