The next weekend after shooting the 6 pointer, we went back to the same area, and only 250m further along the track we got onto a couple of deer, see how it plays out.

Even after a 2 month lay off from hunting, Meg still pin points a stag for me with ease. I manage to make a good clean shot with the Lehigh subsonics, and the stag goes down within 50m

What's your dog breed?
Nice work Lawerence! Meg was certainly onto them! Great stuff! 👍👍👍
Choice vid bro. Love fishing for Kings in my little sea nymph up here in Doubtless bay. Subscribed! 💪
Cheers man, appreciate the comment and subscribing 👍 so good aye, kings are great fighters. How is the fishing there?
@@deertrackernz2203 yeah not too bad the last couple of trips. Got a few smaller kings in Whangaroa last trip but the sharks turned up. Last week I got 4 snaps and a handful of kahis and Trev's for the smoker. Been a bit slow with those southerly winds. Still getting a few in the bin though. 🤙
@@joshwyatt9231 nice, fishing is fishing and not catching aye😂 just being out there and getting enough for a feed is cool.
And the sharks a pain, went out yesterday and one kingi came up with a big mouthful taken out of it. Usually lose the whole fish or just get the head.
Awesome looking boat DIY from a shed! should do a break down video how much it costed.
Thanks mate, yea I’ll look into that, with the next boat I might film the whole process of the build👍
Nice work Lawrence! Cool you both got a deer! 👍👍👍
Cheers Darrell, yea was a good result for sure.
Wicked bro!!
Cheers Jordan 👍
Far out that dogs fidgety. Gets the job done though which shows it’s all about the way the two of you operate together. Keep the vids coming please.
Haha yes she can be, I think sometimes it’s because of me and my body language. Yea we spooked 3 yesterday, totally nothing to do with her, she was actually really good on a wind and took me to 6m from a spiker laying down, just wrong position to be in on approach, but that’s hunting👍. Thanks for commenting, I might actually put the footage up of that stalk.
Interesting watch , for me as a pig hunter. One of my dogs is a little keen on deer, but I don’t mind a bit of accidental veni. The times when there’s few pigs and more deer, I’ve taught both my dogs to stay at my side. So that I can read them before they push a deer. I whistle tui and bell bird calls to heel them in ( with a bit of training prior obviously). I avoid human voice commands and deer seem to treat bird sounds as white noise, around my spots. Also I had the benefit of observing the language between the mother of my pups, and often emulating that helps with quiet recall, that won’t alert a deer. Great vid, keep it up.
That’s cool, best of both worlds. Yea I use whistle for turn/come command, and hiss/sssssttt for or palm out hand signal for sit. I’ve put a few shots over Meg with suppressed high velocity rounds before i found the Lehigh subsonics, and I think it’s effected her hearing a bit already. I’m surprised I don’t see bugger all pigs or pig sign while stalking.
Thanks for posting. It gives me some reassurance to see that you are having to correct your dog as much as you do on this video.
Yea man she can be hard to handle most days, but we always get results. Stick with it, you need to work as a team, but you are team leader👍
Work Lawrence. Well done on not shooting the second one and upstaging Sensei Michaels. Watching you push with the pup on indicate reminds me to stop and be still, dead still when mine does. It works!!!
Thanks, enjoyed that vid, awesome bush, great seeing meg do her thing,Cheers.
Thanks Mike, glad you enjoyed it. Yea she is a machine at finding deer, just a bit of a handful when really close.
Nar duno about those bullets,I've got a 300 blackout and using those leehigh bullets, just not good enough, will stick to my bow ,or my 2506.but thanks for vid
Might just be your shot placement, every animal I’ve hit in the shoulder has died faster than most high velocity kill shots🤷♂️ yea I’ve lost some that I didn’t hit right, but I’ve lost deer hit with hi velocity as well. And I know people that hunt with bows and they wound heaps😂 I use the subs to protect Megs hearing and mine. Each to their own, it all comes down to shot placement at the end of the day no matter what you use. Happy hunting👌
Good vid as always, you must be getting low on those Lehigh sub loads. Have you come up with a replacement load yet.
Cheers mate, yea I have about 60 rounds left, they are still making them, they are just slightly different design, made out of brass now and a bit heavier and more expensive 😂
Was a good mission. Have to do another one.
Yea bro for sure, I might be going back there on Sunday.
Hey man, great videos. What breed is Meg?
Cheers mate, she is a bit of a mix, dad is black lab and mum is a pig dog, (kelpy, ridgeback, bull cattle, and probably a few more breeds) she’s not perfect but she is pretty bloody good👌
That dog you have is one of the best mate, you could have bro.
Yea bro she is bloody good👌
Hey Lawrence. Just a stupid question probably. But, I'm picking you tend to film where you can actually hunt, as opposed to bush bash and spook. Is it fairly open down your ways compared to the supplejack haven of the Kaimais?
