What They Don't Tell You About a Midlife Career Change
Ok 👍 number 1 fan this population should listen to this hope it works
Hi, I'm 61 and I retired from my shiftwork job at our local papermill 2 yrs ago and sold our small cleaning business last year. Now I'm considering a career in real estate sales. Thanks for posting! 😊
Awesome! I'm glad you got out of that shift-work job. Sounds like you're on your way to an entirely new career. I'm sure you'll do great!! Keep me posted on your new venture!
I was able to retire at 60 from my state job after 25 years and blessed with another job at a local school 5 min from my home. I hope to stay there for at least 5 years then retire completely at 65. Thank you for your video.
Congratulations on your retirement! It sounds like you’ve set yourself up for a great next chapter. Best of luck with your new job at the school!
59 and looking for a full time job to support myself. Age discrimination is real. Been looking for 2 months. Right hand is crippled so type with one hand. No degree and I’m about to be homeless.
I’m really sorry to hear about your situation. It’s tough out there, but don’t lose hope. There are resources and support systems that can help you find some opportunities tailored to your needs.
Me too am singlemom of 1 daugther i need job as a cleaner/janitress/ am just high school graduate.am 61 years old still healthy.I have valid passport i hope no placement fee from Philippines.
I wonder if your previous employer, to some extent, deliberately created this overload work environment to get you to retire or leave the company. In this way, they bring in younger people to take the places of older ones. I've heard of such practices. Either way, I'm glad that you adjusted, adapted, and are now again happy in your work. I'm 62 and am considering going back to work in some way, because I am bored. I retired very early, but I want to be back in the game somehow. I feel like I still have something to offer, and that it's going to waste.
I've seen that type of tactic as well and I totally get where you're coming from. I've watched companies overload older employees and force them to retire and once they're gone, they find out they need to hire 3 people just to fill the position. Glad all that is behind me! I'm glad to hear you're considering getting back into the workforce! Your experience can definitely make a huge impact, and it's never too late to share your knowledge.
Hello sir, How are you? Do you need a professional UA-cam Thumbnail designer and UA-cam video SEO Expert? Let me know please Thanks
Sounds like truth
Good luck sir you are happy camper.
I am 53. I plan to change careers at 60. I plan on going into the medical field (MRI tech school). My thoughts are that when you work in the medical field no cares how old you are. In fact none of my patients will know that I am new to the field unless I tell them.
Thank you for sharing your journey! It's so encouraging to see someone embrace change and strive for new opportunities. Wishing you all the success in your future career!
Don’t try being a pilot, aviation doesn’t want old people.
Did you get it through referral or online application? Just curious. In a job, I hate and want to make a change. Not great at networking. Introverted to the max.
I went to Flexjobs and completed the online application. I truly understand about needing to make a change and being an introvert as well. .Good luck with the job hunt-hope you find something you actually enjoy!
@@MidlifeReinvent ok. Thanks for the info. Glad to hear you can get a job without a referral. I will definitely check out this site. Have a great day!
Thanks for your video(s). Truly appreciate the encouragement. I've been with my current company for just over 25 years now. I'm currently 59 years old and contemplating a change. I've been in computer / network support here in a variety of roles, but have always been the primary champion of increasing our security stance - many years I was the sole supporter of security. It was seen as only a cost center. Well, eventually attitudes began to change as the inevitable result of a security incident. Suddenly things changed and I was being listened to like never before. Without going into all of it, promises were made that ultimately were not delivered. When the company finally made the decision to onboard a Chief Information Security Officer, I was not even granted an interview. I've had a few meetings with the CISO and I believe he is actually on the right track, though he's going to have immense hurdles attempting to do what needs to be done with zero experience at the position and having spent his entire career in Government. Initially I wanted to help, but as time has passed and more explicit and implicit promises made to me have again been ignored, I've decided it's not worth the aggravation to continue. I've withdrawn my support and no longer provide information / updates regarding my special interests. I've primarily acted as an early warning system given my contacts in numerous other countries and my keen insight for potential exposure. And I can continue for a while b/c it's still good money, but it's literally a DAILY GRIND to continue knowing that mid-upper management is blatantly dishonest. I could take it to the top-level management / ownership, but I feel at some level they're responsible either due to lack of knowledge / interest and / or continued support for those who clearly are not capable or honest. Considering putting myself out for hire as a fractional CISO, wherein I can provide my skills, leadership and expertise in the field to multiple companies remotely and each of them would pay a portion of my fee(s). I'm also considering changing altogether to another field. I have degrees in History and Aerospace Engineering. I also have a background in law, as well as a very creative side in music, art and writing. We'll have 4 separate income sources once retirement age fully arrives. So I just need something to keep me "off the streets" for the next 7 years. Frankly with some of the things I did in my early 20s, I could do pretty much anything and stay afloat. But I'd like to keep my wife and fur babies in the lifestyle to which they're accustomed. I'm going to check out your checklist, but I'm hoping you may have some suggestions for actually narrowing down what I really should be doing - following a "passion" or just finding the best way to pay the bills. Thanks for your help!
