Oakley MOD3 vs. MOD5 Helmet Review
I review two of Oakley's newest 2023-2024 snow helmets: the MOD3 - MIPS and the MOD5 - MIPS. Wondering which one to get? How will it fit? What's it weigh? Is the cost worth it?
I share my thoughts and ultimate choice.

I Deploy My Avalanche Airbag... with skis on the back! (Gear test #1: BCA Float 2.0 )
Переглядів 2413 роки тому
Curious to see what would happen if you deployed your avy airbag while hiking/riding a sled with ski's lashed on the pack? Well inquisitive minds, wait no more. This was a side quest that I'd been wondering about for a year or so. One unseasonably warm fall day waiting and #prayingforsnow, I finally got impatient. Loaded my summer-long-neglected skis and pack into the truck and, after a hike in...
Episode 1: Overlanding in Gold Butte National Monument

I meet a group of 4-wheel & overland enthusiasts from Overlandbound.com at "Whitney Pocket", the entry point to Gold Butte National Monument. We travel to a site called "Little Finland" to camp, do some exploring the next morning, and then continue on to the Gold Butte townsite. About a 45 mile roundtrip loop. Mellow off-roading. Epic scenery. Great word about streams in the desert and water in...

Hi, I was wondering how tall are you and how does the Beast 98 feels?

    • @backcountryword1025

Hey Pierre, sorry for the long delay. I'm 178 cm tall (or 5' 10" for us crazy Americans). The 98's with flat bindings are SUPER light-weight, and perform wonderfully uphill. You can tour all day on them. Downhill they are great in light powder (up to about 20 cm), pretty good in moderate crud, and just fine in most hard-pack short except icy-steep (not stiff enough for that). They start to chatter on hard or groomed snow much above 20 mph/30 kph, but if you're skiing backcountry, it's usually not a problem (I just notice it on if I'm doing some lift-access side-country at the resort, and skiing back to the car). The only thing I don't like them in is deep & heavy powder (e.g., PNW, Cascades spring snow). But I should have taken my fat skis anyways for that!
