I raised this Painted Lady butterfly from a caterpillar found on an artemisia plant in my garden. I had inadvertently brought it inside the house on a flower bouquet I had made for Mother's Day. A friend at the table spotted the caterpillar amongst the flowers. I placed it in my mesh butterfly habitat and provided it with fresh artemisia cuttings to feed on. This is a butterfly that I have been caring for since she was a tiny caterpillar. She hatched from an egg on a milkweed cutting I had brought into the house. Hi judy-b! Nice to see you on here! Yes, the abdomen is huge when they first emerge - it is filled with fluid that then gets pumped into the wings so they can expand. If you look closely at the abdomen in this video you can see it undulating as it pumps the fluid to the wings. When the wings are at full size, the butterfly expels any excess fluid. When you see a fully formed butterfly you will notice that the abdomen is quite narrow.
That is the coolest thing ever. I'm sure she was aware you were there!

Hi Sumati! Sorry for my late response - I didn't realize I had any comments until now! It truly is awesome - I am obsessed with these butterflies. I've got a new batch of caterpillars and ready to watch the whole cycle all over again.

My dad is full of great stories! It's just too bad he didn't speak enough English to have a real conversation with them... imagine how cool it would have been to chat with the Pointer Sisters in the early 70s!
