How do I draw muscles like David Finch?
Here is a good tip of you want to "test" your knowlege of anatomy. Using a 3D modeling software like Blender or Nomad sculpt, just attempt to sculpt a realistic bodybuilder. As you turn the camera and shape things you are going ti begin to see the holes in your anatomy knowledge. "Wait where does this exactly connect? This figure is slightly hunched so wouldnt this back muscle stretch here?" It has been an eye opener for me as I have had to continually refer to references on areas i thought i had on lock.
@@DerrickBarrows absolutely! That’s probably one of the best ways to strengthen your underlying anatomy knowledge I’ll keep that in mind, for another video
So, the arm on that Wolverine is super impressive. The twist/fold of the bicept muscle is a completely real interpretation that often gets missed or is usually just indicated by a quick mark. Im a little hung on the pec joining to the bicep at that point, doesnt the chest join to the shoulder? I believe the upper side cluster of chest muscle joins and makes up the bottom/inside part of the shoulder, correct?
@@DerrickBarrows I think it looks fine, it shows how the pec connects at the shoulder and kinda folds under the arm pit it might be a tad bit elongated but I think it’s perfectly fine from an anatomy standpoint
Plus it shows the striations that divide the pec into three parts
i look at michelangelo, he is the master at anatomy. Frank Frazetta gets his knowledge from Bridgeman (even the knees), and Bridgeman is based on michelangelo. so the prime source is michelangelo. look at the sistine chapel and last judgement
@@Dehumanizer3000 definitely, I’ve looked at him a few times
Bridgeman guide to anatomy is an amazing tome of knowledge. You can download the PDF free if you have never used it
@ yeah Bridgman books are amazing it’s the book everyone should look at for anatomy, I gotta make another video on that subject
Hey man, I'm Instagram artist too. Our ambitions are shared, next year is going to be focused on grinding out studies, sharpening techniques, even if that means posting less finished work to social media. I absolutely loved the finished compositions I did this year, but I've reached my skill ceiling. I'm glad you posted that Venom picture last week, it's good you're starting to experiment with your own creative visions. Funny enough, I'll be moving away from my original work to do more observational drawings. Drawing from reference is okay if it means building skills. Either way, 2025 will be the year we reach a new frontier. Godspeed Kalen Howard.
@@calebstanton6986 absolutely! Can’t wait to see how we both improve over this year
Dude, you re are so right. I’ve been drawing Frank frazetta stuff for the past 3 weeks and I’ve seen more improvement in my understanding of anatomy over that time than anything in the last 6 months
Yeah same with me, I’ve been more towards Simon bisley recently but their all good picks to learn and study from I’ve improved quickly studying these guys
I really love this video, I'm also practice anatomy, and this helps a lot!
Glad that you love it!, and I’m glad it’s helping, it’ll really make your journey a lot easier
Wow dude, the sheer quantity of Sketching and pages you have filled is incredible and very inspiring to me. It takes me years to fill even a tiny sketchbook haha I just never seem to finish them! Will be binging your videos for inspiration! Keep it up
@@SketchedbySte thank you very much! That really means a lot to me I draw about 2-4 hours a day but it doesn't matter how many pages you fill or books you fill the thing that matters is if your learning something new everyday, getting better at art is just many mini victories over your artistic journey
Your doing amazing! Keep at it !!!❤
@@TrekkComics definitely will! Thanks for the support
Great drawings!

dope video!
Thank you!!
So I wanted to say after I edited this video I definitely will be doing a lot of these kind of videos, I had a insane amount of fun doing this But I didn't have so much fun editing it, I'd like to keep these videos between 30-60 mins because I hate listening to myself talk for over an hour I'm gonna need new lighting for this type of video And I'm gonna need to stop using .5 zoom when recording because it messes with the quality So I'll forsure make some tweaks here and there but absolutely any recommendations are more than welcome and I truthfully do need some help with the series name, how long each episode should be, and any suggestions for lighting or sound quality But thank you guys so much for watching and I'll see you all in the next video!
This series will also be on a playlist on my channel so it's all easy to find and study along!
Great video man!! I had the same issue with the lead pointer! On amazon they have some that have caps!
@@TrekkComics i definitely should look into ones with caps, the lead spill is insane some days
Great Video!

