    In my quest to bring "my 2003 SL500" back to it's original glory, I have repaired many issues and am watching your awesomely crafted video with expectations that this too, will eventually be an issue as well. I went through rebuilding the 8 or so actuators on my 1995 SL320 already and I'm very familiar with the Benz boggles. Your video is one the best I've watched to date, thanks very much !

    Get a mighty vac 8 liter extractor, and you can change the oil from the top in less than 15 minutes...you will have nothing to do under the car....also get a large heavy duty cooking sheet and use it laid on the motor for the filter and other items while changing it...these cars are fun to keep going, the junkyard is your friend, you have a good attitude...keep the videos coming. Thanks

    I just did this. I have the exact car. Drilling the hole is easy since aluminum is soft metal. Go slow and low enough for your drill to actually nick the white disc. Then I got midsized Channelocks and a Torx short bit that just fits in my new hole I just drilled. I drilled the hole close to the gap in the clip but NOT in the gap. It takes patients and a lot of coordination to slowly squeeze the bit in. It should just push the edge of the C-clip out to get a small screwdriver under it. In my case, and this is why I said to drill as low as you can just touching the white disc with your bit. When I pressed the bit into the hole it pushed the clip out and popped UNDER the clip, then the clip just lifted out. The ram with the o-rings with some authority will come out. Get a bright light and carefully check the bore for any damage like nicks or pitting etc. I think I'm going to leave the headliner off for a few days to make sure there are no more leaks.

    Your front hydraulic cylinder is leaking for top. When oil gets to low it will stop working altogether. There are good videos on you tube to show you how to replace it or repair it which is what I did. I ordered the O-ring and it came in and I replaced it with a little instruction from UA-cam. Don’t worry about the ripple in your rubber there that will go away once the oil stops leaking, it happened to me. I thought I had to replace rubber but I didn’t. It went back to normal.

    Thank you for this video. I have 05 SL and my left front corner is sagging if left for about a week. I didn't see any puddles of oil though. I need to inspect it soon. But I'm on the fence if I need to keep ABC in the long run. Folks swap it with coilovers and enjoy it. Like someone wrote in the comments below - you never know if you make it from A to B or if come to your garage tomorrow only to find out car is sagging. I know preventive maintenance is the key but when major components like struts start to fail then the price isn't cheap. Arnott front left ABC strut currently costs $800 at FCP Euro + $300 for core deposite. Regarding core charge they say this: "The customer is responsible for the cost of return shipping". According to USPS shipping 31 lbs in 30x8x8 box from me to their address in CT would cost about $86. So if we add tax then the front strut is over $900. The rear one costs the same. Plus when replacing the strut I guess I'll have to add some fluid. So assuming you may spend about $1000 per year on ABC, then getting coilovers doesn't look bad. Folks swap it and enjoy it...

    You would getter results using electrolysis removing the rust. (provided that hinge does not have brass bushings. Brass and copper get green and destroyed by it) Just set up a plastic tank with metal on the sides of the inside of the tank. Hook a computer power supply to it on a 12v lead or a 12v unregulated DC power source. Positive to the metal in the tank and a negative lead to the part you are removing rust from. Fill tank with water and add 1/2 cup of Arm & Hammer super soda for every 5 gallons of water. Mix real good. Hang part in solution and do not let it touch the sides. let it run for a day and rust is gone. Just shim the fender they make fender shims for that. Go down to the parts store or a Auto Body Jobber and get some. A few shims and your fender will fit just the way it is supposed too. ( I painted vehicles for many years). Get the shims made for fenders using washers you have to take the bolt all the way out to fit a new washer in. The shims you just loosen the bolt and its forked sliding right in. It will push that fender out. You might need to use a grinder to slot the bolt hole in the fender to get it to move as well. You learned the way I usually do..... The hard way.

    • @pile-o-projects
      @pile-o-projects Рік тому

      Thanks for the feedback and great advice. Learning the hard way is still learning, and I am learning as I go. Your input is extremely helpful. Yes, I will tackle adjusting the fender and will get the fender shims. As for the rust, I didn't land up using the brackets that came with the junkyard door, but I like the idea of trying something new with the electrolysis.

    My 2004 R230 (Mars/Stone) is like Forest Gump's "Jenny"... Loving her is gonna be heart break for sure. 😪 😩. But, just maybe, isn't the forever fix is only a $1200 set of coilovers? ...then she'll love me for sure. Some coilovers are better than the unknown quantity of getting a different used car, anyway; ...one certainly not as lovely and not the one that took me to 153mph with such grace. I'll keep trying to rescue Jenny...if only for the privilege of maybe having her break my heart...again. #SL_cuck_life

    Wavy rubber seal above passenger window is caused by a hydraulic oil leak. The hydraulic line going to the center lock cylinder for the retractable roof is located along the right edge of the roof. I had this problem in 2021 and had the hydraulics repaired, but did not change the seal (too expensive for a simple rubber seal!).
