Crocker Mountain Exscream
Some neighbors on Crocker Mountain (in Blowing Rock North Carolina) building a ramp during a snow. I think it was the winter of 1998-1999. When the camera pans downhill, the lights in the sky are Appalachain Ski Mountain. The participants are Brandon, Byrd, Al, Alison, Lee, Phil, Chris and Rhett. Obviously some of us were new to snowboarding. Background music is tool. Rest in peace Alex McSwain.

Sailing a canoe around Ocracoke Island from Oyster Creek to Silver Lake Harbor. It's a Mad River Canoe with a Snark sail. I bought the sail from "Sailboatstogo". The ama is all handmade by me. the pontoon is Styrofoam coated in fiberglass. The daggerboard and assembly are cedar coated in fiberglass. I capsized in Silver Lake Harbor (my new ama is much lighter than my old wood one, requiring mor...

Hi Very nice rig ,,,your pontoon is awesome but it's not big enough,,,and I think that you need to pontoons,,,,, you will get a lot better ride ,,,not just the one ,,,,,good job well done mate. 😉 😀
Nice clean bike, love the blue
Ain't much to the Nantahala. One of the easiest class II runs anywhere. You could paddle a jon boat down it.
Respect!!! Thanks for sharing.
Nicely done , it sails quite well.
Just found your video. I went sailing to Ocracoke island sat and sailed home Sunday and was in rough seas and stormy weather both ways.. but we were a Pearson 323. Lol I been wanting to copy your set on my canoe, is there any way I could talk you into letting me have a peak at your rig and try to copy it? Thanks
If you wanted to text or call me my number is 919 - seven zero nine - eight one zero one
Yeah, I have lots of pics of the build. The hardest part was the mast step/ foot. The sail came with a weak one. I borrowed an aluminum welder and made a stronger one. The rest was mid-level woodworking and fiberglassing.
@@hajjiinater that's awesome. If you don't mind me copying you, I got a 14' sundolphine plastic flat stern type canoe. I think I can get an aluminum shoe made up if had something to go by. If you like you can send them to me in a text.. 9197098101.. As for my fairly unused canoe it's in great shape and came with an aftermarket seating installed but I got the original seats. I have tried to build outriggers but only find out what does not work.... Like two liter coke bottles... Back in 1986, I took a sunfish from chocowinity..not sure how it's spelled.. and sailed all the way to pamlico point, camping on the deck with the boat pulled up in the mud. A few times I had someone offered me a dock at a private pier, and even a huge heck of dinner from an older couple. I want to do that trip and also want to try the Ocracoke island trip once in a canoe... I figured we were going 6.5 knots on the Pearson 323 Saturday and Sunday, both ways and dodged crab pots and a gale blowing both days. It took roughly 6 hours for the trip, starting from McCotters marina.
Cool rig! Where did you buy the sail?
Sailboatstogo
Do you have any plans for outrigger?
No, I made it up and have altered it over the years. Now I use a different outrigger that is just shaped out of dock foam coated in fiberglass (lighter). That wood one was heavier, but the weight did make it harder to capsize.
@@hajjiinater do you think that it would be possible to do a trimaran?
@@martinjager2136 yes, I only did a single outrigger for light weight and easy to transport on top of my truck.
I love the ama, and Leeboard slot, very nice work. I hope you don't mind if I take a note. I'm in need of a rig that can be easily disassembled like this. Very nice man.
Thanks, check my other videos. I have made improvements, but kept the leeboard set up the same, works good.

Doing anymore bike videos??
I will one day. Hard to get someone to help film.

Seht schön und interessant!
This will hopefully be my next bike!

