I caught the card collecting bug in grade school after ordering a handful of football cards from one of those school book fair purchases. I was hooked after that and focused on buying packs and singles to complete all the topps football sets being sold at my LCS. If the set had a checklist, you'd better believe I was checking off each card along the way hoping to fully complete each 396 card set back in the late 80's.
I paused collecting for a while and got back in to it in 2008 as I looked to buy up wax packs and boxes I used to open, and also build runs of vintage football sets.
About 10 years later, I sold off most of those wax boxes, took a break, and jumped back in during 2022 / 2023 and have focused mostly (again) on wax packs, boxes, rack packs and mostly vintage football and baseball. Looking forward to sharing my collection and observations!

Video #21 - Flipping Thru Some Old Junk Wax Era Albums
I found a few of these albums from the early 90's and decided to show some old cards I had saved in these mini albums. Lots from the early 90's football and baseball.

Gave a video like. Great card of Hall of Famer, Ernie Banks! 1971 topps is one of my favorite sets of all time. Thanks for sharing and congrats on that addition to the collection!
@@Hodges1455 thanks for the comment and yep love the black borders
First pack of cards I ever bought (and the only pack I bought until 1982) was 1980 Topps Football when I was 6 years old. I only remember that the gum was disappointing, but at least I got a Sammy White card! Not the best design by any means, but the Payton is my favorite card from that set with the photo taken probably from the Pontiac Silverdome. Great video! Thanks for posting!
@@tytietjen6727 funny how the gum memories stay with you!
Great video Tony! I enjoy deep dives on sets and how people feel about the design.
@@EverydayCardCollector-Jason thanks! I plan to do all the 80’s sets in good time!
The Rams player on Mike Phipps card is Fred Dryer. This is a really nice set and one I'm glad to have. Thanks for sharing and I hope you have a great day.
Thanks Tony! Glad we cut through the swathe of junk mail! Looking forward to watching more of your videos.
I miss the days, when if you got an insert it was a big deal. I remember mowing grass all day to earn 10 dollars for a couple packs.
89 topps is my favorite football set of the 80's. I wish the Deion, Barry and Troy were in the main set. The set would be epic if they were. I love the design for some reason.
@@RL3sports yeah crazy how they were in Score main set but not Topps
Great video, and I love the Payton rookie. Thanks for sharing and I hope you have a great day.
Glad the Payton stayed in your collection. I can see those 2 years abroad brought you back to a larger collecting world making it harder to collect as oppose to when you left where it was that years set and done. Can you imagine if your years away led you to cards as they are now? That would be a shock to the system. 😀
@@sportscardsd-tor it would be like back to the future where the entire world is different
The algorithm got it right for once! Love the video, and think you did a great job. While Team Pennysleever admires your ability to not open those boxes, we are rippers all the way. Those 1980s rack packs are very tempting.
@@ThePennysleever then go buy some rack packs and rip to your hearts content. Smh
Good first video man! I’ve been itching to do the same, just not there yet. Good luck with the channel!!
Was the logo late 60's early 70's?
They are logos from 70’s and 80’s topps football packaging
@TonyTalksCards very cool!
How refreshing ......Not a Screaming Ignoramus Influencer.
I’ll try not to be!
@@TonyTalksCards Doesn't seem that it is in your blood. You are a true honest collector who loved the idea of cards and sets and teams.
Football is my favorite and being a set builder I liked the fact that they were smaller in number size and easier to complete 🏈👍
@@RayJohnson-ds8hx yep I was able to get 396 cards faster than 792 for sure! At least in the 80’s…
My team is the Orioles. I remember buying a plastic batting helmet of theirs when I was about 9. I really liked the colors and logo. My Dad told me that they were having a really good year, so that sold me on it. That year they lost to the Pirates in the world seriTV. I was hooked. As a kid I played shortstop in little League because of Cal Ripken Jr. I also remember watching a lot of Cubs games on WGN and some Braves games on tbs when we first got cable tv. Great memories, great times.
Thanks for sharing
January 26th 1986 is one of the greatest days in sports history! Go Bears! Although as I am typing this we just lost a heartbreaking game to the Packers, of course.
Congratulations and good luck. Hopefully I’ll follow in your foot steps in a year to a year and a half.
@@jon-eriksuermann9844 good luck!
Cool video. I love the 1978 Topps football set. Thinking of all the wrappers I threw away as a kid makes me sick. Thanks for sharing.
@@rickbingham3907 yeah who would have thought to save those?
Hello. Really enjoyed your video. Very similar to my story. My team is the Broncos. First time I saw them was in the 1978 Super Bowl against the cowboys. They have been my team ever since. And in the early eighties I received a Bronco helmet for Christmas very similar to your Bear's helmet. I do still have that helmet. I actually autographed it so that one of these days when I am gone one of my kids can have my autographed Bronco helmet that I've had since I was a young kid. Keep up the good work. Thanks.
@@rickbingham3907 thanks your comment and sharing your story!
I’ve never even seen the sell sheets. So cool! Thanks for showing! I was going to pick up a full unopened wax box of 1982 Topps (my favorite) several years ago, but never pulled the trigger. So I only have a single unopened pack.
@@tytietjen6727 I like the design of 82 as well with the helmet in the corner of the cards
You’ve got a great start, Tony!
I'm glad this video was on my front page today. Welcome to the cardmunity! You did a great job with an introduction video and you seem like a on camera natural and a lot more comfortable than I was in my first video. As for the National, there is always a huge UA-camr gathering organized by Mike from Baseball Collector. I went to my first National this year in Cleveland and there was over 300 of us at the gathering.
@@3D80sKid I’m definitely looking forward to meeting more collectors! Thanks for the comment!
I agree with you, Tony. We are around the same age and “collecting baseball cards” is like saying “I would like a coke” where I am from. It doesn’t mean you want a Coca Cola but that you want a soda. Collecting baseball cards is the generic term in my mind for what we do. Great question!
The final year cards of some of these legends are underrated gems because they show the entire career statistics on the back. Great stuff, Tony!
@@coldouglasmortimer1670 yep I like those last cards a ton and may go after a few bigger names and their last cards bc the rookies are out of my league at the moment!
Great idea to get those cello packs of your guy on top. Loving the channel!
I love this 87 set. It was my first year into collecting cards and just brings back a flood of memories. Thanks for the trip down memory lane! And those box bottoms! Wow! The Jerry Rice looks like it’s from the same sequence as the base card. Very cool!
Just subscribed.
@@kendoss2348 thanks appreciate it!
New sub. I also collect wax boxes. Just picked up an 85 donrus box this week. 85 topps is on my list but they're pricey.
@@BZARZAGZA they sure are
Gave a video like. I always use the term baseball cards as well, even though I collect all sports cards. Have a great weekend.
Im the same way. When i tell people i collect football cards, they look at me like im speaking a different language. Saying that i collect baseball cards was easier, but i felt like i was lying. I tell people i collect sports memorabilia now. Its all encompassing.
Baseball cards is kind of a universal term. They were the most popular and have the longest history. I’ve always said baseball cards too even though I collect all cards.
@@MrJmangini glad I’m not alone! Thanks
Thanks for starting the channel, Tony! Best of luck. This sounds like it’s right in my wheelhouse!
Nice shoutouts. I believe i found you through Mangini. Interaction between both channels is key to getting more views amd comments. I hane some guys who haven't missed a comment on a video in 5 plus years and i respect them back. I say sports cards. But when i say baseball card shop i mean all sports. Ha. Thanks for sharing.
@@vintagecardssteve8582 thanks for leaving a note!

