Happy 60th!🎉
Hi Rob, The school children were singing a song in celebration of the Dia dos Reis Magos (The Magi Kings Day/The Three Wise Men or Magi) which is celebrated on Jan 6 (12 days after Christmas Day) and also you are right it is also called Epiphany. It is a Christian Holiday that celebrates the Three Wise Men or Magi who visited baby Jesus after flowing the Star of Bethlehem. It commemorates the biblical story of the Magi bringing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to Jesus. Hence the kids wearing homemade crowns for this celebration. I am very glad they are still keeping the old traditions... In the old times adults wearing costumes would go door to door singing the "Dia dos Reis Magos" songs... and in return they would receive gifts and it was considerate to be a blessing to the homes visited. Rob, the carros de cestos (the wicker baskets on skids) were not the only ancient transportation on Madeira. They used to have the Hammock (or rede), the wicker toboggans, ox carts, the donkey route and the Monte Railway... Hope this helps to understand the history and traditions of Madeira Island. Actually, the toboggans were first a way to transport the ice from Poço da Neve in Pico do Areeiro to the hotels ,hospital and the rich families

@@twoamericansandadog7212 Not much piri-piri chicken... Not into spicy foods. The Portuguese brought the pir-piri (Pilipili in Swahili) peppers to Africa. Fernando (Nando's sauce) was developed in Mozambique and became world famous. The Madeirans brought Rice with red beans to the Caribbeans and today is a National dish of Jamaica (Rice and peas (red beans)) and other Caribbeans countries Madeirans brought to Hawaii the Malassadas (fried dough used in Carnival time). Today they called it Hawaii Malasadas Or Hawaiian Donuts. Indeed, the Madeirans never forget their and/or the ancestors birthplace. If you listen to the Madeiran Anthem (I can't send the link but you can Google it in English) but I will send you a translation of some of the verses (It is pure truth in our hearts): "For this World beyond Madeira your name continues In your longing children That beyond borders Show themselves proud of you. For this World beyond, Madeira, we will honour your history In the path of labour We will struggle Will reach Your well-being and glory." Madeirans are everywhere in the world like seagulls. Many Madeirans and descendants live in Fall River and Boston, MA (3.43% speak Portuguese in MA). I have cousins who live in California and Arizona. My children and grandchildren are Canadian Born and my lovely daughter-in-law (Romanian-Jewish) love Madeira and Continental Portugal. They visited Madeira this last August. They wanted to stay in Madeira. So, It is in our blood to never forget Madeira.❤❤❤ Hopefully, with your videos will help many Americans (the good ones) decide to visit Madeira. There is a Parish in West of Funchal called Casa Branca (White House) and many years ago there was lots of Americans and British living in this area's villas.
