a first turn strat that i found interesting is that you can sell all your research to all other nations for a boost in cash. on turn 1, not all other nations have everything researched, but by turn 2 they do. so its often useful to do this. last time i tried this i got 20-30k turn 1

If i recall correctly, the AI puts its ships in formations, meaning that if you slow the lead ship the rest will slow to match the leader. it can be worth hitting other ships at that point rather than routing the lead ship, which will break it from the formation and let the rest regain speed. useful if you're running out of sea to back up into.

i have 2000 hrs in this game and i have NEVER finished a navel battle, its way too slow and boring and simply not worth the effort. spam medium bunes and auto resolve if you have the money. Even if you lose and enemy navy completely overpowers you on the campaign map, the AI just isn't smart enough to beat you. They always send army's to the same shores which are easy to defend. even in the late game when the AI constantly spam full stack naval units, there's just no real point to counter them as they pose absolutely no threat to your settlements. you can literally beat this game, completely ignoring naval altogether.

3 or 4 bow kobayas is all you need to take down that fleet. More than that is wasting money. Sengoku bunes are best attacked from the rear. All their archers are at the front of the boat, so attacking from the rear means they cannot fire back. You can put the fire out on your boats. Stop firing, stop moving and hit the repair button.

Great guide and demonstration. I always neglect the archery tree but yeah, fire works pretty well on wooden boats huh?
