The Dramatic Demolition of the Pearl Street Congregational Church Spire, Hartford, Connecticut
On August 26, 1899, the upper portion of the steeple (including the heavy capstone) of the Pearl Street Congregational Church in Hartford was brought to earth safely through the efforts of contractor William F. O'Neil. This feat of engineering, which was witnessed by a crowd of thousands and was captured in a photograph, was the culmination of weeks of planning, preparation and public scrutiny. The ongoing work of church demolition, and speculation about how the steeple would finally be brought down, attracted the attention of passers-by, who marveled at the dangerous work of steeple-climber John Kiffe. The ongoing work also sparked a number of reminiscences about the building and the colorful personalities associated with it from a number of long-time Hartford residents.
Utilizing contemporary accounts from the Hartford Courant and the Hartford Times newspapers, this video brings to life those days in August of 1899 when a Hartford landmark was reduced to rubble. It shows how a complicated problem of engineering was solved and reminds us of the fascinating personalities that inhabited the city over 200 years ago.

My father had worked at Savitt’s part-time in the 50s as a UConn student (his father, who worked at CBT, had arranged the job) and he got me a similar gig in the early 80s. Wow! What an amazing experience for this sheltered suburban white boy! From “What’s that?”; “it’s a BAGEL, son!”, to acting as bag-man on quick trips to the tiny jewelers upstairs in other buildings along Asylum who’d do the one-hour turnaround ring-sizing etc., to (shhhh) buying alcohol for church youth trips at downtown liquor stores with much more lenient ID policies - aka none - than the stores in my town, to trying (and utterly failing ha ha…such a nerd!) to make it with the Black and Portuguese girls who worked there (the store had a very diverse staff), to watching everyone stand up a little straighter when Mr. Savitt would walk in, I had an amazing set of experiences working at “35 Asylum Street, Haaaaartford!”

In 1964 I sold the Hartford Courant newspapers at the Travelers entrance on Central Row. I was 14 at the time. On countless mornings as I arrived to set up my stand inside the lobby of Travelers I would find a hot chocolate and an egg sandwich sitting on the stacks of newspapers. This was done by one of the staff of the Marble Pillar. What a comfort this was to a poor boy from Dutch Point. I don't remember the employees name who was so kind to me. Amazingly during my senior year at Hartford High School I got a job at the Marble Pillar serving behind the counter and delivering meals to the customers sitting at the tables. There was one regular customer who stopped in after his work nearly every day a bought just one beer and then would leave to catch his bus. I acquired a taste for the delicious German food there since i was only charged half price as an employee. Sadly there was not much business in those days which of course made me sad because i loved the place and so wanted it to succeed. I wish that i could have taken my children to share in my history. Honiss was a place I loved to eat those large full belly fried claims as well as their sword fish. What an amazing atmosphere to eat in with all the interesting pictures mounted wall to wall. It was my favorite restaurant in Hartford until my move to Raleigh in 1980. So sad to not have those two nostalgic dining places cease to be there.

Cant be any harder to take the spire down and it's cap stone than it was to lift the capstone up and build the spire in the first place, they would have used scaffolding around all sides and planking.

I worked as a stock boy for G Fox in late 1971, to early 1972, in the mezzanine luggage dept, just above the Main/1st floor. Being on break, or at dinner, provided opportunities to wander the store. There are a lot of stories to tell, but suffice it to say, that I relished the opportunity to be here at Christmas time. The perfume counter, on the first floor, was lined with pretty sales ladies, while customers on the other side of the counter were 4 or 5 deep!

Hi Dan, thank you for the trip down memory lane with Hartford's early restaurants. I'm Mickey Miano's daughter, Michele, and it was so heartwarming to once again hear stories I grew up with and see pictures of the old east side. I went to St. Anthony's School also on Market St. down from dad's restaurant. One last thing I want to remind you of. Dad went to bat against the city fathers and Travelers Insurance Co. that they were taking the people out of the city and replacing them with buildings. I'd also like to mention Ton Condon, a reporter with the Htfd Times and Courant, who died this past week who also wrote about old Hartford. Thank you for your beautiful words.
