The old 99 across from me in Alhambra reopened as Dollar Tree very quickly and its great. The building is so big that the store is very spacious, nice wide aisles and well stocked.

After 2011 when a private equity company bought them out, prices started to go a bit, stores started selling beer & wine which attracted more shoplifting, and under staffing got real bad like only 3 employees per shift. Always a long line to check out in crampt check out aisles- 30 minutes was common, but customers forgave it because lots of deals where still common especially on dry grocery items & produce- if it wasn't spoiled. Around 2017 they started raising prices on frozen food equaling regular supermarkets. Then in 2020 most of the deals stopped, incorrect price labels on shelves were common making it impossible to know if an item was a good price, you check out and the item you thought was $1.29 was in fact $1.69, $2.29 or $2.99. Very irritating and that pushed 75% of regular customers away. Then in 2024 California raised it minimum wage to $16 hr, that pushed the company over the edge when combined with gigantic shoplifting at their stores in bad areas and high inflation. Today they filed for bankruptcy, pathetic. How a company worth $1.6 billion in 2011 has to file for bankruptcy over just $60 million in debt? Sounds suspicious. Mismanagement or looting of assets by the private equity firm or both. Pathetic!
