How a softball catcher can make a pitcher better
Do you have a video on lefty throwing to 3rd drill? You have great advice for leftys. So thank you.
I have a question. Can you do a video on over coming the left handed catcher stigma? My daughter is 9 and is going through a really hard time finding a team because all the coaches are telling her a lefty can’t be a catcher.
I have heard this so many times! You can tell these coaches that they obviously are new to softball if they did not know that I won a Gold Medal as a left handed catcher. Have your daughter google me, then feel free to find me on Instagram or Facebook and we can chat more if you have other questions.
I have a small 11 year old starting 12U fastpitch. Are there differences in softball catchers gear, or is baseball gear acceptable? Sorry if that's a dumb question
Not a dumb question at all. Which every gear fits best there isn’t a difference other then the baseball chest protector usually has an extra part for protecting the downward region (Fastpitch gear doesn’t have this). Sometimes it is Velcro and can be taken off which then will make it the same gear.
20 years coaching baseball. I have 2 girls though. 1 year coaching fastpitch.... thank you for this video.
ua-cam.com/users/shortsbO9zY40KmiA?feature=share. Check this video out. I think it would help get into better position. I hope this helps. Keep up the hard work!
This, to me, seems like an inaccurate representation of baseball versus softball throws to second. The reason being, the softball example did not receive a pitch (she already had a ball in her mitt) and was in a controlled training facility. The baseball example was not in a similarly controlled environment and was receiving a pitch. I believe this is just simply not an accurate comparison of baseball and softball catchers throwing to second. The softball player would obviously look more comfortable as she already had a ball in her mitt and was in the cages. If you’d like to show an accurate comparison then you would give a softball and baseball player equal atmospheres to perform in.
There is not enough of this content available! Thank you.
My daughter plays nationally as a left handed catcher in 16u. Anything you can provide helps. She has a rocket arm and is always discriminated against by recruiters because she’s left handed. We’ve been told she has the skills of a Power 5. We just need help getting and advantage she can get
I’d think that would be a fine line between obstructing the plate. At least in LL it would be.
Thank you for this! It's the best explanation I've seen on HOW to make sure the gear the kids are wearing fits them appropriately! I'll be looking through the rest of your videos. I appreciate you taking the time to make this so we can teach the next generation of athletes.
You’re so welcome! Glad it helped.
Hi, I'm a left handed catcher and was wondering about the squatting position I should be in behind the plate, I'm not that confident always thinking I'm doing it wrong. Same with the pop up for a throw down to second. Could you make a video explaining what to do please, thank you.
do you have instagram? if you do, follow me @Jenny Topping Oly Message me, and I will send you to a video explaining it. So glad you continue to catch! We need more Lefty catchers!!
Thank you! Lessons learned.
Left handed catcher. Thats your frist problem you need to fix. Oh yeah its softball not baseball.
Hey so on the chest protector from my base neck to bellybutton is 13.5 but I’ve heard to do it from base neck to waist is 14.5 should I go 13.5 or 14.5 inch chest protector
I would say if your daughter would like more protection then go for the size bigger. Especially if she is younger
i caught D1 and my “squats” didn’t look like either of those.
Just wanted to Thank you.
Easton
Thank you!

I would not use the 0ower squat I would use a REGUALAR squat
I loved this. This really hit home for me with my daughter. Thank you. Keep Preaching! I love it. I learned a lot!
Thanks a lot for your expertise!
I use a middle squat but for throwing a runner out I use a side square
Great tip
What if the runner slides into your leg while sliding?
Thanks so much! This was helpful for me and my 10 yr old boy as well. I love coach's who go over and beyond for our kids, but you are going the extra mile for even more kids. I want you to feel the appreciation. Your kids are blessed🥰
Thanks so much!
GREAT VIDEO NEED MORE LEFT HANDED CATCHER..
So glad you liked it. let me know if there are specific videos you want and I will do my best to make!
I use power squat when runners on
I am catcher!
thankyou for posting this i have always wondered what I was supposed to do because whenever our coach would show us how to tag a runner out they would teach us as being a righty cause most catchers arent lefty it also helps to know that there are lefty catchers that have made it far into the game because there are alot of people who say i cant be a catcher because im small and left handed im 13 turning 14 and im hoping to see if you have any tips that could help me become a better catcher thankyou
Here is the deal...many people are going to tell you in your life you can't do something, and if you believe them....then you can't.... if you don't then you CAN.!!!
I teach my catchers to use a full squat if no runners on. Power squat if runners on
Agreed - also w 2 strikes I teach power squat (secondary stance) as well.
totaleffort man how awesome is it to see a kids face light up when they throw out a base runner?
