I recently went on an 11-day trip to one of Japan's hidden gems: The "pocket-sized Japan" island, Sado! Just off the coast of Niigata, one of Japan's best kept secrets can be found. With a wonderful local population, and nature that looks like it was taken straight out of a Ghibli movie, Sado is an absolute must-visit! I had a wonderful time, and this video contains some of my footage and thoug...
My First Two Months Having a Startup in Japan | Sapporo Startup Visa Journey Takeaways

A long overdue summary of what my first two months in Japan have been like! A video where I rant extensively about how both my professional and personal life has been during the first 2-ish months of living in Sapporo, Japan on a startup visa. My article in collaboration with Startup City Sapporo: medium.com/@startupcitysapporo/meet-victor-at-tryp-com-building-up-traveltech-cluster-in-hokkaido-...
interesting to see your journey! keep up the good work! hoping to see more vids :)
Thank you so much, really appreciate the kind words! I'm fighting for my life to find time for making more videos, I promise more are on their way :)
what about funding requirements?
Hi! In my case, since what we were planning on establishing was a subsidiary company, we needed to provide proof of our company having 5M JPY available for the company :) So it depends a bit on your situation: If you tell them you want to self-fund the entire shebang, you need to be able to show that you have the necessary capital. If you plan on raising the money from investors, you need a fairly solid investment plan and roadmap. In general, they just need to know or feel certain that you, by the end of the startup visa, will have enough capital to transition into a Business Manager visa, which at the time of writing requires 5 million JPY ✌️
I'm currently in Kanagawa, and planning to apply to the Yokohama startup visa office.
Wishing you good luck, king! I can only recommend getting in touch with their startup visa department somehow first, to get a more personal introduction going, and get to hear a bit about what they're looking for in their applicants~
@@victorguramu Thanks for the advice! I have emailed them to see if they are willing to have a meeting. I am wondering if they prefer multiple founders vs solo founders. And did you apply alone or with a co-founder?
I imagine they'd view it as sort of a trade-off. Having an extra founder on board will in a lot of cases allow the company to grow faster, but it requires double the amount of paperwork visa-wise, and if both of you are targeting a Business Manager visa, it will also require double the upfront capital investment into the company (5M JPY per person), which is a lot of money to find within the startup visa timeframe. In general, I've mainly seen solo founders go at it, or people that have co-founders, but where only one founder is one the startup visa (this last scenario is very common). All of that being said, we do have a case in Hokkaido with two founders, and their journey hasn't had more or less headaches than us solo founders'~ There is also the option of one person being on the BM visa, and the other having a working visa sponsored by the new Japanese company, but it's a bit more of a visa puzzle to get to add up - I'd definitely discuss that with the startup visa program leader in the given prefecture :)
👍🏻 sounds good. May I ask, approximately how much money does the Hokkaido govt want to see the founder have, for a Startup visa? My product idea requires finding a Japanese manufacturer which will take some time
Hi! The main thing they care about, is your ability to transition to the Business Manager visa down the line, which has a 5M JPY capital investment requirement. So let's say that you on your startup visa application say that you'll be self-funding that money - in that case, they'd want to see evidence that you have that money available to you. You can also express that you plan on getting it through investment, or loans. Then their questions and validation process probably changes a bit. So what matters is very much your path to the 5M JPY that the Business Manager visa requires, and that you can at least to some extent prove that you'll have the money to put into your businesses, before it becomes time to transition your visa status :) They do also ask for an account statement, to check your ability to sustain yourself before you start getting a salary from your not-yet-incorporated Japanese company - I'm not sure how much money they're hoping to see on that check though, but since I got approved, it can't have been a whole lot 😅 I hope that somewhat answers your question - if not, please do ask me to elaborate 👏
I am from Nepal I am worked Japan as a cook 7 Year now i am in Nepal Can i apply Startup visa in Japan Necessary documents
Hi! That's a slightly trickier case, but if you want tonpursue a startup visa, first things first you'll need a business idea, an MVP of your product, and a financing plan that'll get you the 5M JPY before you need to transition to the business manager visa :) BM visas for e.g. a restaurant can be a bit tricky (at least that's what I've heard), but I would recommend talking to a visa lawyer to fully understand your options.
So pretty 🎉🎉🎉
OMG this is the most amazing video about sapporo ever. One must love a hangover.
Aww, thank you!! You should like move here or smth
@@victorguramu will have to, won't I! need to get some high schooler outfits.

