How to fix loose shifter on volvo 240 automatic. If you found this helpful, please like and share. Thanks. diagram link. www.volvopartswebstore.com/images/parts/volvo/fullsize/GR-44485.jpg
Seems no one does the top bushings for side to side play in the shifter
I know it's sorta your schtick, but lose the fake accent. Poorly done and annoying.
cool, i'm needing one for the rear drivers side for a power window. mine is stuck down at the moment :/
hi did u jack car from the rear diff? thanks
No, I lifted it from the front subframe. Then jack stands at the 4 points.
How did you get the shaft to split ? Is it just a push fit ?
Exactly that. Simply pull it apart to remove and push it back in for assembly.
Thank you for this. I will be renewing the engine rear main seal on my 740 and will see if i need to do this while I have the transmission out
too funny, would like to see you hold character next time haha
haha thanks!
As Curly would say..."yer moidering the kings English"!...good vid!
Cheers!
Thank you Matthew for putting this together. Working on my '91 right now and there's lots to do. A few people below inquired about the SNAP RINGS you used - and if I am not mistaken I think you used a 5/16" snap ring. At about 19 seconds into the video, if you reverse and flip the video image - I think that the plastic bags say 5/16" and not 2/16" as you had described below. I have never heard of a 2/16" anything. BTW - have you had any issues with the auto shift lock button NOT releasing back up into the locked position? I have no issues with the shift lock solenoid and it clicks just fine when stepping on the brake - but now the button will not pop up and so I can literally shift into any position (P-R-N-D-2-1) without stepping on the brake or manually releasing the shift mechanism using the little yellow switch at the back of the shift box (late 240's have this). Everyone else seems to have the opposite problem of the shift lock getting stuck in PARK (locked) and then not releasing. Mine does the opposite! Thanks for your any help and keep up the accent!
Christopher Laskoski yeah. It’s def a 5/16”. This is a few years old, I really don’t remember why I would have said that. Anyways, not locking... I’ve only had the locking issue you mentioned... let me check my Bentley manual and see if I can locate any information about this for you. When you shift in between gears, is the linkage engaging the transmission and just not locking?
Did you figure out how to fix this? My '93 240 started doing this today.
So what brand bushing and bearing did you use ? Thanks
Paige Pryor I used parts sourced from ipd. They were aftermarket but I’m not sure what brand.
Matthew Vuckovich how did it turn out ? I saw the aftermarket on ipd
Paige Pryor so far so good. I have not had any issues since I did this job. It’s been multiple years and thousands of miles so I think I would recommend it.
Matthew Vuckovich do you think the Oe bushing and seal is better though . Even though aftermarket is okay .. ipd still both
Paige Pryor OEM is usually better.
Hey was size bearing is that and what brands did you use fir the parts? Thanks
You'll need to check your drive shaft size. They have a 2'' bearing and a 1.75". You can can kit a complete kit on IPD for like 15-30$ depending on your driveline.
I have 1.75 and I see Ipd has a Mtc bearing support and a 1.75 skf bearing . I heard mtc was cheap floppy stuff as far as the carrier bearing support .
Is that kendal grease ?
@@moonglow1158 MTC can be alright in some cases, but you can always order the OEM volvo original through a dealership or ipd, fcp euro or see what rock auto offers. i'm using lucas extra heavy duty grease
just a few notes: - i've found a pointed knife blade works better to pull out the decorative screw covers and the handle screw cover. BTW the handle cover gets detached from the knob side. the door latch cover just pulls straight out to free it. - at :14 the 2 screws don't come out before you lift the map holder straight up to release it from the screws in the door, you tilt the holder up and out 90 degrees towards you to release it from the door panel, then you can pull it straight out, then you remove the screws on the both ends. - the door panel removal can use some coaxing with a flathead driver to try to pull the plastic plugs out of the door with it so as to not destroy the fiberboard panel keyhole slots. - when removing the spring clips, specially the one on the right that you can't see, remember, when pulling the clip end up you only want to pull up on the very center of the clip, not the full width of the clip (specially if you have large fingers), i wasted an unbelievable amount of time learning that). - i replaced a power window lift with manual lift and they are two different units, if you are wondering, they are two completely different units, the motor is not something added on to a manual lift. to get the power lift out i had to unbolt the motor from the lift so it would fit through the opening. - don't forget to reinstall your washers. add some oil and grease to joints and gears while you've got it all apart, and inspect for sources of water leaks while you are in there to keep her rolling for another decade. - i didn't have to replace my glass so removing glass from the rail can be done with a hammer and screwdrivers, which is what i did at the junkyard where i found my replacement regulators. -thanx for the video, Matthew.
I have a Volvo it a 240
Did you friction fit the lift rail to the window or did you use an adhesive?
Adam Montoya I had a spare window with the rail already attached from another 240. If you’re inserting a new window into the rail I would probably friction fit first to see how secure it is. If not I would use an adhesive. Hope this helps.
@@TransitorHollow1 My window keeps on dropping from the rail (at least I think so, I am just about to open the door). I that's the problem, I will use som adhesive.
Kristian Kalin if the window is slipping or dropping into the door it’s an issue with the window regulator device. This is designed like a scissor jack. Make sure the weld in the center isn’t breaking or disconnected. If the window feels loose or wobbles. An adhesive might make it more secure. But a window that drops is from a failing regulator.
