Institute for the Humanities
Canada
Приєднався 31 сер 2015
Now in its 40th year, the Institute for the Humanities at SFU seeks to accomplish these basic objectives: stimulate student interest and faculty research in demonstrating the irreducibility of humanistic perspectives in understanding some of the most pressing social, economic, political and environmental problems we face and, above all, to engage the many publics beyond the academy in city, the province, the country and, indeed, the wider world. The Institute is perfectly placed, therefore, to play a key role in the idea of SFU as “student-centred, research-driven and community-engaged.”
Winter of Discontent: The Russia-Ukraine War lecture with James Horncastle
Public lecture by James Horncastle
November 21, 2023
The Russia-Ukraine War, whose current phase began in 2022, shows no signs of abating. Ukraine’s offensive during the summer, while making limited gains, did not achieve the decisive breakthrough desired by Ukraine and its allies. The autumn weather, furthermore, will likely limit either party’s ability to launch significant military campaigns for the foreseeable future. Pressure is building on both sides, as attention fatigue sets in amongst their supporters, to end the conflict. Is peace in the short term likely, and what form will such a peace take once the conflict reaches its conclusion? These are not easy questions and require one to situate the military developments in Ukraine within the broader international context.
SPEAKER
James Horncastle is an assistant professor in the Department of Global Humanities and holder of the Edward and Emily McWhinney Professorship in International Relations at Simon Fraser University. He is also a member of the steering committee for the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Centre for Hellenic Studies. His recent article, “Weaponization of Refugees: Why Now?” examines the reasons why the world has seen an uptick in state and non-state actors employing migrants and refugees to achieve foreign policy objectives. His research interests include: refugee and migration studies; international relations; conflict studies; history of modern Greece; and Yugoslav studies.

Thank you for working to clarify rather than obscure in academic mystification this very important text.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Interestingly Karl Popper summarized the whole of Adorno's work as being just rhetoric in German language.
That's fair - sad
Red is not usually the color of envy.
Omg : settlers 😮 so wrong
Any transcript for this video please?
Unfailing optimism is the road to survival. Such timely words.
Thank you so much for this upload! Do you know where we could find the rest of the conference? I couldn't find it on your chanel. I really appreciate the upload! This sounds like an incredible event.
THE STACK. The real stack isnt a computer one, its a multidimensional one. You are the stack for multiple higher intelligences. Real talk.
I haven't heard this era or region discussed from this academic perspective, and it's both fascinating and conveys important historical trends that still have relevance today. Unfortunately, the first speaker is not confident in his English, and his speech is so halting, with heavy breathing sounds and "um"s littered every 4 or 5 words -- it proved to be hugely distracting. I've lived in Germany and am very accustomed to German accents, so it wasn't his non-native accent that's the problem; it's all of the violations of "good public speaking" principles that grates on listeners' nerves! They made it hard to absorb what he was saying. Especially for the first half, I wound up skipping over part of his lecture, because I couldn't ignore my annoyance and impatience! In the first half, when his energy is so lethargic and halting, his speaking rate is also about 3x slower than a typical speech pattern. Later on, after a video, the speaker finally got animated and spoke at a normal, smoother pace (though still littered with too many "um"s!)
Wow we are being mass traumatizaed. A call to the French who know how to start a Revolution. Tibetian dance with the other can save us _ no more others._ spread the Love
This is Possession_ what she describes is possession after soul murder If u have a negative spirit _ spit (spite) on the ground and call the numbered enity to enter _ in Jesus name I command- it- into the living life in my spit. It has to live in something that has life _I am a Child of God.
Sounds like RD Laing And People of the Lie _Peck
Im in a petri dish of nazi mussalinni satanists _ people who create soul murder and study the child abuse _to test the theory_ TRUTH_ my mommy monster.
Woke nonsense for fake wannabe academics.
I needed to hear this Dr Gordon… ✊🏽🇵🇸🙏🏽🍉‼️
Yeah, they are attempting to get rid of all tribal peoples and their religious beliefs. And they have for centuries.
Armistice angle seems plausible.
Thank you so much. I would love to animate this(I want to understand more)
Well, it's a quote from The Time article. Zelenskyy top advisers say about him: “He deludes himself, ” one of his closest aides tells me in frustration. “We’re out of options. We’re not winning. But try telling him that. It is immovable, verging on the messianic. ” One Austrian artist was in a similar state in 1945. In fact Biden administration doesn't see Ukraine beyond a spring next year. It already appointed a team to prepare a deployment of American troops to Poland that would "prevent" Russian invasion into NATO. Of course these are just political games and nobody believes that Russians have such intentions. It's all about creating narrative not reality.
Zelenskyy (he is such a big mouth) in his press-conference said that his military demanded from him mobilization of next 500 000. It's another confirmation that 500 000 Ukrainian soldiers were killed or mangled and crippled for life to the extent that even Zelenskyy couldn't send them back to the front (i.e. amputees without two or more limbs, blind etc.). In fact Zelenskyy is running out of cannon fodder. There are simply no next 500 000 to kidnap off the streets, gyms and public transport. NYT wrote about these mass kidnappings that were happening only in Zelenskyy Ukraine and Hitler's Germany in 1945 in an article ‘People Snatchers’.
The speaker has gathered together US propaganda talking points. Humanities - do better.
What a great guy! I really enjoyed this
but Canadian politicians invited a old Nazi to get on the meeting and got cheers from everyone
Wonderful presentation. Thank you.
He is , when you hear about the legacy of colonialism and racial intolerance, it is usually the UK, Germany, France, Spain, etc., rarely is Italy mentioned. I really enjoyed this.
where can i find the text ?

Its not talking but reading.
Great talk! 👌

Abolish the police. 2:51
Every Canadian should read this, especially the right and Alt-Right(pretending to be right wing) This is a terrifyingly dystopian corporate over reach. Has little to do with terrorism if you weigh what it allows. I pray for an end to Usery.
Easily the best discussion on UA-cam about Benjamin. Thank you to all involved.
Nothing "moral" about communism!!! Evil evil evil!!
The speaker uses the term abstract incorrectly. He uses it as a contrasts between empirical and nonempirical, or pragmatic vs nonpragmatic when it fact the supposed abstractness is the study of a perspective that asks why the revolution failed. Why conflate abstract, Metaphysics, and religiosity? Because they are part of the subject formation and they affect the actions people take as well as affect how groups form and act.
Thanks for uploading this talk!
The only acceptable servitude is to the old and disabled!! none before!!..Must be entirely outlawed as not taking responsibiity to self professed perfectionalist!!..Those that want things done their way can do it better themselves and get no help!
The more servitude exists the more it is used against people..remove it completely by law!!..To say hard work gets you success is a huge lie!! Success is yours to have..but your own responsibility personally!!
My contribution is at 23:30
Can we do this in america yet?
My mother done this to me i can barely go on the pain inside is so bad
My dad murdered my soul when I was a little girl.
This is done on purpose _ I had 2 33degree grandpa's
It was my delusional mother that murdered my soul and the souls of my 3 siblings during our childhoods. Mental illness is passed generationally. Why are so few willing to acknowledge that Authoritarian Christians have a large role in Generational Trauma. Migrants have been caught up in this phenomena, too.
These people ignore the thousands of years and conflicts that do not fit their narrative. Murder, slavery, rape, mass genocide, and tribalism existed since the beginning of mankind but they choose to focus only on the part of the timeline that they think reflects their lies.
I love my Settler ancestors.
