Thanks for this great video! i am so excited to make mine. I heard that garlic tincture can help with earaches. Putting some on a cotton ball and placing it in the ear. Would you recommend this?
I actually just read that it might be better to use garlic oil rather than a garlic tincture... that way, the oil will buffer the heat in the garlic.
Yes, I was actually just going to say that I would not put a garlic tincture in my ear. Ear infections are often caused secondary to a respiratory infection so it would benefit the ear to take the garlic tincture by mouth to fight the infection that way. Many people use a garlic oil for ear pain but make sure to do your research because it can't be made like a standard oil infusion that sits on heat for 6 weeks, needs to be a quick infusion and refrigerated for safety.

Thanks for this video! I really wait for the next episodes on your thyroid, *castor oil packs* , Ultrasound scan and so on. Just a couple of things: 1) Sure! 24h urine iodine test is much better than blood test (and spot urine test). However it would need about 7-10 24h tests just to measure the iodine with a 20% precision. This is because one sample of 24h iodine urine test usually does not represent our diet/supplementation day-by-day, which typically changes over time. I know, 7-10 tests are not practical but - hey- that's statistics (and there are at least a couple of clinical studies about that). Said in another words, a single 24h iodine urine test could be not precise enough in a varied day-to-day diet unless the iodine salt is enough to fix it, so it is that critical constant able to provide the 150 ug/day in the adult. 2) Weighting the 24h urine iodine test with urine creatinine would improve the reliability: this is because -- essentially - you are pondering over the quantity of liquids/water over the 24hrs (some day you could drink more or eat more fruits, so more water/urine volume). There are some labs that measure both at the same time and provide the result as the ratio ug/g of creatinine (given the urine creatinine g/L and 24h urine Iodine ug/L). In other terms, the result is provided as Iodine for 1 gram of creatinine on top of pure iodine over the 24hrs. Hope this helps. 3) Kelp leaves supplementation, with their tremendous iodine content, could be dangerous for a thyroid that usually does not receive an adequate quantity of iodine, causing an opposite imbalance in the current thyroid blood tests. A gradual approach could be much safer-as you did, after all. (This is one of the reasons kelp is sometimes not included in the list of foods suggested for iodine supplementation.)
This is fabulous information, thank you so much for taking the time to articulate it, this will be very helpful to comment readers! I did have two 24 hour urine tests taken only 30 days apart and the second one was 253.5 so nearly the same as the first, it's likely that my diet is relatively consistent. I'll be quite curious to see my next results this coming January to see if that bears out. One of the reasons I've never recommended oral iodine tincture as supplementation is due to the risk of thyroid injury. Too much of a good thing can definitely be a bad thing.
You are spot on to say advocate for yourself. You know when your body is out of sync. We must be in charge of our own health.
Yes Sir!
Do you take just the leaves to add for a salad or the stems too? I have some thats flowering and wondered if the flowers are good to eat too?
Great question! Stems, leaves and flowers are all edible! If it's flowering though, just watch out for the seed pods 😂 those will be uncomfortably crunchy. The seeds are super tiny too, they look a bit like poppy seeds.
@@HappyAppleCoreHomestead thank you! I have SO much growing, I may make a tincture too. I’m in zone 8a and it grows in abundance here. Thank you for sharing this!
@@shae6336 You're welcome! Purslane tincture is AMAZING! I'm glad you commented today because I actually need to dry some more and now is the time to get out there and get it if I want it this year! So thank YOU for the reminder! :)
I appreciate all your information on the iodine and sodium deficiency. I have had low sodium for years but have never found a doctor that was concerned. How did you find a doctor that would go the extra step to investigate? I have tried a naturapathic doctor but not been satisfied. Thank you in advance for the advice.
My doctor is an Integrative Medicine Physician. By that, I mean she's an MD but her focus is also on the mind, body and spirit as a whole. She doesn't just try to mask symptoms but rather get to the root cause. I would start by looking for a local Integrative Physician and see if that's a better fit than a naturopath. I hope you find a great one!
I just jarred my first ginger tincture last night, and it's also my very first tincture I've made. #Uno! Question: Must we use 100 proof? Other videos I've watched show that 80 proof Vodka is sufficient. What do you think? Just a note...I've heard others say that only amber bottles should be used bc other colored bottles like blue or green don't have the same protection (blockage of light) that amber-colored bottles do. Two more questions - How many 1 oz bottles of tincture can you get out of the quart of tincture you made in this video? And do we not have to "burp" the jar when making tinctures? I'm guessing that's just for fermenting. Thanks for sharing how to make ginger tincture and how it helps our health. I'll be checking out your other videos. Thanks! God's blessings! Best!
Hi! You're correct that many herbalists say 80 proof vodka is totally fine and they are probably correct. I only use 100 proof vodka for my fresh herb tinctures to ensure that the water content of the herbs doesn't over dilute the tincture. There are some roots and resins that require a higher proof. For ginger and most other high water content herbs I exclusively use 100 proof vodka. I don't think you need to worry too much about using 80 proof for your personal use tinctures especially if you only fill the jar halfway with herbs and fill the jar completely with vodka. It's not necessary to burp the tincture jars but if for any reason the level of vodka drops below the top of the herbs make sure to top it off. I use the amber colored jars for storage because that's the easiest and least expensive option for me. I also store them in a dark closet. When I'm making them however, I use clear mason jars and also store them in a dark closet. Any colored jar that protects against light is a good option for long term storage so I would say get the colored jars that make you happy but still store them in the dark. As far as how many 1 ounce bottles you can get from a ginger tincture, that really depends on how much ginger is in the jar. Ginger is super dense so if you fill a quart jar halfway with chopped ginger and all the way to the tippy top of the jar with vodka you can expect to get between 16 and 18 ounces of finished tincture. I know you didn't ask but here's an extra tip; when you finish your tincture and are getting ready to store it for use I recommend buying a 32 ounce dark colored jar with a phenolic lid to keep it in. This will prevent the alcohol from evaporating before you get the chance to use all the product. Of course, if you're going to use it all right away within 3 months you can fill your 1 ounce jars and skip my suggestion. I store all my tinctures in these bottles and just fill 1 or 2 ounce bottles as orders come in or if I need some in my medicine cabinet. I hope this information is helpful! Please let me know if you have any other questions and congratulations on taking your healthcare into your own hands!
Is that salt bleached?
Great question, yikes I sure hope not!!!! It's Morton Iodized Sea Salt.
You guys!!!! The update is FINALLY here. Find out why I thought I had an iodine deficiency and how I cured it in under a year! ❤️ ua-cam.com/video/AXP83X_mIAI/v-deo.html
Lemme guess? Seaweed? Edit: Ahha! I was right lol. I LOVE nori and kelp. I actually started harvesting my own bull kelp leaves and drying them along with other seaweeds 😊
That yes and Iodized salt. Couldn't be more simple (for me).
Yes! You're spot on! So amazing that you're harvesting your own!!!! Even though I shared all this information in the comments of my last iodine video, lots of folks were asking for an update so here I am 😂!

