Metric 4.0 Biodiversity Net Gain calculation tool - CPD Zoom recording
A recording of our Metric 4.0 BNG calculation tool CPD talk, held on the 17th of October 2023.
This recording is taken from our 30-minute lunchtime talk discussing the Biodiversity Net Gain calculation tool, Metric 4.0, developed by DEFRA and Natural England. Following on from our previous CPD talk, Introduction to Biodiversity Net Gain legislation, this talk features a worked through example of how Biodiversity Net Gain can be achieved by replacing a degraded conventional sea wall with one that features Integrated Greening of Grey Infrastructure (IGGI).
The PowerPoint presentation was collated with information provided by Natural England, so many thanks to them for their help.
We hope this provides you with a good explanation of how the new Metric 4.0 calculation tool can be used. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us using the links below.

    There is a case here where the planning authority, or rather the council ecologist, is slapping a £30,000+vat developer tax (off-site habitat unit payment) on a project for 1 home on what is currently garden land. Yes, 30k for just 1 home for an aspiring self-builder. The ecologist is using the BNG legislation to push his agenda and, in my opinion, doing so punitively. The garden had a few saplings on it that have been removed, which I think he took personal issue with, but people are entitled to clear their gardens! There are so many questions this issue raises, not least the question of when the biodiversity rating of a site "resets". For example, if a homeowner had visions in 10 years time to build a house in their garden for an elderly relative or for themselves to live in then, if they were savvy, they would effectively reduce or inhibit the biodiversity on the garden land over that period to ensure that the biodiversity "rating" of the garden site would be low. The legislation is an utter joke. I'd be happy to be convinced otherwise, but nobody I've spoken to thinks it's fit for purpose. Apart from the large ecology firms and off-site habitat unit providers counting the cash!!

    can you please explain why the measurement and the determination of transducer's draft is important in bathymetric survey??thank you in advance

    • @ExoEnvironmental
      @ExoEnvironmental 3 роки тому

      Hello, thank you for your question! It is important to know the draft of the transducer if you are using a tide gauge to correctly georeference the depths measured to the relevant datum. In our case, the tide correction is done with RTK GNSS, so the draft itself is not important but the offset between the GNSS antenna and the transducer is used instead. I hope this helps!

    thank you for the video i have a little problem, with reducing the soundings to a datum..... LAT, MHWL, MLWL, MSL, MTL.... and how to do you merge levels from a tidal benchmark, to a tide gauge and use such data to reduce soundings... thanks for your help, if there is a contact person, I will love to discuss more on this. I have a B.Sc in Geoinformatics and Surveying, and I have a considerable amount of experience in bathymetric survey

    • @ExoEnvironmental
      @ExoEnvironmental 4 роки тому

      We use software called Teledyne PDS which handles all of the processing in-software. We also use RTK GNSS throughout the survey to correct for the tide as that is much more accurate than using tidal gauges. The chart datum (typically LAT) can usually be obtained from navigational charts or the local authority depending on location. The Z correction is then applied on the measured GNSS data. Hope this is helpful!

    • @ExoEnvironmental
      @ExoEnvironmental 4 роки тому

      @@dhanushjayakumar537 No worries. In one of our recent surveys in a shallow water environment (<3m depth), we covered the area with an average number of 14 pings per square meter. This was done with a single beam system so this is the number of measurements directly below the survey lines. Those are spaced very closely together (between 5-15 metres), depending on the topography of the bed to allow for accurate interpolation.

    does bathymetry need levelling and traverse? if yes how to do that

    • @ExoEnvironmental
      @ExoEnvironmental 4 роки тому

      Hello! Good question! There are many controls to ensure the accuracy of the survey. Unlike ground based measurements which remain positionally fixed, positional accuracy on the water is somewhat difficult to pinpoint to such a level of accuracy, especially where there are tidal influences. In order to achieve the best quality data, RTK GNSS positioning system is used with a reference base station on a known point. This provides cm accuracy throughout the survey at sub second intervals to correct for things like tide or heave. The other aspects of measuring the depth have a lower accuracy overall (the sonar) and are therefore the limiting factor. In those aspects of the bathymetric system, accurate calibration of the echosounder and measurement of the sound velocity in the water both before and after the survey are essential. Lastly, the survey is performed with overlapping survey lines to allow for comparison of the final calculated depth at locations where the lines intersect. This allows positional quality control across the entire area, not too dissimilar to a levelling traverse procedure. Hope that helps!

    Hi, I was wondering how do you guys do a survey in a shallow water? are u guys still using a sounding pole?

    • @ExoEnvironmental
      @ExoEnvironmental 4 роки тому

      Hello! The echosounder is able to function correctly up to a depth of 50cm. Any shallower water and the echosounder will actually pick up the internal casing, and subsequently produce too many errors. In a tidal environment shallow water is surveyed at low tide with drone photogrammetry. Whilst shallow static water bodies will have to be surveyed by topographic survey pole. All three types of data collection can be merged in our software, to create one chart, map or model.

    When doing bathymetry measurements, do you use some kind of IMU to measure roll on the boat or is it assumed that the position of the boat is flat at all times?

    • @ExoEnvironmental
      @ExoEnvironmental 5 років тому

      Hi! If you want to achieve the highest order of accuracy then yes you should use a dedicated motion sensor, however in shallow waters and calm conditions the effective error of not using one is negligible. The positioning system (GPS) also corrects for tide and the heave of the boat. Hope that helps!
