A Soap for Kelley's Rainbow | Making Cold Process Soap
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
We recently won sponsor's choice in the Soap Challenge Club, making it possible for us to upgrade our soap cutting equipment. We purchased the Hercules soap cutting station from Custom Craft Tools with the gift card we won. Because one of our main goals is to give, we wanted the first soap we cut with our tool to go straight into our community. We reached out to Kelley's Rainbow and asked if they would be able to use a donation of soap. We collaborated on the style, and I got to work on it. This is the soap made for them, and it was the first soap cut using our new soap cutter. I'm so thankful to have this opportunity and ability to provide small tokens like this whenever we can. Thank you, Custom Craft Tools and the Soap Challenge Club for making this possible for me, and thank you, Kelley's Rainbow, for allowing us the opportunity to give back.

**What I would have done differently with this batch:
This fragrance does not behave badly. However, I should have added it just past emulsion and soaped a smidge cooler. It’s an amazing fragrance, but I have to be a bit more specific about how I use it to make it work a bit better than this. :)
I have made much more successful swirls with this scent, but I got a bit carried away during this soaping session and had to do a little extra work to make it work out.

I oven process my soaps to prevent cracks from forming in the top of the soap as well as to ensure a full and even gel. I use about a 1.8:1 water:lye ratio for most soaps, and that helps prevent issues with overheating.
*How I CPOP: First I preheat the oven to 170°F. Then I turn the oven off, turn the oven light on, place the soap in the oven, close the oven door, and leave it in overnight. I don’t spray the top or cover it in the oven. We soapers all do things a little differently, and this works very well for me.

It has been far too long since I have played with pretty designs in soap. This is my entry for June for the Soap Challenge Club. I am very late and out of order sharing now, but this is my entry for the Soap Challenge Club for January 2022. January’s challenge was to create a design using hanger swirls. There were several options to choose from, but I wanted to revisit the butterfly swirl. I attempted this one other time, and it has been a couple of years. Does yogurt lower the ph balance of soap? Would i need to addlemon juice to help lower the ph balance?

    • @JandWSoaps
      @JandWSoaps 5 місяців тому

      Great question! Neither lemon juice nor yogurt would alter the pH. The lemon juice has citric acid which would interact with the lye, freeing up more of the fats. So it would increase the SF a little but not alter the pH. The pH of soap is just going to be a little on the higher side, usually around 9-10.

    • @tricieb.5921
      @tricieb.5921 5 місяців тому

      @@JandWSoaps Okay, is there any way to lower the ph balance? I tried using lye soap on my face but was too strong.

    • @JandWSoaps
      @JandWSoaps 5 місяців тому

      @@tricieb.5921 if there’s a way to lower it further, I’m unaware of it. The last time I looked into it, even Dr. Kevin Dunn hadn’t found soap with a lower pH. Soap is just going to have a higher pH. Synthetic detergents can offer a lower pH though and are a good option for many people who need a lower pH.

    When you first blend your mica what do you mix it with and at what amounts?

    • @JandWSoaps
      @JandWSoaps 8 місяців тому

      I go by the manufacturer suggestions for quantities. With mica, you can often use more with little to no bad effects, but it is possible to add too much and cause staining. I’ve never had that problem, but I’ve heard others have in large excess amounts. I use oil reserved from the batch to pre mix them. That way I’m not increasing the SF. Some people use addition oils, which add to the SF some, but it’s personal preference.

    Well I am getting ducks and geese on my farm so when I cook them I will save the grease for this. I will try to use rosemary and lavender from my garden to sent it and food coloring. But I like how you made it multi color like that too.

    • @JandWSoaps
      @JandWSoaps 8 місяців тому

      Herbs may not provide much scent. Essential oils and fragrances usually provide much better scent retention. I have read where some people make their own essential oils. Maybe that's a possibility for you as well. Just be sure to go by the IFRA so you don't use too much. I think it's an amazing idea to use as much of the animal as possible. No sense in wasting it when you can put it to good use. 😃 Thank you so much for your comment and kind words.
