An American fighter pilot from Texas escapes from a Japanese prison camp during World War Two!
Lieutenant William Dyess was born and raised in Albany, Texas which is almost an hour’s drive from Abilene. He was the leader of the 21st Pursuit Squadron assigned in the Philippines during the Second World War!
He was also one of the 10 Americans to ever escape a Japanese prison camp in history! This is well-documented in the non-fiction book by John Lukacs titled “Escape From Davao”.
Another notable figure from the 21st Pursuit Squadron was Ray Hunt who was one of their flight mechanics. Unlike Dyess, he chose not to surrender and instead became a guerrilla officer in Luzon which is in Northern Philippines. He eventually became a pilot during the Korean War.
