Opening of Painting and Photography group exhibition titled "Russia - An Indian View", curated by Aakshat Sinha and Savita Gupta, supported by Russian Embassy in India on Monday 19th August 2024, at Russian House in New Delhi (24 Firoz Shah Road, New Delhi). Mandi House Metro Station.
The Chief Guests were Mrs. Diana Alipova (Spouse of the Russian Ambassador to India), Subhash Verma (National Advisor Indian Association of Travel and Tourism Experts), Ayush Mohan (Sarod player, Mohan Brothers) in the gracious company of other dignitaries, art lovers and members of the Media. Mrs. Diana Alipova cut the red ribbon to open the exhibition, followed by lamp lighting by the guests and curators.
Mrs. Diana Alipova mentioned at the opening, “This exhibition is a testament to the people-to-people connection across borders that bridge cultures in contact for centuries no. Here, we see Indians presenting their understanding of Russia and it is interesting to see how some of the artists who have never actually been to Russia have presented their understanding through paintings of nested dolls or snow-covered landscapes. “
Curators Aakshat Sinha and Savita Gupta shared, “India and Russia share a cultural and spiritual relationship since times much before the present-day Russia and India came into existence. This friendship transcends language and distance barriers. Dating from the time of Afanasy Nikitin’s travels to India, through Roerich families’ travel and settlement in India, to Raj Kapoor’s Awara and the Bollywood tearjerkers dubbed into Russian being screened on national Russian TV, to current day trade, education and cultural exchanges. Despite being the festival of Rakhi today, it is heartening to see that so many people (120+) came out to see the show and support art and Indo-Russian bonding.”
Guest Subhash Verma, stressed, “…need to hold such cultural activities that bring countries closer and help art be the unifier as more and more people travel and not just as tourists”. Renowned Sarod player, Ayush Mohan, also emphasised from personal experience, “…just like our (Mohan Brothers) musical performances across the world unite people using strings of music, art has the capacity to heal and spiritually uplift.”
Russia, An Indian View - is presenting and initiating dialogue around the view/perspective of Russia through the eyes of an Indian person/artist. Paintings, photographs, memorabilia are all bearers of India’s affinity to Russia. The exhibition features paintings, photographs and objects (memorabilia) by 20+ Indian artists that present Indian perspectives of Russia (USSR) and will be on view till 21st September 2024 (Sundays closed). There will be theatre performances (Play by Chekhov) and workshop (Stanislavskiy method) and film screening (Nadezhda, a trilingual short film) during the course of the month long exhibition.