Some heater unopened packs in the back there, can’t wait to see more.
Congrats on joining the YT ranks, I’ve been on for a little over a year and it’s been a blast!
That’s cool! Never seen those before! Very cool! I have recently started collecting wax wrappers of baseball Topps! I have a decent run from a bunch of buddies here on the YT!
Hey! yeah, I love the empty (or unopened wax). I really enjoy the artwork and memories from when I was collecting!
We are Bear fans too! We are a charter franchise.
Great packs Tony! I tend to only go for racks and cellos, but I might have to start grabbing some 70s wax trays.
Hey! good talking to you on YT vs. FB!
Great share Tony! Looking forward to seeing what you got in the mail! Thanks for sharing
Welcome to the community, Tony, once you start there's no stopping, looking forward to seeing some great cards.
that's what it feels like sometime!
Welcome Tony! I'm really looking forward to seeing your football collection. By far it's my favorite sport to collect especially the 70's-90's. Thanks for sharing, and I hope you have a great day.
Congrats on the new channel!
Hello Tony! Welcome to the Card community! It’s a pretty sweet group people here! I just subbed you, #67! I’m a 44yr old collector from Indiana, YT for 2 yrs but have collected since I was 9/10 years old. Love the Cubbies, I have that same pennant you have on your shelf! I build sets, player collect, TTM, vintage for the past 1 yr and a half, antique stores, LCS, ya know things like that!😁 Congrats!
Thanks! haha - yeah everyone I've met has been great and helped me get going with my new person type questions. Appreciate you liking and will be getting some more videos out.
New sub here! Just please stay away from hobby cancers like Jon's Sportscards!! He's the worst. Good luck buddy
Welcome to the community! 👍 going through your videos & some good memories!
Our favorite teams have a similar origin story. I'm a big Saints fan. No, never been to New Orleans, at least not yet. Live up in New England area. Started routing for the Saints the year they went 1-16. Ironically, thier only win came against the Jets.
