You could checkout Voiceplay's cover of "Oogie Boogie's Song" It shows off More of Geoffs incredible range (5 octaves, bB0 to bB5) and even the subtitles have to acknowledge how deep geoff goes at the end. At that end he starts pretty high and in seconds goese down to near the lowest end of his range. Also their cover of the Halo theme is utterly amazing. Not just geoffs opening super low note, but the Beatbox skills of Layne to cover the percussion line better than a human should be able to.
Avi is part of the “rhythm section” and does the bass guitar parts. Kevin is the only beatboxer in the group. Kevin and Avi worked VERY well together. Matt took over as the bass when Avi left and he and Kevin also work together just as good as Kevin and Avi did.
Sorry, much too low
Lower registers are always more difficult to understand, especially if you don't already know the song. Geoff's wife has degenerative hearing loss, so he's very aware of providing good captions for all his videos.
🇱🇻👋🔥🔥SUPER DREAM!🔥🔥🙏🇰🇿
Thanks for your reaction 👍🏻 I love to see people seeing Geoff or VoicePlay for the first time 😂🎉 Hoping for more Geoff or VoicePlay to come 🙏🏼
The lyrics of this song are written in a dated literary register of the English language, that is not typical for most other songs, especially modern ones. It's sort of halfway between Shakespeare, and a nineteenth-century hymn, except without the archaic inflections. The word order, grammar, and some of the word choice, are markedly different from contemporary English. It's got the vocative interjection, conditionals without the word "if", entire clauses in apposition, nouns used adverbially, nominative absolute constructions, literary vocabulary, archaic vocabulary, phrasal verbs used in ways that are no longer standard, and lots of flowery, indirect metaphors. It is, of course, done this way for good reasons, related to the setting of the story; nonetheless, you need more than a passing familiarity with the history of the English language if you want to catch what it's saying by just listening, regardless of who is singing it. Geoff's voice is not the problem here. The song just requires a higher degree of understanding of the English language, than you're used to in other songs.
You can checkout bass singer called Tomi P, he can sing as high as Dimash and as low as Geoff. Try Hellfire or No time to die ❤
He has closed captions you can turn on if you have trouble with hearing/understanding. Some people have difficulty discerning stuff in the deeper ranges, and it sometimes stems from listening to super loud concerts, etc. The tiny hair cells within the inner ear, specifically the cochlea, become damaged or die, preventing them from effectively converting sound waves into electrical signals that are then sent to the brain as sound, so discerning the words on deep notes might indicate an issue with this. Geoff's wife Kathy has profound hearing loss, and they actually did a video about it. Anyway, thanks for a great reaction, and I look forward to many more!
Geoff is likely very concious of proper subtitles considering his wife has significant hearing loss of a type known as "cookie bite" meaning she's all but deaf in the middle of her hearing range and can hear some of the lowest and highest ranges. She also has an issue where one ear hears a note the right tone, but the other ear likes to make it up as it goes along. EG she can hear a c1 in one ear and it's a g1 in the other for example.
You did better than me - I burst into tears when I first heard this piece. And all their songs are as good. Try "Bohemian Rhapsody".
I remember recommending this to you, and now I´ve almost missed it! Thanks for doing this, and glad you actually enjoyed this!
This is a beautiful song, and a very honest reaction. I thought you would like Geoff, he is amazing! Thanks a lot, and enjoy your journey! Ah, concerning the versions here and from Ed Shearan: It has been said Ed sings a bards lament for a city burned down by a dragon, while Geoff sings the warriors version full of resolve who knows full well what might happen once he sets foot in the city besieged by a firebreathing dragon and still intends to go...
Oh you so have to react to Voiceplay! They are independent and reactor friendly. They are all incredible. Beautiful song - he did a great job! 🌹🕊
Thanks for the reaction! For the group he is in, I recommend Nothing Else Matters or for more theatrical videos they've done you could look at the video game/viking themes. VoicePlay does a huge variety.
