I'm looking for videos on this type of grements that show the execution of maneuvers, especially in strong winds, for sail reduction. I can't find any. Do you have any? I thought a yawl is when the mizzen mast is behind the rudder and if the mizzen mast is in front of the rudder then it's a ketch rig. That has been my understanding of what makes a yawl different to a ketch.

I seen these boats advertised with plans on the NIS website...it isn't clear if it's s set a set of plans or a booklet ..I wrote to them many times and asked if a home builder could build this boat with the " booklet'...didn't get a reply so their customer service is naff ..shame as it's a beautiful boat but the snobbery of the designer puts me off building one ..yes he designed the Lazer dinghy also and maybe has a right to be but shocked to see Iain Oughterad advertised on the same site ..working boats being his theme .. his boats are gone down in my expectations too..Stray moggy boat company or something ...hard to believe they could design a boat do practical and intelligent..yet be so boorish. Thanks Peter. Those Sharpies are an interesting boat. Just a tip, flip your phone on it’s side when filming. Landscape orientation is better for viewing.

How do you sail dead downwind on a cat ketch? Both sails the same side with preventers?

Easy mast laydown. Impressive! Are that tabernacles really strong enough to hold the mast in a strong puff when forgot to reef? I think the mast is a long lever and the tabernacle relativly short…

Beautiful boat but she heels very much, wouldn ´t it be better to reef earlier? How is her behavior in coastal waters or offshore with more wind and higher waves?

Always good to see an NIS sailing well in a stiff breeze. Looks like fun. My wife and I have been sailing Mudlark our NIS 31 for seventeen years. At the moment we are putting on a new rub rail and toe rail and painting the deck with awlgrip. I have never grown weary of sailing these wonderful boats. Cheers.

The sharpie hull is initially very tender. At rest one has to be careful in boarding the boat from a dock and warn anyone boarding about the "tipping". However when sailing the boat is stable, rock steady through puffs and lulls. She leans over until her chine steadies her and there she stays. The sharpie is the most stable of all small trailable boats of her size (ie 6 to 8 m) with none of the sawing over and back when puffs hit. In light conditions she is a real flier belying her size and sail area Rob, Sharpie 23 owner and experienced small yacht sailor.

I sent for study plans of the Norwalk Islands Sharpies back in the early 90's, when I thought about building one. It was immediately obvious, when looking at the lines, that the boat's hull form would have very low initial stability... and that stability would not increase much until a very great angle of heel. These are absurdly skinny at the bottom, that is... and then the topsides become buoyant much higher up. It is interesting to see all these videos of them in action, checking back in on these boats. My fears almost 25 years are clearly well founded, when you see how "tippy" they are, and how narrow when seen on end, and how far over they heel in light breezes. I am surprised the designs were not fixed/modified, long ago, to a more proper, stable design. There is always that yin/yang question of which is better: More initial, or more healing, stability... of course. Some say you should not have a large amount of initial stability, and hold more in reserve. I get that. But even the latter design philosophy should start with a hull form far more initially stable than these. NIS's only superficially resemble sharpies in concept, while missing the positive design elements of sharpies... which usually have a wide rocker bottom. The closest hull form I've seen to the NIS's would be a dory... but dories were intended as work boats, to be loaded with fish quickly, to submerge their skinny bottoms... NIS cruisers are not so designed... these are light cruising boats, not meant to be loaded down, so they will always remain in an unstable state.

(you may wish to join the nis forum to get other opinions from owners etc - groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/nisboats ) I have sailed both the ketch and now the yawl. the uncluttered cockpit of the yawl is great - makes it feel like a bigger boat. sails very nicely and well balanced. slight downsides are the extra "clutter" around the transom - the outboard, rudder, bumkin, etc all competing for space

She looks pretty smart Gav. You've done an incredible job and now it's time to enjoy the fruits of your labour.

So quick and seems easy to get those masts ready to sail. Enjoy her for decades!!!