Im loving your videos man! I have been studying the same artists you have for a while!! I found your channel and we have pretty similar styles and influences!! Keep up the good work!!👍 P.S i would love a setup tour!
@@TrekkComics thank you man that means a lot to me! And yes definitely a setup tour is a good idea, it isn't nothing special tho lol I'll include that in my comic tools video!
Loving the progress

great video 👍👍keep it up!!!
Thank you!
seems like you're doing a pretty good job so far! Just a word of advice on the armor- if you hate drawing it, try not to make your comics revolve around characters that constantly wear it. You're going to be drawing those same characters tens, hundreds, maybe thousands of times by the time you're finished if you go for a full run. So if you hate drawing the characters, you won't be too successful. Of course, if you learned how to draw armor you'd probably have an easier time. I'd recommend studying the joints and points of motion- i find that a lot of armor art gets stuck there, because the armor looks stiff and can't move. You can find videos of people in plate armor moving around, which show off just how flexible it actually is. That being said- good luck with your comics, and just your art journey in general. If you're looking for dynamic fights and the like, i'd recommend looking at Tatsuki Fujimoto's works (chainsaw man and fire punch specifically), and Yuji Kaku's hell's paradise. Studying those characters and the ways they're drawn might help you out.
@@deffonotdio6751 yeah most definitely, I don't wanna make myself hate drawing them or make it feel like a chore, but it sucks at the same time cause I love the way armor looks on characters especially Warhammer 40k and plenty of my favourite series and characters wear armor or have some on them somewhere, so it's definitely a good skill for me to learn, but I definitely will be checking out those suggestions that totally reminded me of the fight scenes in Dragon Ball, for some reason I never thought to look at Anime for fight scenes so that helps out tremendously, thanks for the suggestion!
@@KHowardArtist no problem, happy to help! I've found that manga and anime have been a pretty big inspiration for me lol. Since you seem to be into comics I imagine the jump wouldn't be too hard. Yuji kaku specifically is actually writing for marvel ATM, iirc they're due to start publishing moon knight soon. I do get the frustration though- characters in armor are very cool but making armor look believable often requires knowledge of anatomy, gesture, and on top of that the armor itself lol. So it's a learning experience. For another piece of unsolicited advice- I'd say try to keep your armors simple to start off with? Warhammer 40k is a pretty good thing to study imo, because the armors can be broken down into a lot of basic shapes once the engravings are ignored. They're complex, but they've got quite an identifiable visible language, if that makes sense?
@@deffonotdio6751 yeah definitely, I never even thought to consider anime especially DBZ until reading your comment lol And yeah 40k is an extremely easy armor to start with BUT the engravings are where it'll be hard to re draw lol The comic I'm doing is my own Story for Gears Of War and their armor is pretty basic too, but for my personal comic it doesn't have very much armor right now so that's a plus for me
I'd lay off copying Finch and grab & study Michael Hampton's figure drawing book and the Anatomy for Sculptors book. Then go back to Finch and you'll get what stylistic shorthands Finch does to describe form and anatomy. Right now you're just copying his symbolism without understanding why he does what he does.
@@marczwaneveld2663 I looked at that both of those books and I didn't like it that much It didn't feel like me when I was studying pages out of it, it just wasn't my style of studying, gesture or anatomy, Finch is the only artist who symbolizes what I want my art to look like and feel like I'm picking up on his ways more and more as I study him
Keep it up bro
I will, thanks for watching
great!
great info man 🔥🔥
Glad I could help, thanks for watching
Great vid, Ive been looking for good paper for my comic
So in conclusion Strathmoore Bristol boards- They are an extremely excellent option for paper and the use of it for finished artwork plus commissions is the reason it's used by professional artists. The strathmoore sketch paper Not a big fan of this paper but like I said if it's for quick ideas and quick sketches it's good for you but the paper doesn't hold its lead very well and it's just to light of a paper in my opinion The north shore sketchbook Probably my favourite artbook I've used so far it's all I've been using because of its thickness its ability to hold pencils and its ability to hold ink decently Makes it an extremely good book for daily use and studies
I need to see the original
What is art block
Art block can be something different for each artists, but basically it's just losing motivation to draw OR just for some unknown reason losing all skills to draw suddenly for a day, happened to me a few times now since I've started but mainly it's just loss of motivation and heightened frustration while drawing
Don't forget to check out my other videos!!
Just subscribed, 10 subscribers in 4 days is pretty good! keep it up!
Thank you!
Nice recommendations. I really like Bridgman. Also, thanks for sharing the binders. I believe figuring out your drawing process by using a sketchbook like this is what really makes a difference for new artists.
@@thiagovieira800 yeah it was a very helpful thing Being able to find out what you like so quickly is a big game changer to new artists
