WHY Do We Homeschool?
Переглядів 3932 роки тому
This is a question that's come from many people in many forms since we began homeschooling several years ago. And today I'm excited to share our WHY. Even though homeschooling has risen in popularity over the past couple of years, it's still not the default option for most families. So I'm sharing my heart about why we've made the decision to home educate our children. #homeschooling #charlotte...

Charlotte Mason Elementary Arithmetic Book 1 - Homeschool Curriculum Review
Переглядів 6 тис.2 роки тому
Check out my full review of The Charlotte Mason Elementary Arithmetic Series from Simply Charlotte Mason (could also be called why I LOVE this homeschool math curriculum)! In today's video, I'm discussing Book 1 from the series and giving you 5 reasons you should jump in and add this to your homeschool. If you're a Charlotte Mason homeschooler who's been on the fence about diving into CM math (...
This was soooo helpful!! Thank you!! I am scheduled to have a consult with ADE! I’m curious since you made this video 2 years ago is your oldest now going into 5th grade? I’m wondering about combining subjects since I’ll have a 3rd and 5th grader next year. Again, thank you! This video was very informative.
We use the same version of the Little Pilgrim's Progress and my daughter loves it. Started when she was about 5 or 5.5 and did 1 chapter 2-3 times a week. I read and she narrated. Took a long time cuz lots of chapters. I love how its "easier" for younger kids to understand but still keeps the essence of the original story. Finally finished Christian's part and decided to move the Christiana part as bedtime story (no narrations). And thus my husband got to read it with my her and he loves it too.
Are J. Paterson Smyth’s books based mostly on a Catholic view?
Great question! They're actually written from an Anglican perspective, if that helps at all.
I love CM as well but never knew how to start it. I don’t know a thing about terms. My kids are older. With that said, they have extreme learning disabilities. 9th and 10th graders on a 1st/2nd grade level. I have lazy 5th grader and he is “behind” due to a speech delay early on and his laziness for schoolwork, but he is pretty smart and a fast learner. Where would I start? I don’t have time to read her books. I’d love to. Was there a source you found helpful and where to you get your term lists?
I would recommend starting with A Delectable Education's podcast. It's a great way to "dip your toes in" while you're getting chores done, and they have their episodes broken into categories and forms, so you can learn about one area of a CM education at a time!
Beautiful Teacher
Love the sceduling. Do you shift things due to sick days at all?
Great question! I don't shift things for sick days or other unexpected interruptions. I build in some buffer days each term, so if we miss a day, I can make it up later.
Are you still using SCM math at this point? Thanks!
Yes! We actually switched to Beauty & Truth Math Year 3 last year, but we're back to Elementary Arithmetic Book 4 this year!
Helpful and I’m glad that you kept this video under 10 min. I see lots of videos like this but 20-30 minutes and I just don’t have that much time!
Girl, same! ❤️
How do you decide which books to use? This is the part I get stuck on; I know the subjects, but don't know which books to use.
I utilize several different sources to choose my book lists each year: Ambleside Online recommendations (I don't follow their curriculum, but they have great book lists), A Delectable Education's recommendations, and a couple of Charlotte Mason Facebook groups.
Where do you find and choose all your resources/books?
I recently found the schedule cards, and I agree they are so helpful! As you were talking about gluing the cards and it not working for you, I thought, what if you laminated the cards first and then used magnetic strips on the back and hung them on a magnetic board. Then you can easily rearrange them and still have it up to see.
That's a great idea! I ended up coming up with a different solution that's working for now. I get my schedule cards the way I want them, then I take a picture of them on my phone. I then put the schedule into a color-coded table, print it, and laminate it. That allows me to tuck it into my planner and plan on the go!
Hey sweet mama! I just subscribed to your channel. This is very helpful! We are a Charlotte Mason/ Classical homeschool family! Love this. Thank you for sharing! 🙏☺️
Welcome!! I'm glad you're here and I'm glad this was helpful!
Would you be willing to share a copy of your planner pages that have the two sets of 36 weeks with the book name on the side? Those are such a great idea!
I am currently working on tweaking my planner to add it to my online shop! I'll announce it when it's available!
Great video! What did you do for kindergarten? Do you wait until the kiddos are older to start anything?
