Big Day - California January 2025
California has a lot of great birds, especially in winter! This video shows most of the birds I found as I kicked off my 2025 birding year. Can I meet my goals?

Bird names will be changing, according to the powers that be, so I thought I would provide them with some useful suggestions. Birding will be all the better for it.

Such a beautiful variety of birds! Thanks for sharing. Such a beautiful spot, too.
So glad you enjoyed it! Ecuador is truly wonderful.
Yay! Something to look forward to on Mondays, now...
Enjoyed the video! I'm planning a birding trip to Tucson for April 2025 and Sweetwater and Mt Lemmon were two locations I was planning to visit so your video was very helpful!
Thanks so much! Hope you have a great time and find what you are searching for!
Thank you, I enjoyed the video a lot. We are going to the same places next February. Now I can hardly wait, it looked so marvelous! I also appreciated your calm narrative and adding the names of the birds into the video. Lots of information there.
Hope you have a wonderful trip! Thanks for your kind comment.
Great video ❤
Thank you very much!
Good stuff! The Black Phoebe was the first bird I was able to accurately identify... I think?? ;-)
Thanks! They are one of my favorite USA birds!
My favorite place to bird! Really enjoyed your video.
I’ll be going soon, would love to see the trogon, owls, and of course hummingbirds! It will be my first time there. Hope to see a variety of birds, especially ones I don’t see in CA.
Here are some thoughts: my best Trogon luck is to park at top end of Madera Canyon road and follow trail along creek. It is up the trailhead then right. Also, visit Box Canyon to see more "desert-ish" birds, like Costas Hummer, Scott's Oriole, and if you are super lucky a five-striped sparrow. Also, the lower pasture/brush area along the road can be good for thrashers and sparrows, especially early morning.
@@p.b.childbirding333 thanks so much!
I'm from the UK and visited Madera Canyon on April 30th 2023. I accidentally got separated from my friends (who drove and parked further back down the Canyon), so I decided to hike the nature trail down the Canyon to see if I could find them. On my way down I was lucky enough to see the Elegant Trogan twice (probably the same bird) and a Coatimundi.
What a wonderful collection of birds! I did a similar one in Monterey but was unlucky in terms of birds, only saw a dozen I guess. You seem to have seen over 20 different species! Kudos
That was great! You saw so many birds in Texas! I wish I had visited Texas during bird migration. Do you think I can catch similar birds during southern migration in October or so?
I'm in the area for the week. It's been a great time for birding. So a gorgeous osprey among other birds.
Enjoyed the video. Some questions. How long did it take you to get to Santa Cruz Islands? What is the difference between the different plumages? I can't believe you saw a puffin! Were people feeding the fish? It looked like it was getting a little rough when you saw the murrelets.
It is hard to say exactly how long it takes to get to the islands - it is about 35 miles per Google, so say 90 min to two hours directly. Of course, on a pelagic trip it is not direct, we are stopping for birds, so that is highly variable. If I recall correctly, we left at 8 and reached the islands shortly after noon. One could call Island Packers directly for a better answer. Most trips in the channel are not pelagic trips, there are only about 3 or 4 pelagics leaving from Ventura every year. No one was feeding fish on our trip, athough the gulls got a few pieces of popcorn or other loose food. I always take dramamine before the trips and eat ginger cookies during the trip, because even calm days such as this have swells which can bother me. The best birding trips I have had have been on the roughest waters, so I just take it as it comes. I describe the differences in the Craveri's/Scripps murrelet plumage during the video (pause it to read the slide better). The are VERY similar. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
Have you been to Costa Rica?
On the wish list. I am kind of saving that one, as I think I will be able to enjoy that one even when I am a few years older. I am trying to do ones things might be a little physically taxing while I can still pull them off. I am over 65 now.
Awesome so wonderful and beautiful video. Thanks for sharing & big like
So beautiful images! The dog is cute! Thanks for sharing
Awesome video and congratulations with the Elegant Trogon. That’s truly special. I hope to see it one day too.
Thank you! I hope you get to see it, it is magical!

Loved it! Thanks for sharing. So happy you had a great experience!
Well done! Great job
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video. What month were you there?
This video is from April, but like most of the country, late April and early May are great for migrants. Any month there promises super resident birds, however! My wife and I have been there in July, October, and August. All were fun!
Nice and so beautiful video. Thanks you so much so wonderful video
Thank you! I am happy you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the team very interesting a learn something from you.
Thanks! I am happy you enjoyed it!
Love it! Great job on the challenge! 👍
Thanks for watching! The April one looks hard - I got the full bingo card last year, but that "Lifer" square is pretty tough for me, I have most of the US already. Maybe an exotic here in CA? Anyway, I really enjoy all your work and I am rooting for you to succeed in whatever you do.
Thanks for sharing. Love your narration and you talking about how you identify birds! Very handy in the field.
Thank you for the kind words! I am glad you enjoyed it!
More info is always appreciated. Great job, greetings from NorCal Marin Co.
Thanks, I appreciate your comment!
Wonderful ❤
Thanks a lot! Glad you enjoyed it!
Great birds! And congrats on the grandchild. - Ben
Thanks for sharing wonderful video! Also congrats!
I am going to Ecuador next month and LOVED this video!!! This got me so excited!!!
Let us know which birds were your favorites!
Wonderful video! So many cool birds!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Great zoom on the camera. Love the sound of Sandhill Cranes, and great find on the Whooping crane!
What month were you in Tucson?
If I recall correctly it was April. Like most of the US, May has always seemed best, but April is good there too like many southern states. Arizona is always great, really!
My sincere apologies for not responding sooner - I really need to monitor comments better! We were there this time in April, but I have been there several different times and ALWAYS seen good birds of some sort. (April, May, July, August, October, and December come to mind!)
Great video and super numbers!!
Thank you so much!
we are heading there in February - looks like a lot of rain
The rain we had was manageable. Visiting the cloud forest means rain, I guess. Check out my other 3 Ecuador videos!
just got back -was there for 3 week had some rain but prepared for it - the Altitude was more of a challenge but enjoyed the trip@@p.b.childbirding333
I have a life-long desire to see the Cock-on-the-Rock, but I might have to agree about the Plate-Bellied Mountain Toucan.
Fantastic, i'm from Australia and make videos of our birds. Im coming to L.A. later this year and will definitely put this place on my list.
Makes me wanna run down there tomorrow. Good stuff young man👍👍
The birds are so beautiful in Ecuador I would go birding if I lived there.
This was a terrific trip. Thank you again for making and sharing this video. I’m reviewing as I may try to do this again in the first week of December!
That's an amazing trip!
I would enjoy visiting Madera Canyon someday.
Yes you would - it is beautiful!
I think the toucans is Yellow-throated Toucan. Even I can hear the voice of another one.
You could be correct. In theory, we saw both at this location, but they were pretty far off and I was not as confident as I would have liked when seeing the ones called out as "Choco". Or, I may have gotten mixed up on labelling videos. I show a photo of a Choco Toucan I am more confident about at Septimo Paraiso on the Mindo area video (not the hummingbird video).
Love this …..birds are beautiful
Thank you!
Love this. You make me wish I could go there. I love being able to see through your lens
Got all of them in a local lake… the thing about the UK is that most of the common birds are found in every park… I meant the European alternatives that the badger land birding channel gave.
fantastic i like so much
Thank you so much 😀
