Last week I mentioned briefly about treating SIBO or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth using Clove bud. But today I wanted to expand on that further and look at some herbs that contain different compounds that are essential if we want to get on top of this bacterial overgrowth. And at the end of todays video I will also talk about the best probiotic strain to address SIBO infection so stay tuned to learn more in todays short video.
Hi there Lyndall Pinchen, canine naturopath from canine vitality and welcome back to Happy healthy dogs. If you are new to my channel than don’t forget to subscribe to my channel to get more great video content and welcome back to all my regular watchers. Thankyou for stopping by!
So just to quickly revise, what is SIBO?? The small intestine in our dogs gut when healthy, contains only very small levels of bacteria. However SIBO is a condition where excessive bacteria grow starts to grow in this small intestine and this overgrowth can lead to various digestive symptoms and nutritional deficiencies due to malabsorption. Symptoms can include ongoing diarrhoea, or constipation, bloating and wind, gut pain and malabsorption . This can lead to nutritional deficiency and unexplained weight loss along with poor energy, depression and other signs. Typically, even if diagnosed correctly, this will conventionally be treated with antibiotics but due to resistance, this is not always effective and of course, we know the issues for our dogs gut in regards to any doses of antibiotic meds. And this is where herbs come into play. But due to the resistant nature of the bacteria found in the small bowel it is important that we focus on a combination of different types of herbs that have specific compounds and actions so as to target the bacteria in a number of ways. Lets take a look at some of these
The first group of herbs that we need to consider when treating SIBO are those that are rich in what is known as berberine. What is berberine?? This naturally occurring alkaloid compound is found in good levels in herbs such as BARBERRY, GOLDEN SEAL, OREGON GRAPE ROOT AND PHELLONDENDRON - you will usually know that a herb has this compound as it tends to leave a yellow straining on your finger when using the tincture. Berberine has strong antimicrobial properties and is active against a wide range of bacteria and other pathogens including yeasts. It can help destroy the biofilm of the bacteria helping to kill off the cells. One thing to note with SIBO is that if your dog does have this overgrowth and are still ingesting certain carbohydrates, this can cause a fermentation in the gut leading to the production of gases such as methane. Not only does berberine help kill off this overgrowth of bacteria but it can help neutralize the gases associated with this helping reduce bloating and wind. Using one or a combination of berberine rich herbs for a period of weeks can help to significantly reduce the bacterial overgrowth in your dogs small bowel.

    I looked at this video because my dog has Pemphigus, and I was trying to find information about it. He keeps breaking out in big ... they look like abraisions on his back and body - as if he has had a scrape, but in places where his fur would prevent that. Initially, his feet were in a bad way, but after medication from the vet, he appears in good health now, apart from the sores, but they don't seem to bother him. They are thin, flat scabs, and I'm having to keep him "clothed" to stop him licking them and making them worse. He's also losing his fur, and getting bare patches. He's on steroids (vet's orders), but I do give him milk and bits of cheese (because he shows that he loves it), legumes not so much, but he gets scraps left over from our dinner etc. which include pasta and such. I will certainbly be changing his diet as a result of this info. I wasn't familiar with "kibble", but I just looked it up to see what it is, and Google tells me "coarsely ground meal or grain typically used as animal feed. especially : small, dry pellets of processed food for pets (such as dogs and cats)". That suggests dog and cat biscuits. When I'm feeding our cat, I usually give the dog a little handful of cat biscuits as well. Could you say exactly what you mean by "kibble", please, and specifically what foods should be avoided? Superb video, by the way - and what seems like unbiassed information, not motivated by profit. If only more UA-camrs would follow your example!

      Hi Michael in Australia we refer to dry dog 'biscuits' as kibble-any processed dogs foods- dry or wet nee to be avoided in autoimmunity along with gluten, dairy and preservatives. An antiinflammatory diet is the focus and using fresh natural foods is the best way. thankyou for your comments- I am only interested in the dog and no other reason!!!, Lyndall CV

      @@HappyHealthyDogs Many thanks for the reply. I usually put him to bed with a "tooth brush" - a Pedigree Dentastix - but now, I'm a bit unsure of the wisdom of that. They definitely help to keep his teeth clean, but the packet doesn't say what's in them. They look moulded, so they're definitely processed, but gluten etc - I just don't know.

    Good morning-I have a Rhodesian that has had a cough for a month and some reverse sneezing when eating or drinking-(at her worse). I have had her to the vet /vets and $7000 later her body has been over-run with 4 rounds of antibiotics-steroids, anti parasitics and with very little relief. I am very much into the natural remedies for my pets but feared it was her heart and here we are still with no answers but to give her an inhaler. I have been reading about mullein and the natural herbs and would like to treat my baby. I have mullein leaf and marshmallow root to make a hot/cold fusion- what do you recommend as a dosing and how often?

