My name is Joel Alexander and I'm a 16-year-old violinist/organist. I'm considering pursuing music studies in college and plan to post about my journey toward this decision. I'll occasionally share solo and ensemble performances on this channel. I have 4 younger brothers who are also up and coming string players. Watch for their cameo appearances.
Jingle Bells for string quartet, arr. George A. Speckert
I was invited to perform for a Christmas music soirée. I convinced my brothers and a friend to join me for part of the program and we played through the Merry Christmas collection for string quartet by George A. Speckert.

Can you hear the melody within this highly ornamented setting of a beloved Advent hymn? You'll notice a lot of chiff in the 8' flute on our Rieger tracker organ when I move to the upper manual.

Can you please do Puer natus in Bethlehem, Alleluia?
How on earth do they fit 23 ranks in that space??? that is miniscule! wonderful instrument, great playing.
This is wonderful! Please film in landscape next time!
Mooi!
Dat is een technisch pareltje !
Zeer mooi en innig gespeeld!
I wish I was his neighbour. 🫂
Amazing as always! Just wish it would have been longer!
Excellent work! Bravo, Sir!
That was some arrangement! Everyone likes "Jingle Bells" but the word "ethereal" isn't usually the first word that springs to mind to describe it... but it was this time!
beautiful! i’m loving the Christmas songs!!! ❤
It's never occurred to me before that the tune Stuttgart would go with this hymn, but it seems to work fine 👍 Lovely little instrument ! Is it possible to post the specification ?

@Alexander_Acoustics Thank you !
@Alexander_Acoustics Thank you ! I will check that out
What a gem of an instrument and for its size, so complete in specification and such a lovely piece to look at. It would be an organists dream to have a similar instrument in their home, thank you so much for sharing.
Very nicely done. Love your phrasing
STUTTGART will always be one of my favorite hymn tunes!
Thank you my dear brooooooo
That was Beautiful. Thank you for sharing. I'm looking forward to the next video.
Beautifully played! 🎶🎄🎶
God bless you my brother
Remember bro we are brothers forever... God bless you and your family and friends
What a very beautiful house organ (it puts those of us who resort to Hauptwerk sample sets to shame!). You give a gorgeous performance of this much-loved setting by Brahms of 'Es ist ein Ros entsprungen', capturing all the emotion in the music (the 1897 Op. 122 being the last set of compositions by Brahms before he died, and dedicated to the memory of Clara Schumann): B R A V O !
On termine par une belle cadence plagale... Bravo !
Often a small maybe 16 register pipe organ with principals, flutes, some mutations and mixtures, maybe a subbass and a prinzipalbass is much better than a giant 60 register pipe organ that just goes out of tune in a month😅
I played hymns like that too. I broke in all four parts at the end of each phrase. I played that way for years because that's what my teacher at college taught me. As I listened to that over the years, I felt it was too choppy. So I listened to other organists. The proper way to play this hymn, in order to make it not sound choppy, is to break JUST the right hand part at the end of the first phrase. Continue to hold the pedal and left hand parts. It makes a phrase, but keeps the music going. Then make a FULL break after the second phrase, that is, half way through the hymn (or any hymn). And, of course, a full break at the end. This works well with many hymns. The music continues with a nice flow, and doesn't get broken up too much into a bunch of separate phrases, but a sense of phrasing still continues. Listen to the organists at Westminster Abbey. I LOVE the little pipe organ.
this is one of my favorite Christmas hymns! thank you!!!
Fantastic!
Thank you for this! Beautifully played! “Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming”, known in the original German as „Es ist ein Ros’ entsprungen“ is a Christmas Carol in English -perfect from Advent through Epiphany- and is a Marian Hymn in German. There are at least three pieces of music (that I know of) to which the lyrics have been set. The Johannes Brahms version is beautiful!… I believe it was one of his last pieces, written in 1896, only the year before his death. Michael Schultze (also spelt 'Schultheis', with his name usually written in Latin as 'Michael Prætorius' or 'Michaël Prätorius') wrote the “Praetorius version ” believed to be the oldest, found in the „Alte Catholische Geistliche Kirchengeseng auff die fürnemste Feste“ more often known simply as the „Das Speyerer Gesangbuch von 1599 n. Chr.“… i.e. “The 1599 Speyer Hymnal”. The Praetorius version is one of my all-time Christmas favourites, along with Gustav Holst's 1906 version of “In the Bleak Midwinter” known as ‘Cranham’. (There's also another version of the latter: ‘In the Bleak Midwinter’ by Harold Darke… beautiful too!) If you can't tell, I was inclined to play myself once, long ago -but my abilities were limited to the keyboard: piano and organ… (my talent was limited too)- where you are as skilled at the organ as on the violin… and more, I shouldn't be surprised! Regardless of your future choice of further studies, I wish you well! Thanks again for this video… and ‘Happy Christmas’ when it comes!
@Alexander_Acoustics I should think the greatest advantage to the two versions of the two pieces I cited, is that both can be played on an organ without 'four-or-more' manuals, or a volley en chamade… or more pipes than the New York City Water Board; (to say nothing of the appropriate acoustical setting). Both the Praetorius version of “Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming” and the Gustav Holst version of “In the Bleak Midwinter” i.e. ‘Cranham’ could even be played without a Swell (as can a good deal of baroque). Beauty in simplicity is something for which I had to strive, as I neither had the organ nor the technical ability for Widor's Toccata from Symphony for Organ No. 5 in F minor… however, something tells me that one -although a challenge for any organist- wouldn't actually be a problem for you. (Do forgive my being overly loquacious and my "musical insights" -merely privileged glimpses of the bloody obvious- only, I had forgotten that I, too, felt passionately about music once. Your playing may have stirred a long-dormant auditory memory). All the best! P.S. Although the piano & organ were my thing, I think it was your violin playing I found most moving.
Lovely little tracker.... Obviously a little period. I would call this organ a sweet little lady or a perfect little lady....
So sweet, thank you.
What a beautiful and touching interpretation!