I’m 59-year-old woman not married adult children are living another states. I took a job with the county a few years ago thinking it would be a good move because I needed health insurance. I needed paid holidays. Paid vacation sick days things like that and the first two years I worked there I really liked my job and I was really good at it and the county decided to move me and I hated the move. I hated the job and I hated my supervisor. I was very very miserable so I asked for a transfer and I asked for a transfer back to the job that I liked Will transfer but did not put me somewhere else. Now I do have a much better supervisor and it’s an open door policy. That’s the positive but it’s way too much work. There are no boundaries. It’s a young person. Who is my supervisor which I’m really OK with in the sense that I don’t care but it seems like she doesn’t know how to sit boundaries for her employees and so everybody gets away with asking us to do their work And we’re responsible for doing it and we make a mistake. The burden is ours when it really go to somebody else cause we shouldn’t be doing their work out at least that doesn’t work, but I’m 59 years old. I was hoping I’d get some kind of pension. What do I do, I am not. do not have college or any degrees
It sounds like you're in a tough spot, but you’ve still got options! Since your supervisor has an open-door policy, talk to her about the workload and boundary issues. If possible also try to clarify your role, so you’re not stuck doing tasks outside your job description. You might also want to think about looking for other internal positions that might suit you better- don't forget your experience counts, even without a degree. And, if you're thinking about the long-term, maybe explore getting certifications that might help you transition to a less stressful role. Plus, you might want to consider talking to a financial advisor about your pension plan and your future goals. You've already shown that you have resilience, so don't give up!
I dont know what field i want to go into. I've been in the legal field since 2006. Feeling stuckkkk.
If you’ve spent almost 20 years in the legal field and you're thinking about changing careers, your skills are highly transferable. So, without knowing your specific area of expertise, here's some options you might want to consider: - Compliance Officer: Use your legal expertise to help businesses follow regulations, especially in finance or healthcare. - Corporate Trainer: Teach companies about compliance, ethics, or legal topics. - Consulting: Advise businesses on legal or regulatory challenges. - HR Roles: Your knowledge of employment law and conflict resolution makes you a great fit for human resources. - Contract Management: Manage and negotiate business contracts with your legal background. - Policy Analyst: Shape laws and regulations by working with government or think tanks. - Project Management: Your attention to detail and organizational skills transfer well here. - Real Estate: Use your property law knowledge to become an agent or broker. - Mediation: Help resolve disputes outside of court as a mediator. - Writing: Create content for legal blogs, write guides, or even books. There's no doubt that your legal experience opens up ton of doors!
I need to figure this out.
I used to think so. But, if the average lifespan is ~80 or so (plus or minus a few years) I just cannot see myself retiring. Furthermore, I don’t want to spend the last years of my life doing something others want me to do… what the hell?!? It’s my life… what have I got to lose… my life, my friends, my family will not approve? I’m not getting out of here alive, so…
I can’t Thank u ENOUGH..I’m 62 and want to go to Phlebotomy School..I questioned myself over & over. I have a GREAT OUTLET of Nurse Friends.. In which field this news job? Software development, data analyst or digital marketing or something else?
Thanks for stopping by. Currently, data analysis and digital marketing fields are experiencing strong job demand. Although software development is facing a temporary slowdown, it is projected to see a 17% increase in job openings over the next decade.
@@MidlifeReinvent so are you a data analyst using python numpy etc or technical writer only?
Thanks for your question! I wear many hats in the data analytics field, including various types of content creation. I'm curious, what specific aspects of data analysis or technical writing are you most interested in? I might be able to point you toward some resources or future video topics that could be helpful.

Thanks. I'm a retired teacher with an M.A. I've been thinking about tutoring.