Re u guys catching teachers
I would use the power squat because it allows you to have more power
I would use the power squat
Thank you for posting these videos. My daughter is left handed and there is almost nothing out there to show her how to catch as a Lefty.
You're so welcome! Let me know if there is something specific you would like to learn for lefties!
Jenny, Thanks for posting. I have a twelve year old daughter, that LOVES catching. I honestly tried to talk her out of it and get her to play third because she's got a cannon for an arm, but she insisted. She's tough as nails, and completely fearless behind the plate. When she started catching she was terrible but she's worked her tail off to be pretty good and I want to buy her her own gear. We happen to have 5 kids, all adopted, so there's not a ton of extra money, but since she's worked so hard at being a better catcher I'm willing to try to get her good stuff that fits so she can quit using the city league stuff. I just don't want to have to buy a new stuff every year so is it better to piece stuff together and when she outgrows one portion of the gear just to add new shin guards or a new chest protector etc or is buying a set better? And what are your opinions on used gear? This has turned into more of an email but I appreciate your response it's hard to ask people when you don't know stuff, but a little easier to do it online.
Oh, is there ever a time that it's okay to let kids grow into something? Or let something be just a tad too small? Can this be done without having a huge compromising safety or performance?
Justin and Kathy Hansen I would suggest play it again sports or sometimes you will find gear in good condition that athletes have grown out of. You can totally replace pieces as she grows out of, mainly leg guards!
Justin and Kathy Hansen yes if money is a concern small is better then way too big.
If you have a cannon for an arm then you should be playing catcher because catcher's have to throw out runners which you need to have a very good arm for.
Haha how coincidental looking for some softball videos and found my cousin 😂😂 great video
And I’m a catcher
I’m ten it doesn’t heart
All good points. #4 is my pet peeve for sure. It sets off the coaches and the crowd especially when the pitch isn't that close.
Great video!
I like Easton Gear but I’m trying Rawlings gear this coming season
Easton gear seems nice. last 4-5 years of my career I wore diamond gear.
@@jennytoppinggoldmedaltrain3576 Easton Gear worked great, But needed a bigger size
Great video. Do you happen to have a model # on the Schutt facemask?
Hi there, here is a link! www.schuttstore.com/air-maxx-2966-hockey-style-catchers-helmet-w-matching-guard.html Thanks for watching!
Awesome video... It is so helpful 👍
Madison M Glad to hear you got value for it!
Don’t attack the umpire. I’ve had quite a few times recently where it’s been a close play, and I’ve had players literally jump on me and their team mates have had to drag them off.
Ya that is a very important part that I just assume people know. It does seem like there is an increasing aggressiveness toward umpires. NEVER ok.
If the umpire gets hit by a pitch in the dirt or a foul ball then the catcher should go talk to the pitcher to give the blue time to recuperate. That helps in building a good relationship.
Yes exactly right! A role of a catcher is definitely to protect the umpire! I love the idea of calling time and talking to pitcher to give the ump some time! Great point
Can you think of one or 2 things I missed that are important with umpires?
Great question. If you are a consistent blocker I would suggest not blocking with no runners on. This does a few things, this prevents us from turning our glove over on a pillow pitch that we could possibly frame, and it also saves energy. If the ball gets past you with no runners on then we need to hustle to get it but there is no harm down because there is no runner on base to advance. Great question!
Thank you for your awnser, and I have another question about blocking. I find it difficult when I am blocking to put my toes in the ground so I can get up quickly. And even if I do get my toes in the ground, I can't jump up quickly from that position. Do you have any advice or excersises that can help me? Thank you for replying to my previous question!
Do you mean when catchers kick back onto their leg guards, and then hip drive back up onto their feet?@@wendyvanwijk8325
@@jennytoppinggoldmedaltrain3576 Yes that's it! Sorry for the late respons I live in Europe so I think we have a bit time differance
wendy van wijk I would say the more you practice, and anticipate pitches that go in the dirt with runners on the better you will get at blocking!
Hi, I have a question. What should I do when there is nobody on base and my pitcher throws a fastball in the dirt. I'm in my primairy stance. Should I try to block them or put my glove on the ground, both risking a passed ball?
Great question! When there is no runner on base ad the ball goes in the dirt we don't need to block because there is not a runner on to worry about them taking another base. you can conserve your energy, frame more low pitches because your not worried about turning your glove over to block it. Once there is a runner on we want to anticipate and prepare to block.
Hi, I know you did a video on blocking already but I was wondering if you could do a video on how players could be confident with blocking and how to loose the fear also some things you would advise to someone who is struggling with blocking
Hi Madison, I can definitely work on this video for you. Is the fear of blocking because of not wanting it to hurt, or fear of ball getting past this player?
find me on instagram, and I can send you more videos. Jenny Topping Oly