I really like the design of this rig...the outrigger, the daggerboard through the slot in the whole assembly & the lashings to hold the out- rigged hull onto the structure. How did you accomplish this, or design this?
I wanted a rig that can be taken apart and all fit inside the canoe when transported on a vehicle or while paddling like a regular canoe.
1. Do you ever have any issues of your rig sliding or gunwale clamps coming loose when sailing? 2. What kind of wood did you use and its dimension? 3. What's the dimensions of your cross members from gunwale to pontoon 4. What's the spacing of your rig from bow to stern of your cross members? Sorry for all the question but I just LOVE your design!
I glued rubber to the bottom of the frame where it contacts the gunwales and I attach the frame right up against the yoke (it hasn't slid yet). The wood is cedar (light weight). My plan for dimensions are big as possible, BUT it must be able to slide into the canoe when not in use (to be car topable for transport and be able to fit whole rig in canoe if you want to paddle without it). When I attach it, the dagger board is in right in front of center (yoke), this lets it stall out if you stop ruddering with the paddle (lee helm, I think is the sailing term).
Is the wood 1" x 3" or 1"x4"? What did you use to make the mast foot and Is anchored to the bottom permanently?
the "frame" was built from 1"X3" cedar (common at my hardware store), then coated in fiberglass for extra strength. Under it is angle aluminum for the dagger board slot. The mast foot was bought from Sailboatstogo, the sail rig also. It is not anchored to the bottom, it has rubber feet.
You have no issues with the mast foot sliding or moving? That is my biggest hurdle. I didn't want my mast foot permanent or epoxied to the canoe
The mast foot that came from sail boats to go is adjustable with rubber feet on the bottom. You can adjust it to be tight against the floor of the canoe. It works pretty good. I'll admit I did bolt a larger piece of aluminum to the bottom of it, and glue rubber to the bottom of that to make the foot larger and fit the bottom of my V Hull a little better.
nice sailing :) well done!
I notice you added a mast foot since your last video. Does it just rest on the bottom of the canoe? Now that you have drove it around the block a few times, would you do anything different in your design? Curious to see your steering rig
what boats are you guys paddling? looks like a discovery and two explorers?
Your right, one explorer is a 14' and one a 16'
looks like a blast! I might have to get up there with my explorer one of these days!
nice.....!
where did you get the flush mounts from?
Nick Pehlke I bought it used, they were on it. I don't see a brand name.
Going to be putting gen 2 handle bar on this weekend, I think, ordered new grips for it. Hope the bar fits with the GYTR risers =) I love this bike. Only way Id be changing is for an 09 cobalt blue =)
I highly advise these guys take a white water beginner course. One gains so much helpful knowledge that provides one with far better powerful strokse and other white water tricks with a paddle to make paddling more fun.
oh and you have GYTR risers, like I do except i bought them with a bunk bolt and now its a pain to find one, any ideas? The bolt that sicks into the bottom of the risers and then thru the triple tree to have a nut on it...im running out of ideas personally. Home depot Lowes ACE etc nope nope nope
+Extralarge Dave That riser was on my bike when I bought it used. The bolts on mine look original to the bike (they look older than the GYTR riser). Some OEM bolts might fit that riser?
Hey man, you used the pazzo blue levers? I have some with the 719 grips exactly like yours, my levers are the shortys, just verifying what they are, cause i cant decide whether to change my black levers out for the blue =)
+Extralarge Dave yeah, they say pazzoracing on them. they are adjustable, closer and farther from the grip. I like them. they came on it when I bought the bike used.
Is it easy to change the grips
+Extralarge Dave Yes. Use steel wire and twist it like a twist tie on both ends of each grip to keep them in place. Most grips have a channel for the wire.
+hajjiinater It was super simple - especially once you realize that one grip is bigger than the other for the throttle..../bonk
Not really what most people would call flat water canoes. Usually those have keels. As a High Schooler I ran the Natahala from above Patton's run to below the falls several times in an 80's vintage Blue Hole canoe that was really no different that what you are running, and by no means a flat water canoe Nice video though
+bud wiper I just called them flat water boats because two of them were 16 footers (v hulls). Nantahala falls just swamps them so we take out above. some kayak kids, geared up to the max, said we were old school for paddling 16 footers on that.
