Can I Be Successful If I Give Up My Ego?
My ego drives me to achieve, and if I were to give up my ego, wouldn't I also be giving up that drive and all my future successes?
With this prompt as the starting point, Vipin, Rasanath, and Michael dive into the nuanced relationship between the ego and ambition, exploring whether our quest for success is truly driven by the ego - or if there's a deeper force at play. Drawing on timeless teachings from Eastern wisdom, particularly the Bhagavad-gita, the hosts examine how the ego shapes our desires, motivations, and definitions of success. Through candid personal stories, philosophical insights, and practical reflections, they challenge the idea that surrendering the ego means surrendering ambition. Instead, they offer fresh perspectives on how aligning with the true self can lead to more authentic, fulfilling achievements.

    Great talk gentleman. If I may, at 10:30 the description of anger was an interesting one to me because I saw metaphorical parallels to fire. Anger and fire are both thoughts as destructive and are experience and manifested almost instantaneously. I think what is so scary about anger is that makes it so dangerous: it's so quick to get experienced, and sometimes we are not in control which leads us to say or do things that destroy others and ourselves in its wake. Just like fire, if not handled properly. however, on the other hand, if the fire is controlled and handled properly, it can allow us to do wonderful things like cooking, flying hot air balloons, fix things, etc. and likewise, a person can be angry about the conditions in which they live or about injustices in the world and so anger can give us the energy, the fuel to our fire so that we get up and do something.

    from the notion "i'm self aware", can we also draw a small parallel to saying "i'm pretty modest/humble".

    • @UpbuildChannel
      @UpbuildChannel 3 роки тому

      yes, humility is a self correcting virtue. as soon as we think we are humble, we've no longer become humble.

    Thank you for another inspiring interview, dear Rasanath and Michael! The line "the source of shame is the ego figuring out that it doesn't live up to the true self" really hit it for me! In general, emotions seem to be the response from a mismatch between perception and reality (whatever that might be at the end of the day...). Too much for something to be discussed here...looking forward to more!

      Thank you Heidger. Indeed the ego is always telling us that we need to be more than we are. But if we can remember who we really are, separate from the ego, we discover that what the ego wants us to be is nowhere near as wonderful as what we already are.

  • @parismarashi

    This is an amazing conversation. I live to be corrected. What might I not be seeing? Been journaling as I listen. Bringing these questions in a safe environment…holding the mirror up to ourselves and acknowledging our own shame, even feeling it! A lot of gravity there… and a lot of tears! this is hard work! Also this is so tricky: The layers of the masks we carry. What do we do when we notice how much our lives are designed by masks, and we are interacting with other peoples masks? In those moments, I get scared and just want to isolate myself. But I guess the lesson is to feel the sadness and learn from it. It’s so hard.

      Thank you for this beautiful reflection Parastou. You speak from such a realized place. As we share about in our Enneagram workshop, speaking about our masks can be a shortcut to taking them off, which may encourage others to take off their masks as well. It is very hard to speak about our masks and wear them at the same time.

    Very engaging discussion again, thank you! To me it points to never letting go of the beginner's mind in all things. I deeply appreciate the point Rasanath made when he quoted Thomas Merchant and how humility is the first to go the moment you state you are humble. I was also thinking - qualities like self-awareness, humility, need to be aspirational because such qualities are like infinity, no real destination or end in sight, they can only ever be ideals. I like how M, Montaigne journaled and wrote about what he went through physically and mentally on a daily basis. Self-awareness in his casr used and empirical recording.
