Algonquin's Western Uplands Trail #algonquin #hiking #backpacking #Hikingwithadog
Hiking Algonquin's Western Uplands trailover 7 days with my pup Myles and friend Ann. It was Myles first long distance hike. Usual wet muddy spots and rainy days but a beautiful hike none the less. Even came within 30 feet of a bull and cow moose. A special place to visit.

    I love the simplicity and the price of an opinel its like the Mora companion of the folding world, extremely cheap yet a joy to use and own, it does what it does well, slicing cuts and little jobs. I have some expensive folders but I dont tend to carry them half as much my cheap ones.

    I like the carbon metal versions. A carbon knife for me I can sharpen it razor sharp in about a minute. Must stainless steel when I swear I have to sit there for an hour and I still don’t get it sharp. Carbon metal is just so super easy to sharpen for people like me!!!

    Smart man! I love seeing wedges used when folding knives are involved. Fixed blades work for battoning but folders, rarely. Great review mate, I enjoyed it. I’ve only ever seen snow once. About 40 years ago. It was so cold. Once was enough.😉 I use my stainless Opinels for food and carbon for everything else. Both work well.

    Good job. 👍🏼👍🏼 Flint and Steel method is my favorite way to make fire. Blew my first fire when I was 8 years old (1967) when my Cub Scout Troop had the fire booth at the Scout-O-Rama. We made fire every half hour for three days. There’s just something about using flint and steel to make a fire. It’s like a meditation…

    You actually dull your knife more when you sharpen it with imprecise technique, so of course it will be less sharp than factory edge. Also some of these knives might need a little edge reprofiling, they may come with a different edge, and need a bit more work, maybe even with a file, and then a stone, to get them super slicey. So a simple test can't settle whether stainless of carbon is more slicey. The real difference should be quite small, with modern steels

    I'll never understand why people keep using the ferro rod to start a fire EVERY TIME! To me the ferro rod would be a last resort, only to be used when I've exhausted all of my other choices, lighter, matches, magnifying glass, etc.

      Horses for courses, I guess. Lighters can suck in -30C, matches are hard to use without taking off mittens, and it's not always sunny . I generally default to a Bic in most cases though. Storm matches and the blast match are pretty sweet too. My first go-too in minus stupid degrees at 0 dark stupid O'clock (if the bic doesn't work) is steel wool and a 9 volt battery. If more heat is needed, magnesium filings off the end of my snow shoes can be added.

    • @georgeb.wolffsohn30

      @@briang530 I have arthritis in both hands such that using a bic even under ideal conditions is practically impossible the ferro rod is less of a fine motor skill.

    • @rodnyg7952
      @rodnyg7952 8 місяців тому

      exactly, a ferro rod is good to have, but I'd never use it unless I had to. A butane lighter or stormproof matches work just fine, even in windy or cold conditions

    Opinel are for finer working, for batoning the blade is way to narrow. And the blade is not attached sturdy enough to the grip. Opinels basical depend on there cutting ability, everything that includes force is baaaad. I have an Sissipukko for rough and an opinel for finer stuff. Usual two opinel, they have near no weight so if you loose one who cares.