That's wonderful to hear! With your background it sounds like the perfect thing for you. I'm sure that with your experience as a teacher and that M.A. you'd definitely make you a fantastic tutor. Thank you for stopping by and commenting!
I'm 51 and can't picture myself retiring in terms of quitting work and sitting around in my recliner all day watching The Price is Right. I like having something to do and some place to go!
It's great to hear that you're looking forward to staying active and engaged in life! Retirement can be whatever we make of it, and it sounds like you've got a fantastic mindset. Thank you for stopping by!!
I went straight to work out of high school and by age 20 received my Journeyman's license as an electrician. As luck would have it I applied for a job at one of the largest Aero Space research facilities in southern California. We had 54 Journeyman Electricians at that facility and a total population of about 15,000 employees total at the plant in Huntington Beach. Mostly scientist and engineers but we also had some production. My job was servicing large proprietary machine tools, escorting people into skiffs and equipment inspections. The last 10 years I was assigned to surveillance and servicing audio and Public Address systems and energy management. None of the work I did translated to anything that was valuable to getting a new job. Eventually my group was down to 11 guys and we had lots of responsibilities other than maintaining the infrastructure of the plant and that included things like heat treat calibration and surveillance. I worked 6 and 7 days a week towards the end and was swimming in money. At age 52 I was laid off and went back into construction for a couple of years and just gave up. I'm still looking for work in something other than construction but just haven't found anything. It's hot where I live and the only real jobs are residential work or installing Solar PV's. No thanks. Skin cancer sucks and so does falling off roofs.
It seems to me that Americans are nothing , but what they do for work, the deals, the career possibilities, but next to no paid holidays. Quality of life counts
Working 'til you drop - whatever floats your boat as they say.
❤ quite optimistic 🎉
Thanks for stopping by! Hope you found it informative and encouraging!
Nearly 61 here and I have an interview on Tuesday for yet another career change. Worked 27 years in my previous job and realised I was just sleepwalking to my grave and with no ambition apart from taking a pay check. My last job was a complete change from the previous 27 years - designing and creating interactive learning packages and e-learns but I got requested into a new department where I have been twiddling my thumbs in frustration. Too young to retire and too old to put up with that type of nonsense so I applied for yet another career change which takes me back to my first sentence.
I'm happy to hear that you're taking charge of your career. I can honestly relate to your statement "too young to retire and too old to put up with that type of nonsense". I really want to encourage you to keep pursuing what truly fits you the best and fulfills you. Best of luck with your interview on Tuesday!
So glad I found your video! Liked and subscribed! I totally can relate to your concerns mentioned 😊
I'm so glad you found the video helpful! Welcome to the community-excited to have you on board!
I’m 51 hoping to end the rat race by 60 with above $1M. I know money is a liability to be exchanged for assets with real value like real estate (properties for rent) stocks (dividends) bonds (interest) But, what is it with bitcoin? I hear a lot about it and I'd love to diversify.
I was a stay at Home mom with no money in my IRA or any savings of my own, which was scary at 53 years of age. Three years ago I got a part time job and save everything I make. After 3 years, I am 56 yo and have put $9,000 in an IRA and $40,000 in my portfolio with CFA, Dorian j Townsend. Since the goal of getting a job was to invest for retirement and NOT up my lifestyle, I was able to scale this quickly to $150,000. If I can do this in a year, anyone can.
This is a Cool video, you work for 40yrs to have $1M in your retirement, meanwhile some people are putting just $25K into trading from just few months ago and now they are multimillionaires
Great reviews! I will definitely give her a try with my $10,000 and see how it goes. Having a reliable source of information and support can make a big difference in one's financial journey.
4 years ago, I was living paycheck to paycheck, working 40 hours a week. I was a high school dropout with a GED and had a 489 credit score, along with an eviction, repossession, and collections. I got into real estate but encountered unqualified clients who couldn't qualify for a mortgage due to their credit. I found this home-based business here on UA-cam, and it just made sense.
Hello , I am very interested. As you know, there are tons of investments out there and without solid knowledge, I can't decide what is best. Can you explain further how you invest and earn or reach her?
I love your spirit, wisdom, energy, honesty, and your point of view! I enjoyed this video immensely!
@AnnaSzabo Thank you so much for your very kind words! I'm really glad that you enjoyed my video and that it resonated with you!
Wow. The corporate world is where dreams go to die. That is so true for many people stuck in the rat race.
Unfortunately, it's a tough reality for so many, but recognizing it for what it really is the first step towards making a change.