Bud, I have an Old Town Discovery, and while it does not have a keel, it has almost zero rocker. So, it is not a whitewater boat. Having said that, it is a lot of fun to paddle downstream in some whitewater.
Yep, bought my Mad River Explorer back in the late 70s. That boat was state of the art back then. Took that boat down just about every run in the south. Still have it and in good shape. Jumped on the solo white water canoes as soon as they came out. Thats why its still around
where do you launch from
+Scott Thompson I launch from rental houses on Oyster Creek when I vacation there.
what is that above your top yoke on the handle bars mate
It's just a large handlebar mount by gyt-r. the previous owner put it on.
You sir, have just eliminated all my sleepless nights thinking of the best way to build a sail rig for my canoe. I was on the 11th hour of watching literally 100's of sailing videos when I came upon yours. One question, how did you do the Mast foot What size is the square tubing of the mast holder?
1 1/2" square tubing welded to both sides of 1/4" plate (wing nut to outrigger arm). mast slides into square tube on top, and a "foot" slides in to square tube on bottom. I got square tubing that had same inside diameter as the thickness of my mast.
Thank you so much for the information. Last few questions. Do you still prefer the side dagger board? Is that angle iron undeneath youroutrigger frame? To help support the dagger board agasint the side force of the water ?
deltafour1212 The side dagger board works well. It used to chatter (common with dagger boards) until I sharpened the trailing edge. That is angle aluminum underneath. Bolts and spacers at either end will keeping it from bending (lots of force is put on that dagger board).
Thank you so much for your help.
Same I've drawn dozens of designs and watched hundreds of proa videos this is it man. I would like to ask though do you think you could spread a net tightly across the outriggers and sit on it. I plan on using pvc for the ama or pontoon. I'm going to reach in at arms length put a bolt with a thick rubber washer through from the inside and attach it to the wood with wing nut for quick disassembly then I'm going to full the pvc with spray foam and around the bolt bast use rtv silicone to seal the bolt I've tested that part. I'm curious to your opinion as you seem to be more inventive than me my goal is to be able to drop anchor and sit comfortable on the net while I fish perhaps even using the Lee board as a recliner.
very impressive and professional looking modification of canoe, shows what is possible with a bit of ingenuity- something to aspire to !
Neat homemade pontoon. Since it is lighter you can fly it easier when it's to the windward. Have you noticed going any faster when it is out of the water?
Yes, a little. It is fun to fly it, even if the risk of capsize is greater.
Where's the commmentary? At least tell us what kind of beer you're drinking later that night! Now, all you need is a .50 Cal mounted to the stern!! Eeee-aaaAAAW
I watch a lot of sailing videos, and I just can't think of any boat a person has modified to make into a sailboat that seems to sail as well as what you have done with your canoe. Very dry, fast and stable. Great job.
thanks.
where did you get the front pegs at? I have the same bike and I cant find those anywhere.
They are frame sliders, not pegs. I do use them as pegs (to stretch) on long rides. Pegs would be safer.
v nice i too have one with the black engine much nicer looking and it doesnt flake off over time unlike the silver ones ,,,greetings from ireland ,,shiny side up
Still, beautiful work.
Thanks. I have made some improvements since then. I'll make another video soon.
One ama makes it more a proa!
They are flush mounted LED's. I don't know the name brand.
What are the front turn signals?
I have no trouble sailing upwind. It works a little better (up wind) with the wind coming from the starboard side, I think because the lee board is straight down. Wind from port side causes outrigger to fly (fun), and lee board is at an angle (but can still sail upwind).
I really, really like the the dagger/lee board set up. The single outrigger challenged my thinking, but I was eventually able to wrap my head around it...somewhat. Are you able to do well on all points of sail? Can you sail an upwind course without much trouble? I will be checking out you other vids after seeing this one. Thanks for sharing.
Your welcome Yep that would be my Comp 1 core, which makes the best overall power and mid range on the Gen 1 FZ1s Cheers DW
Thank you. I love your slip on pipe, nice flow and sound. I need to make another vid. without wind noise.
Very clean bike, thanks Dale Walker @ Holeshot
That looked fun!
Stanley Spencer Mtn. Rd. at bridge, small park (now you have to call the phone # on the sign and get permision to park there). take out under I85 bridge Willow Dr.
where did you put in and take out?
The mast may not be strong enough for planing. I do not go out in winds more than 25 mph. The sail is 55 sq ft. Perfect for 15 to 20 mph winds.