Americans are notoriously hard to identify from the name alone, but in this case it kind of makes sense. Geoff's surname was almost certainly of Italian origin at some point back his family tree, but as far as I know he hasn't published his genealogy, so there's no telling how many generations back that was. The given name, Geoff, from Geoffrey, is of Germanic origin, with Old French influence. Where are there a lot of people with Italian, Germanic, and French cultural backgrounds, living in the same place? North America should immediately spring to mind. It's not the only possibility, but it's the most obvious one, and in this case, correct: Geoff is from Orlando.
You will absolutely love Song of Durin as well. Same 4 dwarves but he adds another. In this video left to right.... Fili... Bofur.... Kili and Thorin. In Song of Durin he adds Gimli. They are in the Tomb of Balin, who is Gimli's cousin that died in The Hobbit 3 movie. Gimli is the only dwarf in Lord of The Rings but not in The Hobbit.
Well, your channel has gaming in the title…so you can do things to tickle the gamers and the people looking for music reactions both. Geoff did a solo version of Unbroken from Red Dead Redemption 2. The group he sings with, VoicePlay has covered: Dragonborn from Skyrim Valhalla Calling from Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla Sleeping in the Cold Below from Warframe Party Of Your Lifetime from Warframe:1999 (they offer a code at the end of the video for an in-game freebie) Halo theme Enemy from League of Legends There are a few others, but those are my faves.
Thanks for this reaction to Geoff's solo music! I love "Song of Durin" too (from Tolkien's books rather than the movies). Check out VoicePlay's Viking tunes ("My Mother Told Me" followed by "Valhalla Calling"). Layne (beatboxer and arranger of that one) makes Geoff go crazy low in Valhalla because Geoff doesn't do that to himself! VoicePlay's tenor, Eliezer ("Eli") Jacobson does most of Geoff's lighting for him. On Geoff's lowest notes, the frequency is so low, some headphones don't handle them well. Geoff has a 5 octave vocal range that he's willing to record (3 octaves in full chest voice). His voice continues to get lower as he ages. I would recommend using the subtitles; Geoff usually does them himself. VoicePlay is generally considered one of the three top tier contemporary acapella groups. They formed in 1997 (under another name) and toured and performed live for many, many years until the pandemic shutdown when they turned to UA-cam and, as husbands and fathers, enjoy staying at home. When folks speak of the top contemporary bass singers, they usually mention Avi Kaplan (formerly of Pentatonix and now indie), Tim Foust of HomeFree, and Geoff Castellucci of VoicePlay. Geoff didn't start solo music uploads until the pandemic when they quit touring and he had more time. VoicePlay and Geoff are lesser known only because they have always walked away from talks with labels to maintain their own creative control. They were under consideration for 2025 Grammy nominations (submitted by others) for "Hellfire" in one category and "The Way You Make Me Feel" in two categories but sadly did not receive any nominations...apparently really hard for that to happen for 100% indie artists.
In order of their solos, I call the 4 characters "dark bass" Geoff, "normal" bass Geoff, baritone Geoff, and tenor Geoff. With how low dark bass Geoff starts off the song, tenor Geoff always surprises people who haven't heard him get up that high before!
You can always turn on the captions, clarity is wonderful. Geoff's range is 5 octaves (Dimash is higher). He didn't start the solos until Covid came along and VoicePlay was no longer touring but kicked their videos into high gear. They really are the best out there now. They don't have the support of a label, contracts, etc. because they would rather have the ability to decide themselves what they want to do next, not to mention they get to do all the creativity. A few years ago, Tony Wakim (baritone for VP) wanted to get into productions so Layne (beatboxer for VP) went in as co-owner with Tony (who does most of the management). Most of VoicePlay and Geoff's videos are done there.
Song of Duran is the 3rd in the Tolkien songs.
You should definitely check out VoicePlay because you get Geoff but you also get 4 more amazing singers to enjoy! ❤
Check out Voice Play's cover of Dream On!! Also Home Free's cover of End of the Road!! ❤🎉
Geoff "The Dragon" is crazy low, but sets it all up with his incredible range. I See Fire and Song of Durin will show you his true range. Excited for these videos and any video from Voiceplay. Welcome to the world of Geoff.