Very inspiring, thank you
Thanks a ton! Super glad you found it inspiring!
Thank you.
You're very welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
I'm 76. I did IT contracts until I was 74. Now I write about AI.
Thank you for sharing your experience! Your journey is a fantastic example of how we can continue to evolve and contribute at any age. Transitioning from IT contracts to writing about AI shows that there's always room for new passions and pursuits. It's really inspiring to see how you've adapted your expertise to stay engaged with truly cutting-edge technology. Your story highlights that our skills and interests can lead us to exciting new chapters, even later in life. Thank you so much for adding your voice to this conversation and demonstrating another great way to approach our later years with purpose and curiosity! Awesome!
❤❤❤❤
AI can do that too.
@@nobbynob-mq2rn I use AI to generate a lot of my text about AI.
That's cool. But I retired last year at age 56 and I have no regrets. You don't necessarily need a job to feel fulfilled. I do standup comedy as a hobby; I am trying to improve on the piano; I'm writing a play; and I still work on software projects. My previous job was as a software developer, but working on hobby projects on my own timelines is far more rewarding than doing it for work. Of course, I'm incredibly lucky to have the financial resources in place for early retirement. But whatever makes you happy, go for it!
Thank you for sharing your journey! Your case beautifully illustrates that there's more than one path forward after having a traditional career. You're absolutely right that happiness looks different for everyone, and you're indeed fortunate to have the financial stability to choose early retirement. Your story is a great reminder that whether it's a new career or some type of creative pursuits in retirement, the key is finding what really brings joy and purpose to our lives. Thanks for adding to the conversation and showing another fantastic way to approach this chapter of life!
I am 63 and my last two corporate experiences have been bad. There was so much dishonesty and disrespect and drama all around. Very distressing. I will hit all of my retirement financial goals in six months. Just trying to stick it out until then. Since my mid-50s, I have found the job market to be discriminatory in opportunities and pay. I look forward to playing guitar, walking at the beach and in the woods, becoming fluent in Spanish, and more.
Thank you for sharing your experience. It sounds like working in corporate roles has been very challenging for you. Sadly, too many of us face discrimination in the job market. It's a reminder that we need to work towards a fairer environment for everyone. And congratulations on being close to achieving your retirement goals; that’s a great accomplishment! Thank you again for your comment. I wish you all the best as you transition to this new and rewarding chapter of your life.
Your story is impressive and inspirational. However, it is not typical. Keep in mind that so few people have your talent and intelligence, and adaptability. Most people past 50 don't have the ability to learn new skills. You are a talented engineer. Most people have nothing to offer another employer after many years in a corporate/management/bureaucratic role
Yikes. I hope you’re not a hiring manager. Such blatant ageism
Vincent, I disagree. Most 'old dogs' will stop a bad habit the minute the doctor tells them they have cancer! Motivation is the issue, not intelligence. Go watch some really elderly people, over 80 and ask yourself how you want life to look between now and then. Renee Landers is 73 and she started weight lifting in her 60's and has the body of a very fit 30-something!
Thank you so much for your kind words and for taking the time to share your thoughts. I truly appreciate your perspective. It's true that everyone's journey is unique. Indeed we all have different experiences and challenges. While my story may not be typical per se, I firmly believe that talent and intelligence are not fixed traits. Many people, regardless of age, have the potential to learn new skills and adapt to new situations. The concept of a growth mindset, suggests that our abilities can develop with motivation, effort, and perseverance. This has been a guiding principle for me. I understand that transitioning to another career from long-term roles in corporate, management, or bureaucratic environments can seem daunting. However, I've seen firsthand how many individuals in their 50s, 60s, and beyond have successfully reinvented themselves by embracing new opportunities and continuously learning. Sometimes, the wealth of experience you gain over the years can be incredibly valuable in new work environments and contexts. Thank you again for your thoughtful comment. I hope my journey can inspire others to explore their own potential, no matter where they are in life.
