Hello, and welcome to my channel. Here we will be primarily looking at fine wood joinery turned on the lathe. Known to a majority as segmented woodturning but also known as polychromatic woodturning. We may also venture into other forms of wood working from time to time.
I realized at a young age that working with wood was the life I wanted and I have gained much knowledge over the years. Now, decades later making a living as a carpenter, I have found many ways to express myself with wood. From semi rough chainsaw carving to finely detailed chip carving, lathe work has become my favorite form of expression.

As a well seasoned carpenter, I use methods that I am comfortable with. These methods may not be the safest. Do not copy my work. You alone are responsible for your own safety. Please be safe out there folks!

I love it❤
Thank you so much 😊
Excellent job on rattle... question where did u purchase your carbide turning tools ?? Thank u
Thank you for checking out the video 😊 As for the carbides, I picked them up on Amazon and ordered extra handles to accommodate each.
👏👏👏👏👍
Thank you for checking out the video ☺️
Very well done Donaven. It came up a treat mate. All the best with your move and good luck mate.🤠
Thanks 👍 the move has started and all is well so far. Take care my friend
Beautiful work with a perfect outro.
Thank you very much! 😊
Fack...
😂
I love wenge
Right! The color and grain are wonderful. Wenge can be a little difficult to work with though ☺️
As always Donaven love your work mate. All the best.🤠
Thank you! Cheers!
Outstanding work, that is a beautiful platter.
Thank you
Wow! Love it
Thank you! 😊
NOT UNDERSTAND anything .. waste data...
I'm sorry 😐
A PROJECT TO BE PROUD OF. TRULY BEAUTIFUL.
Thank you 😊
Beautiful art, but I can't figure out how I can use it
Thank you! Art isn't always meant to be used for something. Sometimes its only meaning is admiration. But this is hollowed out with a food safe finish. Maybe a cookie jar? 😊
A shame you have to show such dangerous table saw etiquette though, hope you keep all your fingers.
You're correct. I'm a well seasoned carpenter of many decades and am comfortable with my operations on the table saw, but I should for those who are not as experienced demonstrate the use of a push stick. And set a good example! I appreciate your concern and comment ☺️
All of the superlatives have already been used up by earlier commenters. Amazing blend of art, craftsmanship and patience.
I love to hear people's thoughts on my projects 😁 Thank you for taking time to comment and checking out my video 😊
Rather than flatten all the points just because 1 point was “injured,” I would have preferred to just replace that point, perhaps with a contrasting wood. 🤷♂️
That's a great idea 💡 I didn't like getting rid of the points either, but it wasn't just one they all had little indentations from the clamping method I used. I have since then found a way to clamp the points together without damaging them. I do love your idea of a contrasting wood though
Fantastic! But I beg of you, if you’re going to put your fingers so close to the table saw blade, please get a SawStop! I’m looking forward to watching your videos.
Noted! 🙂 Thank you for checking out the video
This deserves another video where you hollow it out as you said, it looks so cool but I understand the other guy in the comments wondering what this was for haha