Hey mate, yea I just hunt places I know are reasonably open, obviously going to a new spot you just never know till your in there. I hate supplejack, so I definitely don’t bother going anywhere near kaimais😂 I go Manaku’s on occasion because my brother n law lives there, but mainly hunt the clearings.
@deertrackernz2203 yeah all good. There are huntable threads in the Kaimais but nothing as open as the Kai.anawas!
@@snoop2477 haha yea Kaimanawas is good from what I’ve seen.
Great public land hunt with a good dog.
Cheers👍
Hi, nice video, I appreciate the efforts you have put into making this. I am a BGID member and I was wondering if the hissing on the video related to a command to keep the Meg in close? Also I have tried a couple of different scope to camera mounts, not to a great amount of success, any thoughts?
Mint video bro. My pup whines just the same when a deer is close by. Its still early on in his deer hunting career but hes managed to get me two deer thus far. Im still keeping him on a long leed and staying on a track or open ridges. As he is still young he wants to rush around everywhere. Over time he will slow down and learn to be quiet... I hope.
Cheers bro, yea it’s definitely a bit annoying, but we still seem to shoot a deer nearly every hunt, yea you definitely want to put a bit of pressure on him if he’s doing it though👍
Do you make ya own subs? Bewdy looking dog bro.
Hey mate, yes I hand load my subs👍 Yea she is a nice pooch for sure👌
Hi there where did you get your puppy from
Got her from a local farmer in Whakatane, neighbouring dog jumped the fence and got his pig dog pregnant 😂
That’s a real cool hunt Lawrence! Did Meg wind the deer as you got closer? Well done! 👍👍👍
Cheers Darrell, yes she did get a wind here and there, it was going up the hill most of the time.👍
Good stalking. Dogs are amazing animals which have been closely and faithfully helping humans to hunt wild animals for the past million years or so. Great video.
Cheers Gregory, yes the dog is an amazing hunting tool, I really wish I had trained one properly years ago!👍
@@deertrackernz2203 The vast majority, hunting or otherwise, are not amazing. They've cost vastly more animals than gained, & most worship those that manage to get to mediocre. Like cats and children, ones own have few flaws. When commercial hunting it was made plain the few times with others (for same reasons, dogs are like their owners) bringing their wonder dog was a risk if it cost a deer, getting, not scaring was the objective & a shot dog ceases costing the livelihood. A happy dog returning after chasing off $1k of velvet doesn't warrant excuses.
Went for a hunt today and found a carcass, took some photos for my son to look at and we just started watching hunting videos now and we are watching it and realized it's the same deer I took photos of today!
Haha you think actually?? That would be hard case if it is!!!
100% the exact same deer haha was very freaky to see on here last night, my partner pointed out that it was the same.
Have photos of him if you wanna see
@@jordanhailstone3041 haha that’s awesome! Yea I’d love to see them, look me up on Facebook, Laurence Forrest, one account is old though, got hacked😩
Nice video!! how have you got the camera mounted on your rifle
Thanks mate, it’s a scope mount on the scope, and then the bottom half of a quick release ring with a modified top to screw the camera to, I’m just trying to modify it again to mount it a bit lower.
how old is Meg? she's so cute!! What kind of dog? sorry im new here. love the content!! you're a beast
Hey mate, she’s coming up 3 years old, her dad is a black lab, and mum is a pig dog with a mix of kelpy, ridgeback, bull cattle and more haha, Cheers man, I try👌
Really cool seeing Meg working the wind! I find your videos really helpful/ instructional. Keep them coming👍
It is really cool watching her work! Cheers Darrell, always appreciate your comments 👌
awsum mate ,great content, you are working well with the dog
Cheers mate, yes it definitely is a combined effort making it all come together 👍
Mean. Hey, I remember you like to get Meg onto wind scent as opposed to ground scent. On a day like this, was there much in the way of wind scent, or just the tiniest of micro currents? I'm finding my guy will take me on massive ground scent hikois only a few of which result in a deer. But , a short follow could result in. Kinda feeling I want to go on more windy days (for wind scent and noise management). Is that what you are looking for? The sunny days with no wind make it tough I've found. Windy, crappy rainy days, game on.
For me, the wind scent is ideal because you can pin point where the deer is, and wind is in your favour, and usually the deer is within 200m if meg has a wind, so I know it’s business time. Ground scent you are in for a bit of a ride, can have the wind up your arse at times to, and you just don’t know just how fresh that ground scent is or how long you might have to follow it. Any weather is good really, fine weather is awesome because it’s more comfortable to hunt in, and for me, it’s better for filming. On the flip side, yes, having a good solid breeze and a bit of rain is awesome for covering your noise, and giving good consistent wind scent. Can all depend on the area to, if bush is quiet under foot in dry conditions, then makes sense to go on a good day, but if it is really noisy with lots of leave litter, then a rainy wet day would probably be better. I hunt both conditions and have the same amount of success to be honest. It’s more about adapting to the conditions and getting out there 👍
@@deertrackernz2203 Yeah, makes perfect sense. Actually changed my view on what a "good day" to go is. Great thoughts. Find on those rice crispy under foot days that you put up a lot of deer from bedded in the sun. Keep up the awesome footage. Great when you highlight where the deer is (like circle it or point) as it's hard to see some times on youtube.
