I love sailboats, particularly wooden sailboats. My favourite designs are the Norwalk Islands Sharpies (NIS), but I am also a fan of Michael Storer's Goat Island Skiffs, Oz Geese, Nigel Irens' designs, Ian Oughtred, Dudley Dix’s Cape Henry, Bay Raiders and many more.

I'm looking for videos on this type of grements that show the execution of maneuvers, especially in strong winds, for sail reduction. I can't find any. Do you have any? Please! 🟥 Je cherche des videos sur ce type de grements qui montrent l'exécution des manoeuvres, en particulier lors de fort vent, pour la réduction de la voile. Je ne trouve pas. En auriez vous ? s il vous plait !
I’m sorry but I am not aware of any videos that exist which show the reduction of sail in strong winds for this type of rig
@@Nispete merci !!!
I thought a yawl is when the mizzen mast is behind the rudder and if the mizzen mast is in front of the rudder then it's a ketch rig. That has been my understanding of what makes a yawl different to a ketch.
There isn’t only one rule / definition of what makes a yawl versus a ketch, but I feel you’re right in the general sense. My own interpretation would be that in a yawl the mizzen is aft of the tiller/ wheel (not the rudder itself) - which it is here. It is difficult for the mizzen to be aft of the rudder when the rudder is transom hung. In any case, for the Norwalk Islands Sharpies there are two versions of the 18 footer. One like this with the mizzen mounted right at the transom - called the cat yawl; and one with the mizzen mounted in the cockpit forward of the tiller - the cat ketch.
I seen these boats advertised with plans on the NIS website...it isn't clear if it's s set a set of plans or a booklet ..I wrote to them many times and asked if a home builder could build this boat with the " booklet'...didn't get a reply so their customer service is naff ..shame as it's a beautiful boat but the snobbery of the designer puts me off building one ..yes he designed the Lazer dinghy also and maybe has a right to be but shocked to see Iain Oughterad advertised on the same site ..working boats being his theme .. his boats are gone down in my expectations too..Stray moggy boat company or something ...hard to believe they could design a boat do practical and intelligent..yet be so boorish. Thanks for the video
Thanks for your comments. Sorry you haven’t had responses to your questions and on that basis you have a negative view towards Norwalk Islands Sharpies. As you say they’re beautiful and very practical boats with a growing following worldwide. The business you contacted is small and from time to time people go through challenges in life such as health and ageing and other things so it may be a factor here. I would not take it as snobbery or anything against you. I would be willing to approach the owner of the business and highlight you’re seeking some response if you would like to share your email address with me? Would that help? Also just to be clear the designer was Bruce Kirby, but sadly he passed away several years ago. Nisboats (now called Straydog Boatworks) is run by Robert Ayliffe who is a worldwide authority on the NIS design and a highly experienced sailor and builder. He is / was supported and authorized by Mr Kirby to handle kit and plans sales globally and has done so for at least 10-15 years. Similarly Iain Oughtred being originally from Australia and I believe connected with Robert has agreed to have his designs supported in a similar way. The NIS design is a relatively straightforward boat to build by someone with limited experience - particularly in the kit form which comes with an ingenious jig which allows the bulkheads and rest of the hull to be assembled properly aligned and with all the spacing accurate. I am building a NIS 18 kit currently and have no previous boat building experience apart from building a small dinghy with my father as a child. There’s an active group of owners globally and a small but growing group on fb if you would like to learn more
Thanks Peter. Those Sharpies are an interesting boat. Just a tip, flip your phone on it’s side when filming. Landscape orientation is better for viewing.
Thanks for the reminder , Josh. I need to check the video editor I used as I think it offered me choices re landscape or portrait orientation. I did actually film a lot of it in landscape…..
How do you sail dead downwind on a cat ketch? Both sails the same side with preventers?
Simon, yeah it’s possible to have both main and mizzen on the same side (haven’t generally seen a sharpie with preventers though), or quite often they will sail wing and wing with mizzen and main on opposite sides
Interesting design.
Easy mast laydown. Impressive! Are that tabernacles really strong enough to hold the mast in a strong puff when forgot to reef? I think the mast is a long lever and the tabernacle relativly short…
Yes the tabernacles are extremely strong- and there is a connected post beneath the deck which extends down to the keelson in the bow. The latest boats now have carbon fibre tabernacles instead of the alloy ones on this boat. Absolutely no problem. Another NIS 23 Charlie Fisher with the same set up crossed Bass Strait twice and handled 60knot winds and massive waves. Also don’t forget the masts are freestanding and will bend at the top in strong gusts to relieve some pressure
@@Nispete That sounds really great. Are the carbon tabernacles used at the bigger NIS like the 31 too?