@@TransitorHollow1 I managed to fix it an put all pieces back to where they belong. Thanks for the video. I live in the north of Sweden where we have long, cold winters. The window had probably frozen to the rubber strip last winter as nothing was damaged except that the window was not attached to the scissor jack. I put it back and had to use so much force that I hope I don´t need the adhesive that I thought I had in my other car... Anyway, now that I know howto fix it it's easier. I put silicone oil on all the rubber strips, even down in the door. The window moves much easier now. Thanks once more for this video. Here is an link to a video of me drifting on the ice roads in the archipelago outside the town of Luleå. I'm a really crappy drifter, but the filming is good and the music excellent! :) ua-cam.com/video/xoSLI0gPVjY/v-deo.html&
Kristian Kalin very Nice, Glad you got it all sorted out. Thanks for the video link. Looks like a fun time!
What is the part, original, not the hardware store retaining clip used to hold the ends of the control rod, I've searched Google as well as ipd, FC Euro, etc with not luck finding what it's called, or item number.
You would need to contact a Volvo dealership and ask them for a direct part number. I think it's part 48 on the end diagram but I'm not sure. I know I've been able to have the dealership track down the specific part that isn't available online. Best of luck.
@@TransitorHollow1 I contacted FC Euro, they gave me the name of the part which I searched on the Volvo dealership web site, and found the parts with their schematic diagrams.
What was the mallet presser, chisel thing you used to hammer new bearing down into place with? Other vids, a guy used part of the old bearing as a spacer/sacrificial bashed to cold chisel it down into place. Other vids, they say go to a machine shop and get it pressed on professional styl
It's a bearing and seal driver. You can pick one up at harbor freight or amazon for like 20-40$
Nice vid! Thanks much, ya hippie hahahahaha I agree though, this world needs peace and love over division and hate
Haha thanks! I quite agree.
Rad. This sorted me out. Good video, thanks.
Megan Herring Thanks! Happy to help.
Awesome!
Thanks! If there are any repair videos you'd like to see made, just let me know.
NICE. THOROUGH. THANKS!
Hey great video, is that a 2 ton or 3 gear puller?
Thanks, it's a 2 ton gear puller. You can pick it up at almost any hardware store.
Did you index the driveshaft before you removed it so it went back the same way?
Kris Cringle I didn't. I just put it back on and haven't had any issues.
See that how everyone else's luck runs. If I did that it would bounce all over the road.
This actually doesn't look like that hard of a job to do. Thanks for the demonstration on it so I can show my mechanic that I usually take my car to how easy it is lol.
Anarchist's Theory, Thanks for the comment, glad it helped. They sell the replacement parts in a kit at ipd.
Hey IPD makes a special tool set (actually a reproduction Volvo tool) to replace that AW70 bushing and seal without removing the tailshaft! Makes it like a 5 minute job fyi. A guy on turbobricks rents it.
Dingus Fassbender dang, I'll have to check that out, I have a few other 240s and that'll make my life much easier. Thanks!
What bushing and bearing do you recommend ? Skf or aftermarket on ipd?
You were doing a late 240 in the video (86-93) and that exploded diagram you are using is from an early (pre 84) which is why you thought the previous owner had switched the retaining clips. When doing my 87 I noticed the clips were on different ends of the linkage compared to that diagram also. And to anyone that asked, MTC 666143 is the part # you want. 2 series use 2 of them and 7 series use 3.
Dingus Fassbender thanks for the comment! Yeah this was an 87".
What size bushings are 35 and 4 ?, the same as the ones in the video ? Thanks
I believe they are different... you would want to give ipd or fcp a call and ask about the part.
We put newcbushings from Ipd in mine but it's still loose down there and the shifter iscstii stiff when shifting
I used a 2/16'' retaining clip and not sure on the washer size, i just reused the old one. I'm not sure why it would still be loose without looking at it but if you look at the diagram at the end of the video you will see there is a few bushings besides the two I mention in the video that usually fix the problem. The shifter will be a little stiff till it sets in. This video shows how to fix part #47 and #42 in diagram. You might need to replace #35 or #4. Here is a link to a better quality of the diagram. www.volvopartswebstore.com/images/parts/volvo/fullsize/GR-44485.jpg
Also what size washer ?
Also does a washer go on the end of the adjuster sleeeve?
What size is the retaining clips ?
Gotta say dude, I love the video, easily the most entertaining and helpful for this problem. I got a 940 with the same problem. And you had the blown up diagram at the end I was looking everywhere for. Keep the accent up, I love it!
Thanks, man! I really appreciate the comment.
Hi, the front bushing looks Black and the back one appears to be White . Are you using the same White bushing in the front and back? I have the identical problem on my 940. Thank you so much for showing the fix.
Yeah. I used the same bushing on the front and back. You can get the bushing from ipd or Mtc off amazon.
Great video, thanks from a fellow Volvo enthusiast
Pro tip- Once you are ready to install the bushings set them on top of a light bulb until they get nice and soft spray with a little lube and they pop right in no effort.
+Cornelius McCoy That's a great tip, thanks for the comment. I'll be rebuilding the entire drive train this sping so that'll be help. Cheers.
That is a fantastic tip, I struggled for almost an hour trying to shove that bushing in there the first time I did these!
What size retaining clips are those? I'm having a hard time getting information on them. Thank you!
+greasegram Which retaining clip? The one I mention in the beginning I believe was a 5/16 l’m not sure what the clip size at 3:44 would be. Sorry for just seeing this.
Thanks for the video, helpful!
Halzar Anytime, I'm glad it was helpful. If you need anymore help or have any suggestions/requests for videos, let me know. Sometimes the online forums are extremely vague.
