    Printing journal pages is great, but as I said below, cheap is good, but first you had better decide whether or not you want journals that will still be around for your old age, for your children to read when you're gone, for and even for your grandchildren and great-grandchildren. If you do, you'll have to pay for acid free and lignin free paper. This doesn't mean expensive, but it does mean eight to ten dollars minimum, and probably sixteen to twenty dollars. Or, oddly enough, you can buy HP premium 32lb Printer paper, which is about twelve to thirteen dollars for five hundred sheets. It's even good for fountain pens. Line it or dot it on your printer, and punch holes in it for a three ring binder. It's one of the very few papers out there that is high quality, and that brags about being acid free AND lignin free, which is essential for long term survival. Even many hundred-dollar journals do not have paper that is lignin free. If you want to print pahes, print on good paper that will last, and HP 32lb is the cheapest paper that will last. If you don't use fountain pens or heavy markers, you can use the HP 28lb Premium and save a couple of bucks. A friend of mine said there is a right way to journal, and a wrong way. The right way is just to journal. The wrong ways is to be frightened away from journaling. If someone new is worried about the time it might take, buy a five year journal. You only have room for a couple of sentences per day, and the concept is fascinating. I keep one of these in addition to my regular journal. One thing is certain, regardless of how much you pay for a journal, self-care by journaling is a heck of a lot cheaper than self-care from a psychologist or psychiatrist, and often even more effective.

    I would’ve never guessed people would’ve thought it was “selfish” to journal being it’s part record and history keeping at times. It doesn’t mean most journalese are going to be famous, published or be written about in history books. Nonetheless, if you get serious about journaling and write better and better going forward and you make good work; even if it’s just your family, you will receive rewards and appreciation for your good, hard works. Journaling doesn’t have to be, and wasn’t started, for “self-care”. That said, it’s therapeutic nonetheless as well as helpful for brain activity, better thinking skills, writing skills and a plethora of other things. There’s a type and style for everyone. Many presidents, writers and successful leaders kept journals or wrote for journals. All you have to do is explore and express what is you or what you learn about. The rest takes care of itself when you’re hard at work.

      If you use each daily spread (which is 2 pages) every day, the journal will last you about 150 days. The pages aren't dated though, so you can use it anytime, stop, and pick it back up later at another date. But it holds about 150 days worth of pages if you use only the 2-pages for each day.

    I have kept a journal for 45 1/2 yrs.I didn't start as a child. I had been married 6 1/2 yrs when I started. The entire time (except for one unfortunate short period when I typed & printed my journal.....SO regret that) I have used inexpensive, plain, ol' 200 page, divided, spiral bound, notebooks. Yes, the kind we all used in school. I stock up on them when stores have pre-school sales. They serve the purpose just fine ! There are no Journal Police. No one is going to stand over someone & command them to journal a certain way. Journaling is highly personal & individual. No one will be tested, graded or critiqued for content, spelling, grammar, punctuation or sentence structure. Write the way you talk! It's that simple! Just get your thoughts out. I don't embellish my journals. I don't use prompts. I don't journal at any set time of the day. I go a day or several once in awhile.That's fine! I write about my feelings, experiences, funny things that happened, funny things our dog or cats do. I chronicle my life. The one thing I think is important is : writing by hand. Our emotions show thru our writing & our writing changes as we age. Both are interesting to observe. I don't feel the least bit intimidated (not even on the first day I started a journal) by the 8.5 by 11" size pages. I don't feel intimidated when it's time to start a new journal. I just sit down & write when the mood hits me & when there's something to write. It's that simple. I don't designate a page a day. I just write until I run out of things to write. If that's a few lines, fine. If it goes over to the next page, fine. When I write the next time, I just start where I left off.....I make note of the day of week, date, & time & start writing. I have no idea why some people are making a bigger deal out of this than need be ! Just sit down & write. It doesn't matter if it's neat & tidy. It doesn't matter if it's just rambling thoughts. It's fine because it's you!

      Thanks for sharing! I agree, it's better to write by hand. And yes whatever works for someone is how they should do it! Some beginners need more guidance, ideas, and motivation, which is what i try to help with. But yes, in the end, it's a very personal activity that can be done in whatever way works for that person.

      I agree journaling is just expressing yourself. However, I do have to say if you don’t improve or ever learn better English and writing skills to better express yourself more profoundly eventually, well then it’s sort of not worth it. I mean, if you’re going to write, short or long, gobbledygook for even a decade: that’s a decade you wasted of not expressing yourself to the best of your ability. That’s a decade of things that might’ve been profound or important to you but that not many people can read, understand or get much out of without possibly falling asleep. Many people don’t let people read or look at their journals. But there are people who do and they definitely benefit when they can share things from their journals with others. At least that’s how I feel. You don’t even have to share from your journal. Just being able to go back and read your own work in a refreshing way is an accomplishment and rewarding in itself.

    • @patwagner9308
      @patwagner9308 Рік тому

      @@JChannel_ if someone reads my journals after I'm gone, I don't care . I'm not going to write w/ someone reading them in mind. I write from my heart. Journaling is highly personal. You feel the way you do about it. You do it your way. That's how it should be. But I'm not striving for literary genius or improving my English ( I know where apostrophes belong or don't belong. I know when to use they're instead of their or there. I was straight A student in English).I'm writing for the pleasure & the outlet. I journal my way. That's how it should be. A journal isn't a book w/ readers in mind. It's for the author.

    • @JChannel_

      @@patwagner9308 Seems like maybe you need to journal some more or maybe get a little more interaction with friends or therapy because dang. That comment completely ignored the many things I said about understanding that many people don’t like sharing or let people read their journals etc, that you don’t have to share, but that SOME people benefit from sharing and that it’s totally okay for journaling just to express yourself. But wow, your comment completely encapsulated the stereotype people give to people who journal. The conscious or subconscious selfish nature some* have and the tendency to make everything about themselves. I never said you had to journal any way or that you had to improve. I said if you don’t improve at all there is a problem. It’s a ridiculous idea to say that no one ever needs to improve. Even professional writers have to improve their voice and the way they express themselves. But if you want to live with a mediocre voice in your writing I’m not here to force you to change. If you want to never read your own journals even to yourself okay, or if your okay with reading the same style and voice for every journal then you go right ahead. Everything I said still stands. I don’t need to apologize for any of it. You merely over exaggerated what you thought I was saying. I can’t help that’s what you got from those comments. Please try reading again from a different perspective.
