If I were getting into it now, I'd get Solid Edge mostly because its more stable. Machine design is the biggest market, but it also has the most players.

Massive thanks for making this series. I'm currently in my first design role after uni having only ever used SW and I've gone from loving it to being frustrated by it. I spend a lot of time editing 20 year old sheet metal parts with huge nonsensical feature trees so synchronous modelling has blown my mind. I'm really impressed by SE in general.

I have 8 years of experience with CATIA, 4 years with SolidWorks, some episodes with Inventor and Fusion360 and have been using Solid Edge for the past 1.5 years. Based on my experience, I would not recommend purchasing Solid Edge. The software has numerous bugs, an unclear workflow, inconsistent UI (f.e GoTo is under right click when going "down" or an icon when going "up" - why it is not just a line to move? less clicks) and the Synchronous mode becomes impractical for anything more complex than a simple box. One of the most frustrating issues is when modifications to features lower in the ordered tree unexpectedly affect features at the top. Additionally, some updates have introduced new problems, only to fix them in subsequent releases. However, there are positive aspects, for example, how well Solid Edge handles fasteners, which is a feature I find lacking in other CAD programs.

    • @kgrundey

I have the opposite view... I feel Solid Edge is more stable on equivalent hardware, performs better, and has less bugs than competing products. Siemens support is also super responsive in diagnosing and fixing any issues reported if they do happen to occur, more so than any other vendor I've had experience with. Synchronous does require a bit of learning because the common misconception is that it is much simpler than Ordered modeling to use, but it has its own toolsets and workflows that must be well understood to use it effectively. For those users like yourself who have a strong experience with Ordered tools, there is quite a bit of "unlearning" needed too as the tendency is to apply the old "ordered" mindset to Synchronous which no longer applies there. The net result is it doesn't work well. Users who get through the unlearning/learning process tend to love it and not look back to the ordered method. There are some types of features that are limited in Synchronous such as non-primitive surfaces as they are not editable after creation and some workflows are just easier if downstream treatment features are done in Ordered such as not-architectural rounds on a molded part, but for those situations you can use a hybrid model where Ordered and Synchronous features are mixed. For imported models, Synchronous is a "no brainer" as there is nothing that allows editing as easily or robustly as it does. UI wise, I'll give you the inconsistencies you mentioned as it is well known that starting in Solid Edge 2023, they started a massive makeover of the UI to meet a number of target goals with the idea it would take more than a couple releases to migrate everything to the new format. Since this makeover is still "in process", that leaves some inconsistencies in the interim releases. I would encourage you to check out Solid Edge 2025 being released next month as I'm sure you will see a more consistent and cohesive UI along with many other enhancements.

@@kgrundey I have 6 tickets opened at Siemens, some of them opened for 1 year+, but nothing is happening with them :) In our company, we decided that Synchronous for regular design is forbidden. We only use it to edit STEP files from external sources as you mentioned. To be honest, even our Solid Edge vendor said that Synchronous is for very simple parts. On my Lenovo workstation, I experience crashes 3 to 4 times per week, whereas when I was using SolidWorks, I only had crashes 2 to 3 times a year. You encourage me to wait for a 2025 version. I started with the 2023 version in my current company, so from my perspective, I have to wait 2 years for the software to be usable.

Building the individual parts was easy. Making the assembly mates was the hard part. The cam mates especially for the valve lifters kept flipping. The model was made probably 20 years ago. I would hope thar SW has addressed some of the problems by now, but I guess it wouldn't surprise me if the same bugs are in the software today.

This drives me fucking nuts. 10 years later and this is still a problem. Furthermore, even if you sketch a spline, use it to sweep a surface, then try to go CC to that surface you'll get an error if the spline is only a degree 2. Convert the edge of the surface and it converts as a conic.
