Thanks for the kind comments and yes I try to take care of it as it has taken care of me for over 30 years. At 77yrs I needed those updates to be able to continue putting up my own wood and helping others.

You are correct, I am over 6 ft and should have raised it before I made all the other improvements. Actually it is very comfortable to run as is as is and sometimes I sit on a high stool ie semi standing if I’m going to be at it a long time. Even though low, it’s really saved out my old back. Thanks for the comments and explaining your situation. My wife has a cousin in Cromberg so we go along the east shore of Almanor every fall on the way over to visit. Sounds like you had quite a bit more snow than us and I think your “expensive toy” is essential with that amount of snow. It was sad and shocking to see the devastation from the Dixie fire and others in the region as we made our way over to the Graeagle area. Hopefully the worst of the snow is over for this year and we can look forward to full lakes and reservoirs for a change.

Thank you for your kind comments. Our weather has changed here also with not as many heavy snow winters so this one was a pleasant surprise!

No just an old retired Caterpillar mechanic, but that said, in the field many times when no parts were available we had to come up with solutions to get the equipment up and running. No the taller wedge is something I built and installed 30 years ago due to the large rounds that I often deal with. As far as the four way wedge, I’ve thought many times that I would build one, but my old machine is only a 28 ton and with the knots in most of the wood I split I actually think that many times it would slow me down. At any rate, thanks for your kind comments!

You are correct and actually the deep driveway snow was a few years ago, just using up some footage the majority of which was 22. We are fortunate to live in such a beautiful area and I like to share it with those not so lucky. Thanks for viewing and your comment on the axes as that is one of my hobbies to restore old edge tools of all types. I checked your channel out and liked what I saw in fact think I’ve been to most of those lakes…hope your back up and running soon from your surgery 👍

I will Roger, but it’ll probably after winter as we are in the snow season here. It’s basically .325” 3x4” angle iron fit up to my wedge and the top strap is welded to the angle iron but not the wedge. Drilled and tapped the top of the wedge and the bolt is just there to hold it down. Not seen in the video are two short pieces of .325” round stock welded to the i-beam on the back side of the angle iron so the force of splitting the wood can’t push the angle iron back at the bottom and spread it (if that makes any sense?) Allan, thanks for the comment and I considered a spring as you said because I was also concerned about a pile up and damage. That said, on the first trial run I noticed that I could manually retract the cylinder albeit slowly due to the way I welded the washer to the end of the tube (not intensional just dumb luck) it has a profile sort of like an acorn nut ie very little surface contact so the lever can be pulled back and with the slack in the pins and link allows for enough movement to slowly retract the cylinder for those situations where a rogue long cut shows up. Also the hose clamp used for adjustment is tightened only enough to trip the valve spool and if held on purpose, the tube will slip though the grip and be pushed back into the outer tube without damage. Yes you are right about the splitter being a bit too low as many others have mentioned and I’m over 6’ so that adds to the problem. When I started this mod over six years ago, I was focused on a lift aid to keep from grunting those heavy rounds up onto the splitter. It was a prototype in the beginning, but after building and installing all of the components, it became obvious that virtually every component would have to be changed to accomplish that. In reality, it’s really not painful to use and I do have a bad lower back. While splitting, I always have three points of support going on ie both legs and one arm. In the beginning, it would have been very easy to raise the i beam, but at this point not so much. Thanks for viewing and your comments!

I hear you. It's not the lifting. It's the stooped bent over position to split without straightening up that hurts the back. I have a little 4 ton electric that usually sits on the ground. Now sits on a rolling table built up off a four foot long 6 wheel dolly (pulls across uneven ground easily), so that my back doesn't have to bend to put the log on, or to operate the controls. I made it wide enough to hold the split wood from falling.

Yes you are correct and I think I’ve got things pretty much sorted out. I’ve since made two more upgrades, an adjustable return stop that is adjustable to whatever length of rounds I’m splitting (saves a lot of time). Then I fabricated a removable attachment for the wedge for wet fibrous wood to aid in spreading it apart quicker. I made a short vid on those. Made a better larger out-feed table and a simpler way to hold the lift ladder up. On the wedge vs power ratio, I built the wedge years ago with that in mind since the splitter is only 28 tons and you can see it’s not a blunt ¥ but a lesser degree angle> so on the tough stuff it literally cuts through the wood and the easy stuff pops like you’d expect. And the lift ladder ended up that way because that’s what I had on hand at the time. I will say that I would build it that way on purpose again since it helps keep the big half splits on the ladder and not rolling into the work area. Thanks again for the comment!