@@snoop2477 awesome, thanks for the feedback re pointing deer out, definitely need to do it with the GoPro footage as it can’t zoom, definitely need to sort my shit out with the gun camera😂👌
@@deertrackernz2203 You'd imagine the technology will catch up in the next few years!
@@deertrackernz2203 After a decade ploughing about monitoring poison drop results, concluded that, like fishing, best chance for getting something is being out there after them. And often couldn't tell if being sneaky would have encountered any more than when wasn't trying or particularly interested in them. Often got closer on windy/wet days before detection, works both ways. Tend to make less mistakes in fine conditions, but want to be a bit sharper to get a good %.
awesome bro. When Meg don't sit = deer close! haha. Very steady on the shot. Neat looking bush too, nice.
Haha yea she gets that little bum scoot on aye, yea i put the steady to the shot down to the fact she hadn’t seen them, or herd them, can be a different story if she does. Cheers
@@deertrackernz2203 Each dog to its own, as long as it isn't costing you animals (if it is it's a problem dog, & probably the majority are). It's preferable the dog gets closer to you as you get closer to the opposition. Ideally not having to shoot over the dog as it makes them deaf. What powder do you use?
@@johnmead8437 yea she hasn’t really cost me any deer, in fact, her little whine that she sometimes does gets deer to come back for a look. Yea that’s why I’ve gone with subsonics, to protect her hearing, and it’s not to often she ends up right in front of the shot. I use trailboss for the subsonics, there are a few others I think you can use.
Another great video! Thanks!
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed 👍
Awesome!!! Cheers for the vid bro. 🍻😎
Ah ha, the classic ‘I know better than my dog’ trick. I’ve fallen for that a few times! Great outcome in the end. Trust the dog… 😊
Why on earth I didn’t follow her is beyond me mate😂
Nice Vid. Always enjoy them. I'm mostly into longrange but have recently got a pup for the kids (Border Collie). Have taken it out on the goats already and the dog adds an exciting new dimension to hunting. Thanks for your vids for a bit of inspiration. I didn't realise that you were setup for longrange as well. Nice work. Longrange bush recoveries can definitely test ones nerves if solo/nightfall/steep as in vid). Cheers.
Cheers mate, yea I’ve done more long range then bush hunting, until I got Meg. Had a 300wsm for the long range in the end, but this set up is mint for both, won’t stretch the legs on it to much though, I like to keep under 450m. Yea that country there is bloody steep, but definitely manageable if you find the right path, that’s why I wanted to be off the hill by dark haha. Oh nice, nice digs those, and very intelligent! The dog for hunting is probably one of the best things you can have👍 cheers
Good effort bro. Yep, been there done that - the dog was going the right way all along and i thought I knew better - wrong! haha
Haha yea need to remember they are better than us at finding deer😆
Bone out da back legs co no bones to carry swt as chur
Nice bro, and good work Meg. Always trust the dog. The old yarn about wounded deer never going up hill is way off aye. Seen it a couple times. Yea the dogs
Mostly good work from Meg, I cut the footage her running up to meet the stag after it dropped, and me screaming at her to leave it😒 other then that, perfect 😄
@@deertrackernz2203 😂
Awesome effort. Respect
Good advice given. Another great vid.
Cheers Marius, glad you enjoyed👍
Good stuff Laurence - Meg did well.
Yes not to bad😂 apart from being a bit vocal on contact.
Meanness. They are sneakyvthe Sika. Meg's windication is easy to hear! Well done
She really gets the old nose going aye haha
Great vid. Meg is doing good.
Thanks mate, yes she is doing very well for the most part👍
Very good Vid mate & an ever better commentary. Thanks for sharing. Cheers.
Thanks for watching 👌

Good video. Fat stag. You tried an ELDX? Better for the bush, I reckon. :-)
Thanks mate, no I have not, I know they are bloody good though, these ELDM seem to do the business so far 👌
Amazing Hunter my friend 😊
Thanks mate👍
great video good solid stag and a pretty even head ,,hard work was all worth while and a beer to end the hunt cant ask for better than that nice one m8
Cheers Shane👌🍻
Noice
Awesome, what was the weight in the end ?
Dunno mate I forgot to weigh them🙄😁
Mean. The pup is doing really well on the commands. Well done on all the training and patience
Mmmm yes and no to the commands thing😂 she can be a bit hard to make sit when we are really getting close, but she is definitely proving her weight in gold.
@@deertrackernz2203 yup but if she is anything like my pup... She makes mistakes and isn't perfect, but man will she take you to deer!
