Man I want to get into this game but the price is steep for what you get, with no playing pieces. Wish they would make the rules and playing aids a free a PDF. The map and pieces a bundle that is worth well entry wise. Even map PDF would be cool and I can 3d print my own pieces.
The rulebook and errata/ notes are available for download on the website. I'm gonna fenangle my own game of sorts from what HBG published here and what I got at home.
Okay, I randomly stumbled upon this video and I’m just curious: today we have so many technical options and so many strategy war games on the computer or even some on consoles. Why do you actually prefer to spend obviously so much time and money to have a complete real room and a custom table and all those things only to play this game over just having it all setup on your desk and as soon as you switch it off, you still have a tidy desk and can jump back to work or whatever? It’s an honest question, I’m genuinely interested. The second question is, what game is that and where can I find more about it?
@@marco1941 the game is Global War 85, and it’s published by www.historicalboardgaming.com. To answer the first question, this is the gaming style I grew up with. As kids we played actual board games, some were too big for a kitchen table. So there is a good bit of nostalgia. I play computer games and enjoy them, but looking at the game laid out on my table feels more immersive. Rather than scrolling around a screen I look down on the battle map and move force counters around as real generals did for many years. It’s my hobby. Some guys collect stamps, art, memorabilia, cars… The armies and navies you see in the video are my collection. Many of us who play this game were of draft age in the 80s and can’t help wondering what it might have been like if the world had gone over the edge. For more information check out the HBG website. Also go to my channel page and look at the playlists. You’ll find links to other player’s videos as well. And feel free to ask more questions.
Hey! Former 11th ACR Soldier here. 1984-1986. F26, Fox Troop, 2/11 ACR, Bad Kissingen, then HHT Regt in Fulda, command group driver. The intel at the time had 3rd Guards army coming through the Rasdorf bowl on the border on its way to Fulda. Col. White and then Col. Driskill commanding.
Great Intro and explanation of the YT War name. Quick but effective turn. Well done Comrade with both placement of new Rocket Arty and NATO finally acknowledging that the Black Sea is a Soviet Sea.
@@ozarkoutpost I will endeavour to do so, starting tonight. I have dinner with some war game buddies. We all served together in the 1980's and 1990's (at one stage training to be the third echelon of replacements for mech forces in a possible fight in 1985 West Germany), but nowadays, of course, we're all retired. Broadcasts like yours are a real inspiration. Love your figure collection and their paint job.
Great video Ozark. For those starting from scratch, this game does not have the Axis & Allies equivalent games that allow you to start from a strong position. But I’ll share that when I joined the GW85 playtest team, I was using GW2025 pieces & markers, Amerika pieces and GW36/39 and Axis & Allies pieces & markers. I built up my GW85 sets over time - took most of a year and I’m still using misc Infantry sculpts and base markers from other games. I still use GW2025 Infantry instead of terrorist markers and GW39 base markers in my GW85 game. So just starting, it might be necessary to use T34s for Soviet/Warsaw Pact armor or GW2025 attack helos instead of a Hind or Apache.. But it lets you play the game right away as you fill in your game with the sculpts you want. (And take advantage of the 3D sculpt sale to get pieces you want /need.) So great to see this game finally be released to the community.
Anyone know a rough estimate of the cost to acquire all the required pieces. This is basically my dream board game but I'm afraid the cost of entry is pretty prohibitive. Thinking of picking up the base game and maybe picking at the pieces over time.
I calculated all the 3D pieces based on the recommended list, and they are over $1100 without roundels and tokens. That is if you go off the website alone, though.
@@thomashopkins20 ouch, well maybe I can piece somthing together in a decade or so LOL. Until then I guess I'll scavage pieces from old axis and allies boxes.
I have a 3D PLA printer. I plan to print out my own units; Triangle shapes for air; ovals for naval and rectangles for land units. I will use color to show different factions, and markers as needed.

Great example of how each game of GW85 is unique. Impressive job in managing the war for all 7 factions. Eager to see how this one ends.
Very interesting war. The nuclear escalations should really spike up the cost of war on both sides.
