5 string tenor guitar, Zach Hoyt no.20
Переглядів 147Місяць тому
This is a mini version of a mini version of a Benedetto-style archtop guitar. The customer requested a 5 string tenor guitar with a body of a smaller size than I have made, and this was what we came up with. I've never played a tenor guitar, or heard of a 5 string tenor guitar before, so this was all pretty experimental. There will be pictures of this guitar on the December shop news on my webs...

This mandocello will be shown on the Shop News page for November 2024.

14" piebald archtop guitar, Zach Hoyt no. 18
Переглядів 2112 місяці тому
This is my 18th acoustic guitar. It is a mildly experimental design, with the body shape taken from a Gibson L-0 plan for which I had made a mold some years ago. I noticed that the shape was very similar to the 17" archtop guitar design I have been following for several years. I also recently made a mahogany archtop octave mandolin using this same body shape. This guitar has a western red cedar...

Sounds Awesome, long live playing the banjo without picks. I love your Esoteric Banjo Playing I love your mellow playing keep it up.
I love that sound it's very mellow and very pretty keep up the good work I love what you're doing. And I love that you're not playing Scruggs Style and I love that you're not wearing those picks. I love your playing keep it up.
Nice Instrument! Your Mandolin playing skills are coming along.
Thank you very much. I can now sort of play two tunes, which is twice as many as before.
This is not only beautiful but a great sounding instrument
There is something special about banjo sound to mee.
Country vibes😊
Like the looks of this tenor .
They are both so pretty
Amazing, can't wait until you add these to the shop
That's very nice of you. I won't be able to offer this as a stock instrument for as long as I live where I am now, because I don't have room to store one at all conveniently. Someday, though, if I have a more suitable space, I would like to keep a bass in stock.
beastly!
Beautiful job on this guitar also !
Thank you. It was fun building two in a row,
What a Beautiful Guitar !
Nice build! (@gbthreefinger/BHO)
sweet sound
Zach, looks like mine, no. 3. I’m really liking the nylon strings on it. I really sounds great!
I'm glad you're still enjoying yours. These that I've made are all pretty much the same except the first one that had some custom design elements.
Rosewood next?
I've never made a neck from rosewood, but I would think this type of instrument might not be the best choice for that because the pot end is pretty light, and it might make it feel pretty neck heavy overall. I could cover the sides with rosewood veneer, but I don't have any left now.
❤❤❤😊😊😊
I love the archtop body on it and tone , I’m a mandolin player, just curious if octave mandolin chording, scales are the same before I’d buy one , but I really like it
That's very nice of you. The theory of playing the octave mandolin is the same as a regular mandolin, since they have the same tuning except one octave lower. In practice it feels quite different because of how much bigger it is. It's sort of like the difference between driving a car and a box truck.
How do i purchase?
You can send me an email through my website at hoytbsanjos.com. Thank you very much
Sounds quite tinny on this video. I'm not talking about your playing skills.
I think he is using a thin pick and playing close to the fret board.. IF that is the case I would like to hear you play with a thicker pick and a little closer to the bridge. I might be interested.
Great job Mr.Hoyt! I love the sound!
Nice sound, Zach! Are your fiddles full size? Looks slightly smaller to me. Carved top and back?
Thank you very much. They are all 4/4 size, but I am 7 feet tall so they look smaller when I play them. They are carved top and back.
Ah, I see. I recently built a fiddle using flat spruce and ash pieces for the top and back, respectively, heated and bent to slightly arch them and glued to the sides which I sanded to match the contour on either side. It turned out a bit smaller than full size due to the limitations with starting dimensions of the ash wood I was using, but still has a 13” length body (including the edges) and a scale of ~12 1/2”. The lower bout is only 6 1/4” wide, and the inner depth is about 1 1/4”, with an overall of about 1 9/16”. It’s a cornerless body of my own drawing. Basically a 7/8 scale length on a skinny 3/4 body.
Good work!!! My dream is to make my own bass. Really fine job.
Bowed bass is special sound
No purfling, right?
I don't believe in purfling, personally, but that's just me.
Hell yeah
Oy that's pretty neat!
Beautiful
What do you typically charge for a bass , I’d love a 3/4 , just curious, I still love my archtop you made
I'm glad you're still enjoying the archtop. Since this was my first bass the charge was a bit on the lower side as it was kind of an experiment, and the customer bought all the materials and parts except the cherry lumber and had them shipped to me. I could do another one for $4,000 all inclusive, plus or minus a bit depending on the wood choices. This one is a 3/4 size, and slightly unusual in that it has a fully carved back, rather than a flat back or a hybrid. It was built from the Gofriller plan that is sold online.
Nice job, Zach!
Alright Zach! Great stuff! Thanks! 🙂🎻✌️😎
Love to own one how?
Thanks for commenting. My website is in the description and from there you can email, call or text. I'll be out of reach for much of the next 3 days but will reply as soon as I have cell service.
I built a banjo with a top made of 1/8” Baltic Birch. Similar to the banjos marketed by “Backyard Instruments”. Sounds similar to this… And quite playable.
Not bad
Good one!!
This sounds loud and crisp! Nice to see a resonator in an open back banjo!
I love it. You just have to enjoy a good handmade banjo. I play on a deering good time that I got 2nd hand. Soon enough I'm going to try and make my own causei think that if you make a banjo by han, or any instrument for that matter, it'll just sound better when you play it. I enjoy the dedication you put into this, soumds pretty dang good, keep up the great work!
Really nice! I like the second one. I'm curious about how they come set up. I like the action a little bit lower than some. Would it just be a matter of changing the bridge to adjust the action height?
Thank you very much. If you let me know what action height you want I can make a bridge the right height for that and make any other needed adjustments before shipping. I can generally go down to about 3/32" action at the 12th fret, and stock setup is 1/8". I can't go much below 3/32" without buzzing.
@@zachoyt2686 that's good to know. As an aside, I wonder if you could help me understand what effect rim thickness has a banjo's sound and laminate vs block rims. I really like the look of the rims you make but I'm curious why so many other banjos are thinner ply rims is that mostly aesthetic or cost or is there a real effect on the sound
@@belro17 I can make block rims here out of wood pieces that would otherwise be waste, so I do it for that reason. Factory made banjos mostly don't use block rims because it's too fidgety, and it would be cheaper in that context to laminate your own rims or buy them from a supplier. The consensus seems to be that a well made rim will sound good, whether block or laminated.
Beautiful !! One of my great regrets was selling my Zach Hoyt A scale banjo when i was broke. I need another someday.........
I was wondering if there was somewhere I could buy your instruments? You seem to be an amazing luthier and I’d love to buy one
Thank you very much. My website is the hoytbanjos.com in the video description. If you want to order something from there just send me an email or call or text.
@@zachoyt2686 okay thank you! I’ll very much consider purchasing one
its a wonderful little instrument, absolutely gorgeous
👍👏👏👏
Nice, Bud! Don't quit your day job just yet for Nashville. I like that violin, man Thanks for the share..
Thank you. My day job now is building instruments, but luckily I don't have to be in Nashville to do it.
That bish is mine now
Nice! Thanks! 🎻😎🙂
Bro, this is excellent!
Nice man!🎉
Wow, that sold fast!
I was mildly astonished too. I'll be making another one from cherry as soon as possible.
Noice!
... sound nicely !... what is that brand please ?
Thank you. I make them myself, under my name, Zachary Hoyt. If you go to hoytbanjos.com you can see the banjos I've made.
Very nice.