    Hi 👋 it's Calvin Napier from the USA. I have a 14 lb Rat Terrier 14 yrs old. I adopted Robbie about 2 yrs ago he was in terrible condition very overweight could barely walk. From what we understand he was physically abused. When he stands his fronts legs would often shake and now he has developed seizures. Very strange he will sleep peacefully through the night and when we get up in the morning to take him out to pee he comes back in to have a seizure. My vet wants only to put him on conventional meds. I'm giving you a list of what I'm doing naturally that doesn't seem to be working. Any thoughts of what else I need to do? 1. Small Batch raw dog food 88% pork, organ and bone 10% vegetables 2% natural supplements 2. Cornbread CBD oil for dogs 750mg 0.5 THC. 25ml 4 times a day. On a little bit of peanut butter. 3. Nature's Way MCT Oil. 1/2 teaspoon in morning, 1/2 teaspoon evening. 4. Nutiva Hempseed oil. 1/2 teaspoon morning, 1/2 teaspoon evening. 5. Dog Greens plant based vitamins and minerals. 1/2 teaspoon morning, 1/2 teaspoon evening. 6. Fera Pet Organics probiotics and prebiotics. 1/4 teaspoon in morning. 7. Super Snouts green lipped mussels 1/8 teaspoon evening 8. No vaccines since I've had him 9. No chemical flea and tick meds. 10. Colostrum 1/4 teaspoon morning

    I had a female Australian Shepherd that had several bad bacterial intestinal infections as a young dog from eating mulch, etc. She had to be given antibiotics both times and got a horrible yeast infection all over her body. Her poor but looked like a red baboon but. No hair at all. I didn't know what it was though. Her vet kept saying it was allergies and gave her steroids. I struggled with this for 2 years. The 3rd time he suggested steroids, I refused and researched it until I found an example of another dog with the same symptoms. It was yeast infection. I was reading that you had to do a cleanse, and lots of bathing, etc. I did none of that. Probiotics alone cured her pretty quickly. Within a week the red and black blotches on her belly were fading and within a month her hair was well on its way to growing back. I have kept all my dogs on probiotics most of the time since. Recently I ran out of Probiotics for my current Aussie and he has been getting frequent yeasty ears. The antifungal wash gives him relief but once I got him back on probiotics the problem has not returned.

    Very good information. I lightly steam organic brocolli, sometimes org carrots, and org green beans. I also sometimes use a little cauliflower. I add dandelion greens when available . I did not know about watercress. I eat that often. I wondered about giving it to dogs. I stay away from spinach, because of the oxilates, myself. Years ago spicy salad with parmesan was a trend. I wondered about that because of the calcium in the cheese binding with the oxilates.

    So interesting! I primarily use green beans, broccoli, peas & carrots & pumpkin as veggie toppings on their raw food. Not all at once. I rotate it. However, regarding the sweet potato,I usually cut them up into French Fry strips & dehydrate in the oven for 4 hours. And utilize them as a treat periodically. Knowing it is high in carbohydrates. GI/Gut Issues: Primarily, restlessness and pacing episodes + other discomfort incl. inconsistent stools (mucus, slimy, smelly) and flatulence However most of his stools problems got much better after introduction of enzymes ( fed him raw, frozen beef pancreas, from Feb-Mar'24), however his stools seemed constipated and he was straining to defecate during rhis period. Simultaneously during this period, he was also on herb supplements (incl. slippery elm+marshmallow root+fennel) and soil based probiotics. On 2 Apr'24, he again had restlessness episode and I stopped this regime. Hemceforth, I had to visit vet and temporarily for 2 weeks, followed a regime of Sulfaslaazine + another probiotics+incl. Enterococcus faecium, lactobacillus Acidophilus). Till now, his fecal tests were normal except lkw elastase but after regime - he contracted Candida yeast infection in the gut (as reported in faecal cytology report) for the 1st time ever 3. Poor Hair: During past 6-8 months, his hair have lost its lusture and volume, looks very rough, thin and most importantly, are growing grey at a fast rate. Skin is fine but there are episodes of itching and sometimes hotspots. 4. Runny/Wet nose (transparent nose dripping since 3 months, happening for the 1st time ever. No known allergies in this regard) 5. Lethargy (but good appetite) Diagnostics test and imaging are mostly fine, except low normal T4/FT4 (unfortunately no one do ED testing of FT4 here, also I have checked reference rangws of some US labs and if I consider them, FT4 comes under low normal). They are not too low but definitely below the reference range as per Indian reference ranges. Vets here say that he is euthyroid sick! No signs of worms/parasites as such. But Low normal Vit B12 and Folate levels are there. TLI is comfortably within range. Faecal elastase however came to be low and hence vet diagnosed him with SIBO/IBS/IBD and put him on Sulfaslaazine and probiotics (which clearly didn't work). Dr, I live in India and there are some new businesses offering great herbal products. My question to you is to please suggest so that I can buy right products: 1) ingredient combination of herbs and supplements and other instructions, etc to solve for chronic gut related malabsorption and SIBO/yeast/etc. 2) Is he really sick euthyroid or it's primary hypothyroidism? How to go about working this situation out? Since I know both gut and thyroid are inter related but can't say which is primary. Since 2 weeks, I have eliminated all grains, dairy, fruits, and starchy veggies and having him on 100% meat based diet. But clearly, this is not enough. In this duration, he also lost 1 kg (maybe because of carbs elimination). Hence this long post and your kind consideration for my loving dog who apparently is losing his vitality as we speak. I really don't want him to progress him to Leaky Gut and related complications + using allopathic meds. Please help!

