Apart from Grieg's work, which is of course an immense source of Norwegian folk music, there are many other beautiful pieces of music, but I'm not sure they are likely to be easily worked on in the way that you do. Instrumental songs, like Espelandsrilen, which always reminds me a bit of Irish folk music; or waltzes like the Fingjenta or the Slåpen, just to name a few examples of well-known melodies that I also enjoy. Or even some patriotic songs, such as På Dovrefjell, which is one of my favorites of the genre. Being myself just someone who loves music, but without specific musical training, as is your case, I don't have much confidence to suggest something you can work on. Even so, I have given the matter some thought and will finally make the following suggestions: (1) Heming og Gygra (Heming and Gygra). It is a well-known medieval ballad, energetic and full of imagination. It tells the story of a young man (Heming) who, lost in the mountains by nightfall, takes shelter in a cave inhabited by a female troll (Gygra). He discovers that Gygra holds a maiden imprisoned in one of the compartments of the cave and eventually manages to free her and escape with her. (2) Min gut (My son) by Bukkene Bruse. A very beautiful song, in a softer tone, in which a father conveys his wishes for his son's life. Regardless of whether or not you'll want to make your own interpretation of these themes, I am at least confident that you will enjoy knowing them. Finland?
