I finally understand the meaning of the hair in the end. And the hair is gifted right after jerome says "i lent you my body, you lent me you dream." Its debated what the hair means, but i think it is Jerome's way of going with vincent to space. The entire movie focuses on vincent using jerome as a "borrowed ladder". But irony has it that jerome used vincent as a "borrowed ladder", not just to imagine the dream, but he physically/literally piggybacked onto vincent and was elevated into space with vincent to share that dream as it was realized. Jerome said he was going on a trip too, and i always thought his trip was to the next life, but figuratively, he meant he was going with vincent.

So, a man with an IQ score so high it is literally impossible to measure and a face of Jude Law decides to kill himself because of a disability. Instead of becoming the next Stephen Hawking, for instance, or trying to fix his back. What a "brilliant", disabled-positive writing, conveys perfectly the author's narrow-mindness. The fact that this film is regarded by some as "misunderstood underrated chef d'oeuvre" is what really makes me sad upon watching this scene.

Revisiting this 10 years later. How has the technology changed? If the Government agencies including Planned Parenthood got access to a new technology that could weed out imperfections in our DNA. What would they do with it? Wipe out all diseases? Create a Superior children for those who have the money? Who would determine what imperfections need to be eliminated? How far would they go?

(Winter´s Tale) No life is more important than the other and nothing happens without a reason. Nothing. What if we are all part of a great plan that we will eventually understand. And one day, when we have accomplished what we alone are capable of, we will ascend and be reunited with those we have loved the most, in an eternal embrace. What if we become stars? (Winter's Tale)

If you can literally build a child like a damn build a bear, I assume that most likely cybernetic limbs would be as/if not better then normal limbs, and even if they were expensive to shit, the guy was an expert swimmer, so he could have probably paid for it

I wish Jerome hadn’t committed suicide and had learned the lesson in life that he needed to learn, which is that there is much much more to life than coming first in a professional pursuit. There is relationships, friendship, love, beauty, sacrifice, art, science, nature, food, sex, pursuit of justice.. there are endless ways to live a meaningful life. I wish Jerome had grown to see how amazing and beautiful life can be even as a crippled silver medalist. He could’ve just bought a new identity and lived meaningfully somewhere as an in-valid .

Watched this again the other night. Great movie, still holds up even after 24 years, I'd actually say better than even the most revered sci-fi movies of the 90s including The Matrix. I think it's because: 1) the movie visually has a very clean, streamlined, and down-to-earth style and set design/costumes that don't scream it's made in the 90s (stylish, slick, but not too contemporary) - it's pretty timeless; 2) the story is still topical and relevant; 3) the characters and their motivations are clear, understandable and universal; 4) the actors are all great in their roles and it's actually a hell of a cast - Ethan Hawke, Jude Law, Uma Thurman, Alan Arkin, Tony Shalhoub and Ernest Borgnine (I wonder how they managed to get this legend to play the bit part he plays, but he adds a lot to the movie just by being there); 5) the music is great and again, not particularly inherent to the decade the movie was made in; 6) the movie includes very good life lessons - never give up - if you put in all possible effort to achieve something, you'll probably get there one way or another; sometimes you can't rely even on your family for support; social hierarchy matters; we all put on an act one way or another in front of others; act and behave as you want to be seen; we all need support - Vincent needed Jerome and vice versa, Vincent wouldn't achieve his goal alone; and ultimately - no matter who we are and where we are, we all have the same self-doubt and dreams. The ending is poignant and meaningful. The mission director, the genetically superior wise old man was willing to commit a lowlife crime just to satisfy his own vanity, thus proving he is not as perfect after all. The in-valid and lesser Vincent outworked everyone and proved he's in fact more resilient and driven than those genetically superior to him. Yes, he cheated, but he didn't betray anyone, he didn't kill anyone, he didn't hurt anyone (outside of punching the cop which was understandable considering how close to his goal he was), he had a moral compass and dignity. Jerome for all his smarts and ability wasn't able to live a life without legs - basically, just like Vincent refused to accept his own physical inadequacies as defining his fate, Jerome ultimately let his physical inadequacies define his. And Irene finds out that your true feelings can lie outside where the society tells you they should, which is such an important lesson that so many people (including myself I have to add unfortunately) fail to truly understand and follow. The ending is full of rather radical decisions and acts on all fronts - Vincent is radical the entire film and the ending just confirms it, Jerome's suicide, the doctor letting Vincent pass the test, Irene letting go of her preconceived notions about relationships, the mission director committing murder. Jerome's suicide truly pushes the movie and its ending over the edge for me. It's such a tragic, sad but entirely understandable way for his story to end and he did it like a boss - he helped someone else achieve his dream, he did something good and meaningful. And he also gave one last middle finger to the system that failed him - in a world where physical perfection became the deciding point of where you end up in life, when this notion turn against him and he himself suddenly understood what it means to feel and be seen as an invalid (quite literally in his case), he decided to help one person seen as invalid by society from birth achieve something the society deems appropriate only for the "valid" people like Jerome was until his accident. Because if valid people like him can become invalid seemingly just like that, then there is no reason why invalid people couldn't become valid just like that as well. Jerome's invalidity was for a lifetime, Vincent's validity only for a while, but the meaning of those things to both of them, to their lives, is pretty much of the same importance.