S D yes they can be fitted on all sizes of NIS. I understand there’s a NIS 35 launched last year in Australia that has them fitted too.
@@Nispete i hope there will be a video or blog about that boat. Must be a joy to sail...
I’m not sure if that NIS 35 (now all NISs are named according to their length in metres so this is a NIS 10.5) is sailing yet. There’s an article about it in the Australasian Amateur Boatbuilder magazine (#101, Apr/May/Jun 2018). In that it was launched without the masts fitted. The builder suffered a stroke soon afterwards and has been recovering.
Is not a corsaire but is amusquadet
Is she more lee helm or weather helm?
the advantage of the ketch/yawl rig is you can trim the weather helm out
Depends on sail set and rudder set up mostly, with all of the range.
oversheeting is the biggest sailing problem with these ships.
Thats impressive.
Beautiful boat but she heels very much, wouldn ´t it be better to reef earlier? How is her behavior in coastal waters or offshore with more wind and higher waves?
This same boat was sailed to Tasmania from the mainland
Always good to see an NIS sailing well in a stiff breeze. Looks like fun. My wife and I have been sailing Mudlark our NIS 31 for seventeen years. At the moment we are putting on a new rub rail and toe rail and painting the deck with awlgrip. I have never grown weary of sailing these wonderful boats. Cheers.
Hello John, hope you're well and still getting out on Mudlark. All the best to you. Pete
Some body has read to much Arthur Ransome.
The sharpie hull is initially very tender. At rest one has to be careful in boarding the boat from a dock and warn anyone boarding about the "tipping". However when sailing the boat is stable, rock steady through puffs and lulls. She leans over until her chine steadies her and there she stays. The sharpie is the most stable of all small trailable boats of her size (ie 6 to 8 m) with none of the sawing over and back when puffs hit. In light conditions she is a real flier belying her size and sail area Rob, Sharpie 23 owner and experienced small yacht sailor.
I sent for study plans of the Norwalk Islands Sharpies back in the early 90's, when I thought about building one. It was immediately obvious, when looking at the lines, that the boat's hull form would have very low initial stability... and that stability would not increase much until a very great angle of heel. These are absurdly skinny at the bottom, that is... and then the topsides become buoyant much higher up. It is interesting to see all these videos of them in action, checking back in on these boats. My fears almost 25 years are clearly well founded, when you see how "tippy" they are, and how narrow when seen on end, and how far over they heel in light breezes. I am surprised the designs were not fixed/modified, long ago, to a more proper, stable design. There is always that yin/yang question of which is better: More initial, or more healing, stability... of course. Some say you should not have a large amount of initial stability, and hold more in reserve. I get that. But even the latter design philosophy should start with a hull form far more initially stable than these. NIS's only superficially resemble sharpies in concept, while missing the positive design elements of sharpies... which usually have a wide rocker bottom. The closest hull form I've seen to the NIS's would be a dory... but dories were intended as work boats, to be loaded with fish quickly, to submerge their skinny bottoms... NIS cruisers are not so designed... these are light cruising boats, not meant to be loaded down, so they will always remain in an unstable state.
(you may wish to join the nis forum to get other opinions from owners etc - groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/nisboats ) I have sailed both the ketch and now the yawl. the uncluttered cockpit of the yawl is great - makes it feel like a bigger boat. sails very nicely and well balanced. slight downsides are the extra "clutter" around the transom - the outboard, rudder, bumkin, etc all competing for space
She looks pretty smart Gav. You've done an incredible job and now it's time to enjoy the fruits of your labour.
So quick and seems easy to get those masts ready to sail. Enjoy her for decades!!!
thanks, BigFiveJack, yes it's a good set up for quick rigging and more time on the water. One of the benefits of the tabernacles is that the sails stay on the booms when the masts are folded.
Very impressive! Within how many degrees of the wind can you get with this rig?
Hi BigFiveJack, I have spoken with the owner of Route 66 who reports that she can sail upwind pretty much as close as any comparable boat with a sloop rig - i.e. an estimated approx 45 deg . I have heard people say that a cat rig or cat ketch rig cannot by its very nature be as close winded as a sloop, but apparently this is not the case. Apart from upwind, I know that those who race Norwalk Islands Sharpies report they are very competitive reaching and downwind against similar boats with spinnakers, indeed they are often faster. Cheers. Pete
Nicely done gentlemen! Lovely vessel!
It's pretty, be HAPPY!
Nice boat! Maybe you need an electric winch or a really strong wench. Thanks for sharing.
These are such lovely boats!