Thanks for your reaction! This song is my favorite of Geoff's Hobbit trilogy (like it better than "Song Of Durin"). I am looking forward to your reactions to Voice Play as well. I am not sure what gaming you like but Voice Play has a lot of gaming covers: "My Mother Told Me" and "Valhalla Calling" from Assassin's Creed, "Dragonborn Comes" from Skyrim, "Sleeping In The Cold Below" and "Party Of Your Life Time" from Warframe to name just a few. You may just want to go to Voice Play's play list and pick a song you know well that they cover.
I don't have problems understanding what he sings, but I can understand the issue. 🙂 One detail about the rhythmic section: what sounds like a snare drum played with brushes is actually a shovel into gravel and sand, depending on the specific sound he wants to produce in that specific moment. 🙂 A little bit of context: the song is about the Dwarves awaiting for Smaug the Dragon to arrive upon them (and the small town nearby) with all his rage. The fire the song speaks of is Smaug's fire, and he's totally enraged because the Dwarves (well... Bilbo Baggins) stole some of his treasury, and you don't do such thing to a Dragon without consequences 😅. So they're actually on the eve of a battle that will almost certainly cost them their lives, but they gather strength and courage by sharing these moments together, in the deep bond they have. I confess I can't listen to the song without getting emotional. 🙂 It's something that speaks of "male friendship", and of facing death with an attitude, towards something you deem "right". See you next time!|
I think it adds to the emotional impact of the song when we think about the fact that only one of these four characters portrayed survive the coming battle. The characters from The Hobbit here are Thorin, Fili, Kili, and Bofur.
you really need good bass headphones to hear the lowest notes that he sings. I would also suggest turning on the subtitles as this may help with your understanding of the lyrics
It wasn't the notes that i had troubles hearing...was just some of the words, that i couldn't inderstand 😁
Yes. Geoff, Voice Play and Voice Play's featured guest are very sensitive to the needs of fans that struggle with hearing as they have family members that are deaf or hearing impaired. Their close captions are very helpful, fun and often funny with unexpected surprises put in to enhance the enjoyment for their hearing impaired fans. Also, a good set of headphones usually help with hearing some of the very low bass tones.
Hello and welcome! You'll find a lot of Voiceplay fans dropping by your videos now (that's Geoff's group, he does acapella with them and stuff with instruments on his own channel). Personally, I recommend Sound of Silence and, if you like the fantasy aesthetic, The Dragonborn Comes from Skyrim, as performed by Voiceplay. Have fun!
Welcome to the wonderful world of Geoff Castellucci. He is amazing and has a 5-octive range. He is the bass singer for VoicePlay (an acapella group). VoicePlay & Geoff are from Orlando, Florida. I have subscribed to see more Geoff & hopefully VoicePlay reactions. "I See Fire" is the second song he did in the LOTR/Hobbit trilogy, followed by "The Song of Durin". A few of my favorites by him are "Jack's Lament", "Unshaken" & "Ain't No Sunshine". VoicePlay is known as the 'theater kids' of acapella. They have an extensive library and no matter what you choose, you won't go wrong. I would recommend: "Hoist the Colors", "Valhalla Calling" (my fav), "Thriller", "Be Prepared", "The Dragonborn Comes", "Nothing Else Matters", "Dream On", "Seven Nation Army", "Creep". There are just too many to list. Enjoy the rabbit hole.
From your encouragement to find new (or unknown older) artists: The Beatles song "Help!" was not done the way they wanted to do it, rather they played it upbeat when they released it, while they wanted to play it slower like a ballad that suited the lyrics. One Australian singer who arranged it and then sang Help! that preferred way is John Farnham, and reactions must always be to his live concert versions of his songs, as he thrives with an audience.
He does have the ability to go even deeper than he did in this. His lowest that I know of, so far, is a B0. He may be of Italian decent but, he was born and raised in the USA, currently living in Florida.
As others have pointed out Geoff is part of the 3rd big acapella group "Voiceplay". They are fully independent, has the widest genre range and the most theatrical of all the acapella groups (probably the oldest too!). They are extraordinary and Geoff is their bass - they are based in Orlando, Florida, but he has Italian roots from somewhere!! Yes, Geoff do all the voices here. He is an extraordinary arranger too! 🌹🕊
Tomi P - No time to die, Hellfire! ❤ He's is a bass, you will love it!
