    Do you bottom out when playing harder hits? I have a drumeo quiet pad and one side is foam but thinner than this. So when I play with more volume (and I usually play with heavy sticks) the foam gets all squished and the stick hits the wood underneath, making a "not quiet" sound. So I consider buying this or meinl marshmellow pad.

    • @derekscherzerberlin
      @derekscherzerberlin День тому

      Hey! Yes, I have the same problem with the Drumeo quiet pad (you will find also a review on my channel). With the Zultan pad you don´t have this problem and I think you won´t have it with the Meinl pad. I have only the smaller version of the marshmallow pad, but the foam is very thick and I´ve never had this problem that you will hear the stick hitting the wood under the foam. BUT: the big difference is the rebound and the sound! The Meinl pad has more rebound! And the Meinl pad is quieter! With the Zultan pad you have more volume, but also more stick definition (which I like a lot in combination with less rebound!). Hope that helps?

    For what it’s worth, Jimmy Marinos of The Romantics played open handed. I actually do both. When I first started at 18, I was self taught so no one told me “the right way”. I just started switching back and forth because it was fun. Now, I play both but I prefer open handed.

    I am a happy open-handed and right-handed drummer. I started with no teacher, and landed with this style, just because crossing hands seemed so stupid and uncomfortable. ;) [right now I practice a lot to lead more fills with the left hand, I don't like right-hand automatism]

    • @derekscherzerberlin
      @derekscherzerberlin Місяць тому

      Hey! Welcome to the Club ;-) So you´re the same "hybrid" than me? Right-handed playing on a right-handed setup with open position? For me it still works until today! Do you also play Jazz with two ride cymbals (crossing the arms playing the ride cymbal on the right side)? Best wishes from Berlin!

    • @odolany
      @odolany Місяць тому

      @@derekscherzerberlin I keep my biggest ride on the right and switch hands when needed (and it's a fat Z. K 22'' -- I don't want it mounted high ;) ). Not much of a jazz person, and I know my hi-hat swing is clearly worse than right driving... oh well :/ Plus, I noticed one more difference, when I side-stick with right, I have it between hi-hat and toms (while you have it closer to body). This requires maybe a bit unusual snare mike placement in concert and recordings, but engineers handle that well so far. ;)

    • @derekscherzerberlin
      @derekscherzerberlin Місяць тому

      @@odolany Yeah, I´ve also tried the rim click with the postiotion you describe. It didn´t work for me, because it´s not so much space between my small tom, the ride (on my left) and the Hihat. But if it works for you! Then it´s great 🙂 Thank you for letting me know! best wishes! Derek

I am mostly a wood tip player, but there’s nothing wrong with having nylon tips to bring out a different sound. 😁 Now the sizes I like are 14 1516 and 17 😁 I also love lacquer on my drumsticks now I have had problems with sound percussion drumsticks.