I spent 3 years at General Electric in my 20s and couldn't understand what the point was. Although I worked for the medical imaging division, the work was deeply meaningless to me. I spent a couple of years struggling to find a job that fulfilled me and ended up teaching. I still love my job passionately at 64 and have never understood why people wanted to retire early. I do have many interests and hobbies outside teaching and maybe one day I'll retire. But sitting around waiting for my 10 000 remaining days to pass on a cruise ship sounds horrible.I'd rather be teaching.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and insights. It's wonderful to hear that you've found such fulfillment and passion in teaching. It's a testament to the importance of finding work that deeply resonates with our personal values and interests. It's inspiring to see how you've embraced your role as an educator and you continue to find joy in it while balancing it with your other interests and hobbies. There's no doubt that each of us has different ideas about what retirement should look like. But for many of us, continuing to work is more rewarding than traditional notions of retirement. It's all about what brings purpose and joy to our lives. Thank you again for your thoughtful comment. It's encouraging to hear about your experiences and perspective, and I'm sure it will deeply resonate with many others who are searching for meaning and fulfillment in their own lives.
Welp, better late than never. It's quite surprising a man of your age is hired on these days. Good for you. Of course keep in mind that after age 60 you typically only have 1,000 healthy weeks left. If you ever dreamed of travel, see the world, explore somewhere you might be giving away the youth of your old age to your employer. But hey, if this is really what you want to do in your last healthy days on earth then good.
@@joem.7621 Hey thanks for your comment! Yes, getting hired at my age could be seen as surprising. I suppose it really depends on your skill set. The very reason why I chose to change careers was exactly to your point. I didn’t want to give the best years till full retirement to my previous employer. My current role allows me to travel anywhere I desire and work from anywhere. And, it’s merely a stepping stone towards having my own business that will provide the physical and financial freedom my wife and I need to travel wherever I want. And, I can work as much or little as I please well into old age. Again, thank you for your comment!
Where's the link for the remote jobs?
Hey, thanks for asking. You'll find it in the description as well as by clicking the "i" in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. But, I'll place it here as well. ua-cam.com/video/OIkhE2qJF2Y/v-deo.html
Monday morning and I'm dreading going in to work as a handyman. Reflection on what lights me up in a new career but still on zombie mode as you put it. I'm also 63 but feel 30 and wasting away. Thanks for the inspiration.
Hey, I really understand! It's tough when work feels like a drag. Remember, it's never too late to start exploring and find a job that fits you much better. You got this!
Hey Garrett. With your handyman skills is there a passion you have like cars, gardening, interior design, woodworking etcetera? I know that there's lots of work for people modifying cars, not just mechanics but interior wood detailing, hand finishing stuff. Go for it in parallel with your current work and reduce the boring stuff in a few steps.
@@peacefulsleep7052 Thanks but looking at the big picture it's time to hang up the tools. Shoulders issues. More than anything else my spirit is telling me to move into the non profit arena.
I'm with you. I'm following F.I.N.E. or financial independence new endeavor. 😊
Awesome, I’ll check it out. And, thank you for your comment!
Hello. I'm 63 years young and considering a career change. I work as a handyman in New York. I have zero passion for the job. I've always prided myself for doing a good job no matter what it was but now I'm just going through the motions. I've subscribed to your channel and could really use some insight. Thanks
Hey, thank you for subscribing! I know what it's like when you really need a change. I hope that I can provide a bit of inspiration to help you along your journey. You're never too old to pursue a new career!
I switched to my careers at 50 I was a machinist now I'm a caregiver I have 14 more months to retire
Thank you for sharing your story! It’s inspiring to see someone take such a big step in their career. Wishing you all the best in your final months before retirement!
Hi, I'm 61, retired from our local papermill 2 yrs ago and sold our small cleaning company last year and though I'm drawing a pension, I would like to do something interesting to make some extra money for fun. I'm thinking of getting into real estate sales. I enjoyed dealing with people. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for sharing your experience with us.
Thank you for watching. I hope you found it encouraging and helpful!
Wow congrats I'm glad you persevered
Thank you so much! It was definitely a bit of a rollercoaster, but it was worth it.
Dude you're so cool. You have such good skills. Seems you've had a great career. And im glad you soared when you took the jump. 🦘
Hey, thanks you for your kind words and encouragement, it means a lot to me!
I'm 60+ and it's not to late for a change but after investing 2 years in training, I learned that if you're over 40 nobody wants to give you that chance.
That's certainly true for lots of companies and it's definitely worse in certain business sectors. But, don't give up you can find meaningful work. I really hope you find something soon. If you're interested. I created a video on where to start looking. ua-cam.com/video/OIkhE2qJF2Y/v-deo.html
We still get caught up applying for jobs when we may do better at contracting our skills out and working for ourselves. Hire yourself. No rejections guaranteed!😉
Totally agree! It's all about taking charge and making things happen on your own terms.