Geoff started doing solo work when Covid shut the world down and Voiceplay could not tour. As you check the credits, you will see that almost everything is done by him. Arrangement, production, and edit. He sometimes has help with makeup, as he did here, and camera if he needs a steadicam. But usually, it's just him and his wife Kathy on the day of the video shoot. He and Voiceplay are completely independent, no agent, no manager. Because of this they have complete artistic control, but are less well known than other groups. They are supported almost exclusively by a very ardent fan base on Patreon. I See Fire is from the second Hobbit movie, but was only sung over the credits at the end of the movie. It is my favorite because of the emotional response I had to it. Voiceplay can also be very theatrical. They did two Michael Jackson songs last year, Thriller and The Way You Make Me Feel. You will love them both, I promise. Subscribed in anticipation!!
Since you’re a gamer, please be aware that VoicePlay, the group Geoff is in, has done several songs from video games. These include: Dragonborn (Skyrim) Halo Theme Valhalla Calling (Assassin’s Creed:Valhalla) Sleeping in the Cold Below (Warframe) Party of Your Lifetime (Warframe:1999 - and if you play the vid after the song finishes, you’ll get a code for a free in-game goodie)
Geoff has some from video games on his solo channel too (at least one for sure)
@ Unshaken from RDR 2. I had forgotten about that being from a game. Thank you!
This was also my introduction to Geoff. Since then i'm down in this rabbithole and the rabbithole of Voiceplay. The others have already mentioned everything you need to know so just have fun on your journey with Geoff and Voiceplay. You will find the community always willing to help and explain.
Geoff has a ton of amazing videos on his channel. Yes. He uses instruments and sound effects using the Native Instruments plugin. Yes. They are all Geoff. He has an amazing range from bass to tenor. Each of his clones have their own name and range, Jeff, Jeoph, Goff and Daryl. Unshaken is the 4 ghost cowboys (his clones) from his video Ghost Riders In The Sky.. My other favorites are.... "Rains of Castemere ", "Carol of The Bells", "Jack's Lament". Ain't No Sunshine is the video that introduced me to Geoff 3 years ago in April. Geoff is also the bass singer for the acapella group Voiceplay. These 4 guys are absolutely fantastic. They collaborate with various artists for the 5th spot. I recommend..... Classical Chaos, Dragonborn Comes Skyrim, Hide and Seek. Sleeping In The Cold Below, Party Of Your Lifetime. But love all their videos. They also have tons to choose from. Welcome to the Geoff Castellucci rabbit hole 🐰 And hopefully Voiceplay as well. Subscribed for more.
Geoff doesn't have a bad song -- anything that appeals to you on his channel will be great. Most of his songs feature at least some of his wonderful low notes, but his baritone range is lovely as well. Thanks for reacting!
All 3 low notes were a G1 but sang in different techniques. Pretty cool, huh? His version of Song of Durin is also amazing.
Check out Geoff’s acapella group VoicePlay! 😊
Thank you for the reaction! I'm sure you'll enjoy "I See Fire" and "Song of Durin" just as much, they're very beautiful and a real treat for LOTR / Hobbit fans. Geoff Castellucci has covered a wide variety of songs, from old classics to Game of Thrones, often with great costumes like in this video. Just pick whatever you're interested in! If you want to see how his unique voice fits in with four other extremely talented gentlemen in an a-capella group, check out VoicePlay. They really live up to their name, full of creativity and daring they take on everything from Vikings to Zombies acting and costuming-wise, from video game inspired songs to rock classics. Some songs hit you right in the heart, others will make you laugh out loud or so energetic you want to dance or work out. 😄Most of us are fans of Geoff Castellucci as well as VoicePlay and will be sure to watch any reaction videos you do for either!
You are in a position to know for sure, but most reactors find it unnecessary to mask the videos for Geoff and VoicePlay. They don’t mind reactors using their videos and will usually release any blocks that UA-cam puts on. That being said, I know there are exceptions such as recording during a livestream (which UA-cam will always block if not masked. ) I will say that your mask for this one was not unpleasant to watch, but for some videos masks can be annoying to viewers. I’ve subscribed in hopes of more Geoff reactions and look forward to seeing you experience VoicePlay. Since you like gaming, I would suggest Dragonborn Comes Skyrim, although I think one of their best is Nothing Else Matters.