Thank you! I wait until my kiddos are around 6 to start Kindergarten (or the year they're 5, going on 6) and then we do a pretty light year. Here's a video I did a couple of years ago sharing my middle kiddo's Kindergarten plan: ua-cam.com/video/9A9m-TfAg9g/v-deo.htmlsi=5Mdw2b4bcR6hkS2V
Yay!! Will you be posting your curriculum for this upcoming year? I love your book choices and style:)
Yes, I will be! I'm working on getting the last few books ordered and subjects prepped, and then I'll have the videos up! Thank you for asking!
I plan very similar to your style but I use excel instead of the print outs, :) I appreciated your talk on forecasting which I was sort of doing but never could organize like you. Loved your homeschool planner spread!
Excel is a great idea! Figuring out forecasting in our homeschool has been a game-changer!
Curious what are you doing for your son in kindergarten 😊 Thank you for the video. Super helpful ❤
You’re welcome!! I recorded this planning video a couple of years ago, and I have a video where I shared what we used for Kindergarten: ua-cam.com/video/9A9m-TfAg9g/v-deo.htmlsi=-fCIq4ZUTTDfXH57 Happy planning! ❤️
Have you ever had a consult with ADE?
I haven't yet, but it's definitely on my list of things to do one of these years!
Do you have a link to those cards?
Yes, I'm so sorry for not including the link (I've added it to the description)! Here it is: www.adelectableeducation.com/downloads/scheduling-cards/
What planner are you using?
That's a great question! I actually made my own planner to use because I could never find *exactly* what I wanted. I just recently did a flip-through of it on my Instagram stories, and you can see it in my "Planning" highlight. :)
What do exams look like?? Do you do any type of holiday units such as Easter/Christmas? Also, what ages do you have going into 24-25 school year?
Great questions! I have a blog post about how we do exams in our homeschool: www.abeautifullywreckedlife.com/exam-week-how-we-do-exams-in-our-charlotte-mason-homeschool/. It's from a few years ago, but that's still basically how we do them. We don't typically do any kind of Easter or Christmas units for our morning lessons, but I usually add special extras for both Advent and Lent. We do some of them in the afternoons (like baking cookies or making crafts) and some of them as a family in the evenings (like our Advent calendar, etc.). For the 24-25 school year, I'll have a 4th grader, 2nd grader, and very informal preschooler. :)
Hi! Love this video so much! Can you share how you schedule all of your geography lessons?
Thank you! I'm actually working a Q&A video, and will be answering this question in depth!
I’m loving your videos! I wish you were still making more!❤😊 I have been homeschooling for 5 years, but am trying a little more CM each year. I have 18 more years to go…so by then I will be fully CM 😂
Thank you for the encouragement! I'm *hopefully* going to be making more starting this summer! And YES, I get a little more CM every year, too!
Nice review! 1 year later update would be great 👍
Thank you! Math has been a whole thing in our homeschool, and I'll be sharing more about our math journey soon!
I would love to know where to get the visual aides that you spoke of. The scheduling cards and curriculum templates. I looked on the ADE site but didn't see them, or how to order them.
I'll add those to the video description, but here are the direct links (not an affiliate): www.adelectableeducation.com/downloads/curriculum-templates/ www.adelectableeducation.com/downloads/scheduling-cards/
Would Charlotte mason work for someone they also has to work part time? Do you have it all everyday?
I actually work part-time from home every afternoon, and Charlotte Mason works perfectly for us! I'm working on a Q&A video, though, and will be answering this question in more detail!
Hi, do you still love this curriculum a year later? Next year I'll have a 2nd grader and 5th grader coming from Master Books. Would you recommend starting with book 1 for the 2nd grader since we did not learn math "the Charlotte Mason way?" Thanks!
I would love an update as well. Looking at jumping in but a little hesitant.
Yes! We switched to Beauty & Truth Math last year, but we're back to Elementary Arithmetic Book 4 this year!
Do you do read alouds?
Thank you so much!! This was immensely helpful.
I'm so glad it was helpful!
Love your choices. Thanks for sharing. Just subscribed. I’m trying to move more toward CM in our homeschool. I also have a channel mainly about homeschooling and it would be fun to be friends and connect here 😊
I’m interested in this math book but we keep school secular. Does the book include religious text?
I can’t thank you enough for this review and your experience with this curriculum. Many blessings and would love continued homeschool related content!
Thank you so much for your kind words!
