St. Ann’s and St. George’s were my shopping spots back in the day, especially when I wanted to catch the latest flick at what used to be Warner Village Cinemas. And you know what else used to be there? The Edge

I can remember living in Ilford Essex where as a teenager my best friend Syed and I used to go scrumping , shoplifting bars of chocolate from department stores like Bodgers , sometimes getting into scuffles with other kids. No knifes were never used , in fact knife crime was unheard of and deaths by shootings never happened . The antisocial behavior and aggression was of a completely different type to what is now . Even punch ups after closing time outside Ilford palais no one ever died. Ilford was back then prominently white English but had a handful of Jewish people a few Hindus , Sikhs and a few Muslims . The once pretty much mono cultural English town had kept its own identity for over 100 years until the late 1900s. I can clearly remember shopping with my Nan to go into Wool shops, Bakers, Fishmongers and Butchers shops were she would buy a pigs head to turn it into a revolting meat you would put into a sandwich called Braun. Ilford in 2022 has changed behold recognition, Ilford palais , all of the shops I once knew including Bodgers and West department stores have gone , the English culture has gone , the feeling of walking round the town after dark with a feeling of being safe has also gone. If it wasn't for the red buses and British number plates one could quite easily be mistaken for this video to be shot in one of the many towns on the Indian Continent.

I was born here and it looks v different. On the left hand side of street was a Greek kebab shop, sweet shops, a Sainsbury, wimpy but no other takeaways. Then Dale's paper shop and a v nice seafood barrow, things change, we used to walk, and once a year go to The Fun fair, I'll leave it to others whether it's an improvement.