Best adventure : going to Donki and trying to stay within budget
Haha, Donki shopping sprees are always a risky financial game 🥲
Amazing ❤
Thank you!
I'm attracted to the startup visa but I only own an associates degree with some university credit. So I'm not sure if it's even a good idea.
There's no doubt that whenever Japan evaluates new visa candidates, educational background does have quite a bit of influence. But if memory serves me right, it's not a requirement for the startup visa - so if you have a seed stage company, with an MVP, and a clear Japan-centered business and funding plan, I don't see any harm in reaching out to e.g. Startup Hokkaido, or one of the other prefecture's programs 👏 Worst they can say is no, but they might be able to give you some feedback or pointers about what you're missing to qualify ✌️
@@victorguramu That's good to hear. I'm not at that stage yet but I guess it can't hurt to reach out and ask them. Thanks!
Hello there, we are team of three people in a start-up, so we checked there should be 34k USD in our company account. Thus, what about their consideration time and extending the visa for more years. One of my team member is Japanese resident.
Hi! Really sorry about the response time, I've been crazy busy with work 🙇♂️ Just to preface my answer with an important disclaimer: I am NOT a visa lawyer, and I'd absolutely talk to e.g. Startup City Sapporo about the hard rules and regulations, before moving ahead with anything. So my understanding is: For the startup visa, you can apply as multiple people, and both of you can get the visa for the same project (your Japanese team member is of course a non-issue in this). The tricky part comes when you need to transition to the business manage visa: This will normally involve having 5.000.000 JPY worth of capital in your company. However, when needing 2 business manager visas, that number doubles to 10.000.000 JPY. So it is doable to have two founders with startup visas on the same project (I actually believe we have a case like that in Sapporo right now), but it multiplies the capital requirements when applying for the business manager visa transitioning. This is just my understanding of the system, and how I recall it being explained to me - please do check with a government employee to be 100% certain 👏
Hi, good information. How do you get money to live there? who pays you?
Hi! Glad you enjoyed it :) I'm living of my salary from my startup, so exactly the same situation as when I was living in Denmark ✌️ There are some government subsidies you can apply for as an international founder, but they're more geared towards helping with moving expenses :)
@@victorguramu thank you :)
@@victorguramuwhich subsidies did you apply for
@freyafoxmusic So sorry about the response time! Did not see you comment here 😥 I applied for and got the Softlanding Subsidy. It's only available if you live in Sapporo city, and covers up to 50% of your moving expenses. You can read more here: global-startup-city-sapporo.com/
I believe it! I'm getting into Software Engineering this year, already super curious in regards to the API integration. So many features in here, it's wilddd
Yoo, that's awesome! Welcome to one of the most simultaneously fun and frustrating fields out there! 😁
No shortage of appreciation for Also Sprach Brooks. Catherine is top 3 favorite ATLUS games.
Haha, fantastic - I did not expect for anyone to recognize the track (to be fair, I didn't expect anyone to watch the video in the first place, haha). Absolutely loved Catherine. Persona 5 was a massive influence in terms of me ending up moving to Japan, so I'm right there with you in the ATLUS fandom :)
I checked out your teams' product, I've honestly never seen a system like this before. Multi-city itinerary is a game changer. I love having all of the destination info in one place. Will be spreading the word!
Thank you so much! That means the world to me (and the rest of the team)! 👏
I watched your original video about getting the visa, glad to see that you're already winning out in Japan! I have many questions about that startup life, but I'll stay tuned because I'm sure they'll be more insightful videos coming 💪
Cheers man, I appreciate you popping back in to see the second video as well! :) I have a few more videos planned at least! Otherwise, please do ask - if I can get anyone going down the entrepreneurship path, I'm always very happy to do so :)
Guramu~ very pro fotoage-goodnight.
Cheers man, appreciate it! Don't know about the pro footage part though, haha - for now, it's just me and my phone, in my share house room 😅

Congratulations on getting your visa! I'm a Rapper and Content creator who lives in Osaka and raps in Japanese and English. I was hoping to get the visa as well but I just had a question if that's okay with you! Do you have to have 50 million yen at the time of application or do you have to prove you can make that much before the time of your start-up visa is up? good luck on your Japanese learning journey!
Hey man! That's really cool, glad to hear that you're considering the startup visa route as well! So I'm obviously not a visa lawyer by any stretch of the imagination, but my understanding of it is, that the transition from Startup Visa to Business Manager Visa, will require either a GK or KK company, and 5M JPY in the company account. When applying for the visa, I had to hand in a financial projection for how this money would be acquired, e.g., through investment, income, self funding. Thank you! And good luck on your journey with the visa!
@@victorguramu Thank you so much for the speedy reply! Really made me more hopeful of actually getting it!
がんばって!I'm not sure what kind of programs Osaka has in place, but at least Sapporo provides a ton of support for the application process, so it could maybe be worth it to get in touch with your local government!

looking forward to see more vids about your startup journey in Japan.
