Oh yeah the whole “it’s animated therefor for kids” is how I got into anime. My mom found a collection of gundam wing VHSs at a thrift store and got them for me back in early grade school. Mfs will just say anything and people will agree. Mephiles is like integral to the story, this whole thing just didn’t show it off because that wasn’t what they were going for, but saying he’s a pointless character who “shows up once, kills Sonic, and leaves” simply isn’t true. He’s literally the main villain of the game and is the cause for most of if not all of the events in the story