Oh my goodness you're totally right!!!! Just went out and rubbed a bit of the plant and it smells so much like oregano!!!! And maybe a little bit like basil too!
Omg it worked lol now I can eat my peaches
Yay!!! Enjoy those delicious peaches! ❤️
It is inaccurate, doesn't relate in many cases. In mine, it is the same before taking iodine, and after, for me and many others.
As I always say the most accurate iodine testing is a 24 hour urine test or a blood test.
@@HappyAppleCoreHomestead Which apparently is next for me :O)
That's what I did too, it's way more accurate and can really hone in on what action needs to be taken if anything. For me, adding iodized salt and seaweed got my levels back up in months. But others have needed to take a concentrated tincture.
@@HappyAppleCoreHomestead 2 years carnivore...Medicare starts in 1 month, then I can see a real doctor...of MY choice...that I don't have to teach about carnivore, hopefully :O)

You're welcome!
It's been a year. Can we get an update?
Absolutely! I've been grieving a family loss this week but it's definitely on my radar to do an update on this one for you all!
@@HappyAppleCoreHomestead I've had everyone in my family do this test, and the students in my class all wanted to do it last week as well.
What kind of results did you all get? I'm planning to dive into my medical records this week and do an in depth video update, not only on how I healed from my iodine deficiency with dates and what I used but I will be lumping in my thyroid nodules too and how I healed those.
@@HappyAppleCoreHomestead Mine disappeared within a few hours, but everyone in my family and the students in my class all varied. Interestingly, a few students who were consuming high iodine foods had their iodine patches last almost the entire 24 hour period. There definitely was a correlation.
What a fun and safe experiment to do with your students! Thank you for telling me how it went!

