Fascinating! I am a sitarist from California. I am a disciple of Ud Ali Akbar Ks. I sat at his feet from 1971to 1982 mostly in California at his Ali Akbar College of Music. I also learned from Pt Nikhil Banerjee, Pt Ravi Shankar, Ud Ashish Ks, Dr George Ruckert. Except for a 5 month sojourn in Calcutta in 1979 where with my guruji's permission I studied with Pt Radhika Mohan Maitra, almost all of my taleem was in California. I have been in India 4 times. In India I had the opportunity and pleasure to perform on the Hindustani circuit. I have performed in Calcutta, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune and Trivandrum. In 1970s I gave many performances in San Francisco. My function then was to introduce Hindustani music as an "insider-outsider" by performing in venues that were for European art music. To be sure, in all my years studying at and being involved with Ali Akbar College there have been tons of politics. Especially, with regards to which non-Indian artist would teach at AACM or perform. In this situation not only is there a hierarchal structure but a distinct cross-cultural dynamic. At times it was like British Raj in reverse. But over the years I rarely got the sense that beloved guruji Ud Ali Akbar Ks exploited non-Indian students. Khansahib passed away in 2009. Since then there has been the emgence to the fore of his 2 sons Alam and Manik both of whom have an American mother. I have made my voice heard in resistance to the continued "Khansahib chavinism" pertuated by AACM currently and the supression of the older students some of which were founders of AACM. Scads of politics!

Aarshin da I watched this over the weekend. A true jewel of an interview. Sorry did not have a chance to see this carefully till now. She is so stunning , that extreme intelligence, talent, & brightness just flows all over her thoughts, perceptions, ideas. Art teaching in schools, and why should general folks be immersed in the basics, the guru parampara and interestingly, why ‘at some stage’ one should devise one’s one style, as she says, your ‘voice is your body’, politics, money issues for artists, IP for artists and recognition of musical originality, true source !. What an immense artist Shubha Mudgal is. Majestic !! I would die to see her sing live !!! How can we truly support Surasik ! Keep churning these so profusely healing ❤️‍🩹 i

There should be a rule for musician interviews: that they cannot use the word or the concept of ‘God’. Unless they are willing to subtitle it as “privilege”! I’ve no doubt that Amaan ji is a wonderful human being, really chill, and boy what a looker. But seriously, full halls shouldn’t be the only index of musical prowess. Full halls to I’m sure striptease main bhi hota hai. And this fatalism is supremely ignorant and smug. Though it is understandable: riyaaz biceps ka ho aur taj mousiqi ka, to yeh fatalism nahin to kya hai. Though I do sympathise with the accidents of birth which, in a feudal country as ours, enjoin upon the elder son to inherit well from the father.

Peasants are poor because they deserve to be. Haven’t we heard this trope a thousand times before from followers of Friedman and Hayek?