My hat is off - Kudos. Thanks for not adding music to your work.
Sweet. I love feedback like this 😊
Yup I want to see it
Gotcha 😊
It would be great to see how it goes together. Please do the video.
Cool
Bring it on mate.love it.
🐇 🕳️
You’re a manic. I would love to see this one made
Cool
@@donavenzulian I meant maniac. Ie crazy person. Brilliant sure😀 amazing certainly
video, video, video!
Alrighty 😊
I love it!
Thank you for checking out
Show us how😋
Cool 😎
I love how the design changes as you turn it
Right! A simple but effective design
So cool! I'd love to see how you made it!
Coming soon! 😁
Hi I'm new to your channel, I like what I see, it's definitely different. My only critique would be it was a shame you had to round off the tips, I thought it lost the sharpness of the piece. Look forward to seeing more though. 😊
Welcome to my channel 😀 I totally agree with you on flattening the points. I need to figure out a different way to clamp the points together. I really appreciate your feedback. Thank you 😊
You should have 1m followers. You are exceptional
Thank you very much 😊 that's really kind of you
All I can add is to say that all of those angles looked like spinning spikes of death - I’m so glad that you were able to keep your knuckles away 😂
Thank you 😊 I'm glad that I was able to stay clear of the spikes too. That wouldn't be a good way to start the weekend 😁
❤
❤️
Brilliant project, pity your dog looks so bored 🙂 clearly doesnt know the amazing things being made.
😆
You, my friend, are beyond being an artist. You have achieved magician level. So far, everything I've watched you make is pure magic. Please keep mesmerizing us with your awesome and magical work. Fred
Thank you 😌 I'm currently working on a new magic trick that should knock your socks off
Nice work, but there’s too much going on for me. Sorry
That's fine 😊 thank you for at least checking it out
Amazing precision
Right! It's amazing how smoothly the glue-up went once I was able to zero in on the different degrees with my saws. The pieces fit together naturally 😁
Wow. Your patience and planning and precision are amazing. What an awesome project
Thank you very much! Took almost three weeks in my free time to go from thought concept to reality. Glad that you enjoyed it 😊
@@donavenzulian I certainly did enjoy, keep up the amazing work.
I have an idea that might be of interest for you. A profesionnal told me it would be difficult to produce for a market. But doing one for a video might be possible. At least worth a try IMHO.
Thank you for checking out my video ☺️ Honestly I'm not looking to produce for a market, I have a great full time day job as a lead carpenter. In the words of a professional artist "The meaning of life is to find your gift, the purpose of life is to give it away" Pablo Picasso
Hello my young friend, I just watched this twice, the second time with my wife. This is the most amazing and complex lamination that I have ever seen. I can't even understand how you thought of it, and the precision of the cuts and the lamination amaze me and you know that I am not easily impressed. Bravo! I would love to see some still pictures of the finish piece, please. Idea - maybe a second sightly larger version with identical top and bottom finials/handles, and then sawn in half at the horizon to form two identical bowls. These would have spectacular inner patterns and still be a box. Bravo and a well earned tip of my hat from a friend and fellow turner in California. Can't wait to see what's next.....must be something in the water in Colorado or maybe it's the altitude, hehehehe...🤔🙂🙌
Thank you so much for all the support you have shown me. I'm in progress now of building further from this design to create a dual model with segments inserted to create a solid surface inside and out of a simple shaped bowl
Very impressive work, looks great.
Thank you very much! 😊
Turning art as usual. Juicy!
Thank you 😊
That is a beautiful piece of work! I can't imagine the chutzpah required to start turning after all the work getting it glued up. Nice job!
Thank you very much! ☺️
You really do like logistical nightmares. My head spins when I wonder how I could recreate your art! Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much 😊 I'm in the process of building off this design further
I agree
Well mate, that would have to be one of the best turning i have ever seen. Thank you for sharing it Donaven.🤠
Glad you enjoyed it! 😁 The ideas blooming from this design I think are going to be pretty cool 😎
Wow!
😁
WHY?
In my shop I'm not controlled by clients, architects, engineers, or a boss on how to use my woodworking skills. "Why" you ask, because I can. Also I was intrigued by the math to intersect the dihedral angles of 20 tetrahedrons to the dihedral angle of one icasohedron, making one really cool polyhedron 😁
@@donavenzulian but what part of any of making that object requires a lathe?
After assembling the segments I hollowed it out on the lathe to make a stellated icosahedron box. In this short is where I'm moving the tool rest into position to do so
Beautiful Work...!! how do you avoid air bubbles in the casting..??
Thank you 😊 I use a deep cast/ long cure time epoxy. This with a slight vibration added to the table usually will bring air bubbles up. Typically I use a combination of vacuum chamber followed by a pressure pot, but this casting was too large for my equipment. Thanks for checking out my video 😊
Amazing!
Thank you for checking it out 😁
Definately the best I have seen yet! Superb !
Thank you 😊
Another beautiful piece off your lathe Donaven. Thank you mate.🤠
Thank you for watching my videos! It's always a pleasure to hear your words of encouragement. You're very welcome 😁
