Often rooted in autobiographical experience, his explorations of overarching systems of power result in works with both expansive historical sweep and intimate, of-the-moment connection. Hall was the subject of a 2023 solo exhibition at the SCAD Museum of Art, and his work is in the permanent collections of institutions including LACMA; the Dallas Museum of Art; The Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Whitney Museum of American Art; and SFMOMA, among others. Loren's work, both painting and videos, have had a drastic influence on me. His work is so important. Echoing the same sentiment for Katherine as well. Legends here, and such a great example of how priceless generosity of thought can be. Thank you both.
Two of my favourites in the NY art world in this room, Katherine and Loren! 🥰
love seeing loren munk getting some much deserved airtime. hope james kalm was in attendance, the two have many common interests and are both certified paint-heads.
always a great idea to ask a clever artist to curate his "dream" show, his choice are very peculiar and show how of an art lover he is - but his own art is, at best, Vuillard/ bonnard/Munch derivative, middle of the road decorative expressionism..for sure we all know how it is hard to make relevant figurative painting nowadays after all those massive genius who came before our time..
Really bored 😴
I would have enjoyed the paintings much more if not hearing her narrative. Let the art talk maybe?
Rico is the man
Stunning show. I kept thinking MOMA would be nuts not acquire them all. Congrats Loren!
What a amazing show !!!! The painting are world class. Wow !!
Wow congratulations @jameskalm, You deserve the recognition - plus the work is so good!!
Many thanks and gratitude to Phong Bui, Cal McKeever, and the Brooklyn Rain Curatorial Projects staff, along with the folks at Ruttkoski;68 Nils Müller and Benno Tubbesing. This was a wonderful conversation, and I can’t express how generous all the people involved in this talk and project were…JK
I got to look at so much artworks I would have never seen otherwise thru your lens. As an art student from Germany I’m extremely grateful for your work so thank you!
Great slice of what we are witnessing now reaction response en vivo similucra is true stuff here.
💫
Huge Thank you! Very interesting!!!

What we can be not what we are doing now.
Love the way David Byrne suggests imagine what we could do if we cooperated with one another Rather than what is going on now with this moment.
How nice to listen to passionate conversation by this group of experts of Paul Klee's life and work. This podcast should be heard by art students around the world, I'm surprised to see the small footfall. Great job. I've missed this exhibition, not being in the USA, but I am looking forward to visiting the Paul Klee Centre in Bern hopefully not too long from now. Thank you ❤
A late thank you!
I thought this was interesting, but as someone who knew Jon and was around with Sam and Eleanor at the time, I feel obliged to mention the HUGE role Randall Morris and Shari Cavin played in getting Jon the recognition he so richly deserved. They were his first dealers, his close friends, and very emphatic supporters. I spent many hours with Jon and Randall and their relationship was far closer than most artists/gallerists. I find it odd that they seem to have been written out of this story. I’m thrilled to see Jon get some recognition, but Cavin Morris deserve some credit here!
suspiciously ethical.
Good Good Good!
Excellent and inspiring presentation! Worry to have missed it in person, grateful for the UA-cam version.
The expressionalism part is very profound a set up for abstract
wonderful conversation and I totally relate as to the importance of residencies for artists; my work took a pivotal turn for the better after my residency in Spain and gave me a reason to go on! I do wish however that residencies would not be based on recommendations
Do the Thug Shaker
One of the very best of the series. Exposes a relatively unknown talent and speaks to preservation of the work and history. Indispensable.
Thanks for this another info-filled video, worthwhile watch 👍 navigating your videos will better with labeled chapters\sections. I appreciate the work you do. Thank you @ everyone at The Brooklyn Rail and thanks to all contributors as well! Godspeed and Much Love, Marlo Milanco
The work is great ! I also enjoy Her Chicago accent .
gorgeous and vital. thank you x
I remember Nile on MTV Made in 2005. He was made into a rapper called Blizzard. Glad he's doing well in architecture. His father Steven wrote the song Funky Town.
Tumblr paintings lol
Wonderful art and Artist !!
great expression.
Excellent discussion. Down to earth and highly interesting.
Thank You.
Terry Myers is not very good at this. I'd like to hear more from Joe. Artists talking about art (there's and other artists) is much more informative.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
One thing I misspoke in this video was saying that Belson was of German heritage: the family immigration papers said Russian, but he told a friend they were from Latvia. (I only learned this later.) Also, regarding Belson's feelings towards Kandinsky: he very much liked the work very much, it was the writings he didn't much care for.
Wonderful tribute. Makes me wish I could have met Mary Beth; and makes me feel like I have through the recollections from the participants <3
absolutely an inspiration, thank you for sharing this interview.
More dumb ass spoiled brat "golden key" Agents who's keys have only unlocked the gates to their own hells, both in this life and the next.
36:15 Hitchcock nods. I am not an artist, but yes, I do have an albatros existential problem. It keeps me awake at night, its shadow threatening the fries of Buddhist illusion that my Ego munches on whilst taking a stroll on the beach of the collective Unconscious.
31:35 It’s pants, indeed. And buttocks right in front of the standing clown’s face.
30:53 The tiny rectangular protuberance is the clown’s anatomical part which explains the yellow stain on the left side in the previous painting. The harpy managed to existentially avoid the clown taking the piss. The use of slang is not only acceptable here, but required to transmute the reality of city walls on which men inebriated with the nectar of artistic ecstasy splash their inspiring motifs. It’s the archetypal flood of biblical significance. Which explains the harpy subject as a symbol of Eve’s emancipation. Though, of course, me identifying as a ‘she/her’ I fight against the word ‘emancipation’ because it conveys the idea of a woman being ex- man, like Eve out of Adam’s rib.
30:06 Obviously.
29:26 Yes, and yes again. It’s phenomenal phenomenology with a bit of phrenology as the painter was almost blue when she painted this. The profundity of ineffable angst with hues of almost blue that pass as Jungian shadow of the red in another painting the artist will paint in 9 months from now. It is seminal. Seriously.
