Mk2 Escort Rally Prep Part 6, bracing the shell, cut a post off, starting to remove the floor pan.
Part 6 of my journey into Rallying, focussing on the preparation of my Mk2 Escort. This car was bought as ‘mint’ and ‘ready to win your class’, which by all accounts is stretching things a little bit!
In this video I brace the shell best I can see, so I can start to cut things out. I get the door post out, some of the floor pan gone and a few more attachments for my jig too.
As always appreciate you watching, if you can like and subscribe that would be great thanks.
Cheers

I made a chassis build jig for my mk2 Escort and other classic cars
Переглядів 2,9 тис.12 годин тому
After watching lots of videos I realised I would need some sort of jig to build my projects up on. I had originally planned to make a jig for my mini build, however with my Escort taking a turn for the worse I had to get something sorted asap! So here it is, I’m no fabrication expert Im just learning about it all, so any tips bang them in my comments. Little cameo from my 7 year old son too par...

Mk2 Escort Rally Car Prep. Front wing removal and broken dreams
Переглядів 88221 день тому
Join me on my journey into Rallying. I recently bought this mk2 Escort rally car which should of been good to ‘win my class’! However its quickly looking to become a bit of a horror story, starting off here with the removal of the front wing to find its a bit of a basket case. It seems I have my work cut out getting it something like! Appreciate any tips and advice in the comments, Escorts are ...

Good Luck you will need it 😮😂
@@lynjames4306 yes feeling that way 🤣 maybe need a bit more than good luck but I’ll do my best.
Usher engineering 179, have a great escort build might be a good help .
@@GabrielOLeary I’ve watched a fair bit of that, definitely some of the better videos I’ve watched. Very cool he got his daughter upto speed on the fabrication too, I’ve run it by my two daughters too but they’re not interested 🤣
Another video, is odd autos custom or classic, they more or less had to replace every panel. Wish you all the best on your build.
@ thanks mate I’ll look for that one not sure if I’ve seen it.
Hi, have a look at this channel MJG GRITS he is doing a similar restoration on mk1 escort 😀👍
@@rsmad9406 thanks bud will take a look

I would of liked all the bracing done before you started cutting anything
@@andrewharrison4558 I think it’s ok, but yes prob should of got that straight in before a post off but I did make a post that bolts to jig and a post so I think I have good references, guess I’ll find out soon. Cheers 🍻
If you are replacing both A posts & possibly centre chassis at the same time, you might want to consider concentrating on one side section floor etc unless you have 100% confidence in your jig holding the shell true
@@ericd1524 think that’s sort of what I’m planning. Been adding to the jig today to line the front end up nicely but I think I’ll add some more supports to rear end next.
The chassis rail is in 3 pieces front, middle and back,
@@clivefowler1932 yes think I’m gonna end up doing the front sections tbh. Just want a fresh finish I know is good. But we’ll see back on it today. Cheers
Just found this channel, great build, looking forward to the next instalment... nice workshop too!
@@TomMates thank you 🙏
Great workshop
@@davehussey6021 thanks Dave. It was originally a horse stables and far from what it is now. It’s taken me 7 years to get it like this and a lot of graft. Cheers for watching
Good progress now the fun begins
What is the background noise?
@@bobbythompson3544 hello buddy, it’s my dehumidifier going. I’m trying to keep it dry as possible while it’s bare metal. It’s pretty rowdy though will have to try and remember to turn it off while recording. Cheers 🍻
Proper that is mate 👍
@@mark2too cheers bud
Brilliant
@@davehussey6021 thanks Dave
Where I would start is by replacing every panel with 6R4 ones
lol one day maybe a 6r4 build who knows. I’ll get you round on the brews if that happens 😂
looks like a rabbit hole with the metalwork of the car, might as well make new floors its only some sheet metal
Think that’s where I’m gonna start. Brace it up and cut floor out I think is the only way. Cheers
Rebuild that N/s A post before removing floor. And find more points to bolt your gig to.
Yeah that thought did cross my mind last night, tidy that up then cut floor out might be better start. Cheers
All depends on what you want to achieve. The reality is that a competition car won’t be perfect. The most important thing is that it’s safe. Always remember that you could quite easily damage it on the first rally, don’t make it so perfect that you’re afraid to drive it at competitive pace. I’m into a Peugeot 205 rally car rebuild at the moment, I have to keep telling myself that it’s a competition car not a concourse restoration as I would end up replacing every panel!
Yeah I agree. I mean it’s bit mad spend all this time and money to potentially destroy it 😂 but it’s worth it although I’d rather not be rebuilding it in a rush 🤞 I just want it nice and clean so I can keep on top of it. I do plan on going hard in it once we get going, so any problems I chassis I want to be able to spot, cracks etc etc cheers for input hope your Pug goes well
Loving the video's so far, nice to see someone with such enthusiasm. The shell looks like it's in good order apart from the normal quick-fix patches people seem to do with them. I would be getting those sill skids off just for peace of mind, you never know what might be hiding underneath. I'm in the same boat with my mk2 do it once and do it right. Keep up the videos.👍
@@JTGrp4 thanks for the support bud i try to stay positive even though im gutted as i wanted to get going in it asap. But im enjoying the process and doing the videos is cool too. Good luck with your build too
looks like a nut and bolt job for you chap. looking at your workshop you are fully capable of putting this car back right again. lots of long hours .
@@martinjones7097 yep lots of long hours coming up. I’m trying to get my jig built to mount it nicely so I don’t run into any issues. It’s far more than I’ve taken on before fabrication wise but I’m committed to learning and doing a good job. I hope. 🤞
fair play to you that is a big job it took me years to do my Mk 1 type 49 . but good content .
@@martinjones7097 thank you mate
Bloody hell, merry Christmas
I was involved in Landrovers for years and didnt realise the knowledge ide built up. Fresh to Escorts and trying to sift out tge BS from the lads who know what they are on about.