Can you please clarify the difference between mugwort and wormwood? Huge gratitude to you if you can. I'm looking for all differences including smell and what roots look like. Hugs and love. ❤
Such a great question! For one they have different colored flowers usually. Although it's possible for mugwort and wormwood to both have yellow flowers it's just the wormwood that is always yellow, whereas mugwort flowers are white (but can be red and occasionally yellow). Most significantly wormwood makes Absinthe! Wormwood grows much smaller, three feet tall as opposed to 6 feet tall and wormwood is silver on both sides of the leaf whereas mugwort is silver on the bottom and green on the top. They are both highly medicinal, beautiful herbs!
Lugols iodine is taken orally- good stuff
Definitely been hearing that in the comments!
This seemed to be a more difficult way to make hash browns. No one else is baking them first.
It's my recipe and it makes the most perfect and beautiful hash browns without preservatives and browning you will get with grated raw potatoes that you try to freeze for later. If it's a hassle I'm confident you will find an easier way to do it, that's the beauty of UA-cam but I promise you won't be disappointed with my recipe if you try it this way most especially if you plan to batch cook them and freeze for later use.

I thought the stalks would be much thicker. My reason is in John 19:29 A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant , and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. Are there different size plants.
Oh they get HUGE when planted in the ground. In a pot they only grow so big.

Bonjour.. Thanks for sharing.. Every how often do you retest.. Thanks.. Merci
Hi! You're welcome! I retest once a year now but when I had the iodine and sodium deficiency at the time I filmed this video, I tested every 6 months.
@@HappyAppleCoreHomestead ok.. Cool.. Merci
@@HappyAppleCoreHomestead bonjour.. How did you find out the you where low on sodium.. Merci
When I first noticed the growth on my thyroid I went to see my doctor and requested a full panel of blood tests including vitamins and minerals. My sodium was extremely low as was my B-12. It took a few more months before I was able to convince my doctor to order the iodine test because he was under the mistaken impression that modern day people don't have iodine deficiencies anymore. Needless to say I fired that doctor and now have a new one that takes my health seriously!
@@HappyAppleCoreHomestead yes... I understand.. Merci
How much sugar did you use for a 5 gallon?
16 1/4 cups sugar for a 5 gallon batch. The complete recipe is down in the description box too if you want to check out the ingredients and measurements, just multiply for how many gallons you want to make 😊
Hopefully you are doing well now and fine a new alternative to speed up your recovery!! Thank you for your video it was very informative. I am right now reading a book by Dr. David Brownstein, M.D. called "Iodine why you need it, why you can't live without it". This Dr had the same issue and has found a way to increase the iodine/iodide deficiency and the treatment. Hope you and everyone watching your video get this book. God bless you all!! 😊
Thank you so much! And yes I'm much better now! Thank you for the book recommendation!!!
So no spice at all? Just straight pears?

I don’t have a processor to separate the pulp from the juice, like you have. Can you tell me the best way to do this? I am having trouble finding the Pomona pectin you suggest. The only place I can find it is online and I really don’t have time to wait for it to be delivered. The sure-gel that every store seems to have, shows how much to use per quart of fruit, rather than per cup. Would I measure that type of pectin in the same way that you measure the Pomona pectin? Thank you so much.
@JillyRN1 Hi! I wouldn't use the Pomona directions for sure gel. Their directions on the box should work perfectly. Are you using sugar or honey for your recipe?
@@HappyAppleCoreHomestead the Sure Jell pectin box says to use one box for 2 quarts of fruit. I’m using the juice from the fruit so how do I know how much that is? And yes, I am using sugar. I have been to every single store that sells canning supplies within a 15 mile radius and I cannot find the pomobb no a pectin, to save my life. I have no clue how much of this to use. Ugh!
@JillyRN1 Great question! Okay so your juice equals the fruit, what you'll want to do is measure how many cups of juice you have then add one box of sure gel for every 8 cups of juice. And I'm glad you're using sugar because honey doesn't set up as well with sure gel. Is this helpful? Please let me know if you need any clarification or have any other questions!

Thank you. I just discovered it in my backyard. I tasted a leaf and felt that it numbed my mouth a bit. No buggy, but I wonder if that’s normal. I liked the lemonish taste. It was a bit salty too. Is that normal? I want to make a tincture with it.
I would be cautious with the numbing, although it has pain reducing qualities, I would be concerned you may have an allergy. Did it make your mouth sore at all? From my experience it doesn't numb my mouth when I eat it. And yes that flavor is normal, it's chalk full of vitamins and minerals. 😊