Geoff does everything in his videos except complicated lighting, and makeup. He has a five octave range and can slip into subharmonics to make his voice go deeper. He does all the instruments with plug ins through his keyboards. I hope you do a lot more of Geoff's videos and also VoicePlay. He arranges almost half the music they sing 😅 Geoff is an American of Italian descent and he lives in Florida with his wife and son.😊
Oh, and watching Geoff and VoicePlay will absolutely increase your subscriber count. It's not the norm, but I have see reactor's subscriber amount go from two digits to four digits in just over a week! And watching Home Free is a good way too!
Hi! Awesome reaction! Oh boy, are you going on a fun ride, and I'm subscribing to watch it! Allons-y! Beware of "Spoilers, Sweetie" (that's a Doctor Who thing) in the comments for future videos by Geoff!😀 Just a tip, from a devoted VoicePlaya/Castellunatic, "Rule One" (a suggestion, really) of VoicePlay and Geoff videos, _always_ watch the video all the way to the end. Often there's extras in the outro, and even if there isn't, you get to hear the music longer!😊 (If you decide to watch VoicePlay too, I've put together a list of suggestions for optimal viewing of them, and Geoff's solo work, and some info on the group. I'll be happy to pass them on on your first VP video, if you wish.) I'm definitely impressed with your spotting that all the dwarves are Geoff! His voice breaks reactors😅 and confuses and delights many😊! He's one of a kind. Don't miss I See Fire or Song of Durin! They're excellent! Also, I suggest a bit of holiday nostalgia and watching Geoff's Christmas video from December, "Carol Of The Bells!" Your jaw will drop! It has well over a million views already!😄 Also, Geoff's group, VoicePlay, will knock your socks off! If you want to hear how low Geoff can go, start with VoicePlay's Valhalla Calling! That's not really a spoiler, because I'm not saying how low he does go, just that he goes low. Whoa, did I just channel Dr. Seuss?😂 Oh, and from one LOTR fan to another, I suggest you check out The Hillywood Show's "Lord Of The Rings Parody." It is truly EPIC! Sean Astin (Samwise Gamgee) himself tweeted how much he liked it! Hillywood's "The Hobbit Parody" is a hoot too. They're older videos, but they stand the test of time, and considering they're all fan funded, are amazing. Hillywood has a parody to suit everyone's taste. I don't know their copyright rules, so you may not be able to react to them, but I think you'd enjoy just watching them on your own! Looking forward to future Geoff and possibly VoicePlay vids! "Geronimo!"
Great reaction, thank you! For a very different song, different presentation, listen to Ain't No Sunshine. Drop dead gorgeous, and great HIGHS as well as LOWS. In you're a gamer, Geoff has a bunch of covers of gaming songs, as does VoicePlay. (Plus Disney, old-time ballads, Broadway, you name it!)
Welcome to the rabbit hole❤ we’re all mad here 🤪 ❤
Yes we are😄🥰
And one thing more - since you asked. Yes his family’s background is Italian-American. He (and the acapella group he also sings with - VoicePlay) are located in Orlando, Florida in the USA.
I’m subscribing to hopefully follow your journey down the Castellucci rabbit hole (and VoicePlay too, please!) With your ‘name’ being about gaming I’m going to tell you that VoicePlay has several video game related songs. Visually similar to this one is “Dragonborn Comes” from Skyrim. It is gorgeous to hear and view. I suggest you might want to start there for their channel. However, VoicePlay is really pretty great at many different genres. I’m especially fond of their many rock oriented songs.
“I See Fire” was in the 2nd Hobbit movie - but over the movie credits, not during the movie. That might be why it didn’t seem familiar. For Geoff’s cover of it, he brings back these 4 ‘dwarves’ but the other 3 get real ‘solo’ lines in differing ranges. In “Song of Durin” he adds Gimli to start it off, who is then joined by the ‘ghosts’ of these 4. I think you will greatly enjoy both songs!
Oi! Spoilers!