Escorts and Sabbeth. What a win.
Enjoying the vid updates, theres a fair bit of work there for you, opening a can of worms, but its all fixable, been there afew times, have you thought of putting a turret to top mount cage in when your done,?
@@taffymk1244 I have a full weld in safety devices job going back in. It was a bolt in before
With reference to moisture with in the air might be worth hiring an industrial dehumidifier to help
@@RS-Andyg thanks bud great minds must think alike as I’ve got one on the go! Thank you 🙏

That's escalated.
@@darrenfrench5544 gathered momentum and became difficult to stop ….. after blasting definitely the right choice though.
i've just gone deaf you mic is set to low the music blast's out when it comes on
Ah sorry dude the old editing of videos is new to me so I’ll try keep eye on that 👍
@@SmokingJoesRacing Have a look at some of the recent Salvage Rebuilds stuff, they realised that people were put off by the music and now their videos just work so much better with voice over alone
@ cheers bud much appreciated. I didn’t put any music to the last video I’ll keep an eye on it. Appreciate it
That a proper man's car love it
The splash panel would've originally been part of the bulkhead panel and was joined to the a post with spot welds. The way yours was fitted is a normal replacement panel fitment. I'd have left it on and just repaired the bottom of it and the sill end.
Possibly buddy I’d rather the bulkhead / a pillar side was tied into the door post properly though for the strength. Cheers 🍻
The bit you have left on the a post is part of the wing as is the bit by the headlight. The lower spoiler on the front should've been detected from the bottom of the wing they're normally alloy. Google some pics of these panels and you'll see
@@darrenfrench5544 yes I sussed that but the bulk head side repair panel had been seam welded to the wing inner I left on in the video here so I don’t think it was coming off with wing without some serious effort! Ill put next vid up soon. The bulkhead repair wasn’t even welded to door post 😞 thanks for tip appreciate it
It's scrap. Time for a 6R4.
Ha one day maybe mate.
Such a shame to find that amount of rot on such a hi spec car, luckily it’s only metal and can be fixed properly with all panels available. There’s plenty of specialist companies available who can help you out if needed. Good luck with the channel and I’ve subscribed 👍
Thank you. Yes I’m pretty gutted, the car on the surface is good. I didn’t think for one minute someone would be fitting millington engines and sequential gearboxes into anything but a pretty tip top shell. I’m kicking myself for not checking it over properly but you live and learn.