Thank you for this review - I purchased the CM Elem Arithmetic Book 1 (for my first grader and book 3 for my 3rd grader). This is my first Simply CM Homeschool year. LY was my very first homeschool year. I have jumped right in (will start our school year in the middle of August). So question for you - should I start my 3rd grader in book 3, or should I go ahead and start with the foundational Book 1 with my daughter. He will probably advance quite quickly, so I would think we could do more than one lesson in a 20 minute time period. Thoughts on what you would do or would suggest? - My son has used Saxon Math and ACE Math and then we have started grade 3 Good & Beautiful during the summer to keep up with Math so he doesn't "fall" behind. Thank you! Debbi
Curious if you’ve moved to Elementary Arithmetic 3?
Hi Rachael! Instead of moving on to EA Book 3, we've actually switched to Beauty & Truth Math for Year 3. I'm still using EA Books 1 and 2 with my younger kiddos, though, because I do really love them!
@@abeautifullywreckedlife ok :) I would love to know more about your choice in switching! I’m trying to figure out for my upcoming 3rd grader.
This was very helpful. Thank you so much. As a mom starting back again, with using Charlotte Mason's methods, and really now delving in to reading her work, this is a big encouragement and help!
Awww, yay!! I'm so glad it was helpful!
Well, there we have it. If I had any doubts about going this route before watching this video, they were definitely diminished here!
Thank you for your time explaining what you loved about this curriculum and why the others were not working. Very helpful!❤
You're welcome! I'm glad it was helpful!
Thank you for your video! Do you by chance have a link to the frame holding the paddle to the sea map?
I do! It's this one on Amazon (affiliate link): amzn.to/3JS6oGs. I hope that helps!
Hi, are you still enjoying and recommend SCM Arithmetic? I’m considering it next year for my 2nd grader.
Yes, I do still love Elementary Arithmetic! We actually switched to Beauty & Truth Year 3 for my oldest son, but I'm still using SCM EA Books 1 and 2 for my younger kiddos. *Hopefully* I can get a video up soon comparing the two!
@abeautifullywreckedlife A comparison video would be AMAZING! I actually purchased both SCM Arithmetic and Beauty & Truth Math to look over this summer, but I am still having a difficult time deciding between the two.
i don't know if you have any family from the south but i swear we must be related because you look so much like me and my family LOL. i am a homeschooling mom of a 8 and 6 year old. i throw in some CM when it works!! great video, thanks!!
Haha, I love this!
This is a really helpful explanation of the math curriculum, thank you!!
I'm glad it was helpful!
Thank you for the awesome video!!
You're welcome!
I am learning about CM as we go 😆 CMEC has a lot of PNEU articles btw.
I'm always learning as I go, too! I am so intrigued by the CMEC, but haven't taken the leap into it at this point!
@@abeautifullywreckedlifeit’s wonderful. I highly recommend it. It is a wealth of information.
Hey there friend! Imagine finding you here researching CM! Thank you and I will be asking you for help in person!
I love this so much! You know I'm always happy to answer your questions!!
Thanks for this awesome video! I love your recommendations
You're welcome! I'm glad it was helpful!
How long does a typical day take?
Hi Angela! We usually spend between 2-3 hours on school each morning, and then we typically add some type of nature study, scouting lesson, or handicraft in the afternoons for occupations.
I will start homeschooling after the summer. Thanks for sharing your experience. I appreciate the the detailed information.
Yay! I'm glad it was helpful! Have a wonderful school year!
I know this is older video but I'm curious about the SCM math. I've heard on another review video that SCM math isn't enough and needs more
That's a great question! Elementary Arithmetic follows a very different scope and sequence from more traditional math programs, so things like calendar, telling time, geometry, etc. aren't covered in the first couple of years (I simply added those in on my own). However, it does develop a very solid number sense and really gets students comfortable with mental math and problem solving. Everyone will feel differently about what they want a math program to cover, so I think it's important to identify your goals for your homeschool and keep that in mind when selecting a program. I'm happy to answer any other questions you have about our experience with it!
This is the most helpful review I have EVER watched about CM curriculum. I literally JUST researched about every source you mentioned RIGHT before watching your video. I still have tabs open for Singapore Math, Simply Charlotte Mason Arithmetic and Beauty and Truth! Thank you so much for this. I was literally about to be so overwhelmed!
Awww, I'm so glad it was helpful! Did you end up deciding on a curriculum?
@abeautifullywreckedlife so was the books inspiration rays arithmetic? Is it basically the same thing? Instead of buying rays primary arithmetic book PLUS the answer keys book.. cm elementary arithmetic has teaching and answers combined right?
I really loved your choices and am thankful for the reminder about A Year of Playing Skillfully!!!
Yay!! We love AYOPS!
I have Summer Of Playing Skillfully. It is really nice and I like it. So do the kids I am using it with.