I can’t seem to find anything that doesn’t have grains, sweet potatoes, or white potatoes. I tried making my own with kale, broccoli, egg, apples. & cucumbers with some beef bone broth. My dog does not like it! lol! The challenge is not knowing how much of each ingredient and how much to feed her. Is calculating kcal important when making food at home? I wish there was a calculator to determine how much to feed based on weight of the dog. • @HappyHealthyDogs
      @HappyHealthyDogs 2 місяці тому

      thanks Liz. Sweet potato is ok just so you realise that. The normal amount of food for a raw diet for dogs is 2-3% of their ideal bodyweight so you can calculate a general amount if feeding raw..Cooked diets vary..I don't have any specific recipes as I work more on recommending certain foods and putting the dog on a raw diet where possible. Are you giving Milk thistle? This along with Dandelion root, Globe artichoke ,Turmeric and Fennel as some examples. Look for a frozen premade organic food that is based around proteins like fish and poultry along with veggies. As I said sweet potato is fine. I can only give recommendations on products I can purchase here on Australia for my clients but I'm sure there would be similar ones in your local area x

      Hi Willow to access my products I have had to set them up behind an account system. This is a free account but the reason is due to Government regulations in Australia. Many practitioners here are being shut down if they freely advertise their products so the only way I can let people access them without having them obviously on show is to have people sign into an account. It has nothing to do with gaining etc data on you or anything like that. On my website I also have a page about my formulas which explains a bit about this. You may not know how heavily we are regulated here in Australia unfortunately. Anyway that is why. If you follow me long enough you'll see my intentions are only in tge best interests of the dogs. I tried leave a comment on my phone as you suggested but I had technical difficulties. I have a 7 year old boxer mix. As far as I know he has chronic allergies. I did not know about getting his thyroid checked until today when I saw one of your videos. We got him a few days shy of 1 year old, and he had a yeast infection. It has been an uphill battle since we got him. We have tried all sorts of kibble, and even for about 6 months we did a mix of raw and canned food (meat only no veg or grain). Nothing worked. We tried apoquel and it did not work unless he took 2 full pills a day which is not allowed. We have restorted to cytopoint with mediocre results. Does not stop the itch but it definitely helps. He has chronic yeast and bacterial infections. Has to go on antibiotics about 2x a year. He is currently "under attack", meaning the yeast/bacteria have taken over. It is ever present, but it is more under control. He smells very bad and is needing antifungal/bacterial baths every other day, most times with apple cider vinegar rinse after. Of course I know all of this isn't good for him but our hands are tied between financial reasons and the fact we don't have vets like you where we live. Our nearest naturopathic vet is 3 hours away if there is one (im just assuming since its a huge city and has other specialty vets). His allergies have affected his eyes and we just spent a couple grand on the doggy opthomologist in the city 3 hours away. It has to be a day trip, we can not afford a hotel, let alone findng a safe hotel that will take pets. Your video I found earlier today has helped with loads of stuff to give him, but now I need to know how much to give him. And what do we do about the fact I can't raw diet him, let alone our French Mastiff. Will any of the supplements help if he isnt on an all meat diet? Im learning to fermet foods and have been giving them both some of the sauerkraut I made. I am hoping this will help with the yeast infection. I have been giving the "extras" with their kibble. If I have some sort of meat to give them I do. I try to add low carb/sugar veg of some sort daily. The boxer is supposed to be on antibiotics since hes "under attack". But we kept missing doses, and that is not helpful, so I stopped them. We are allowed to administer at our discretion. The vets know we dont abuse it and have learned him very well. But life is pretty busy and we kept forgetting doses. The vets here told me there is no cure for allergies. I believe there is something better than what they choose. Ive fed coconut oil off and on and never saw any change. I've tried rubbing it on him and no change. I havn't given up, its just I don't have any guideance. I am so glad your videos exist, because I believe natural is the way when it comes to the allergies. People need to know the facts. I hope you can help some how. Thank you
