We sold our house in Niagara in early 2022, but we hope to return to Niagara soon!
For now, we are in Taiwan and I'll be doing my best to show you the plants of Taiwan 😊

Rescuing a Bodhi Tree in Taiwan
Note: since the roots are established, I switched to one thorough watering per week! No more letting it sit in water.
While walking around in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, I found a bodhi tree (peepal tree, Ficus religiosa) just laying on the ground.
I believe that someone must have ripped it off their wall and thrown it on the ground, judging by the way the root was damaged.
Bodhi trees are very common in Taiwan and as epiphytes, they are found growing in any crack in concrete - especially on apartments and in sidewalks.
Birds eat the fruit of the bodhi tree, which is basically a tiny fig, and deposit the seeds all over the city in their droppings.
I saved this tree I found and it's come back really strong!

Siwei Fragrant Park in Kaohsiung, Taiwan - March 22, 2024
Переглядів 159 місяців тому
This is a typical local park in Taiwan. Surrounded by homes and businesses, this kind of park is medium-sized, featuring a washroom facility, rentable bicycles, a small playground, benches and exercise equipment for adults. The amazing thing about this park in particular are some of the uncommon trees! There's a jackfruit tree with fruit hanging off it. There are several enormous African baobab...

The best cure in the world for kidneys and lymphatic system .😂
The Way 2 Of Them Are Sleeping And One Of Them Gets Flung Is So Adorable.
The sap is latex/rubber
@@johnyork9034 - is it? Cool, I've learned something new!
Hey, Brian, it's Mohammed! Good to see you making plant videos again. I'd say your rescue operation was a success 👍🏼
Thanks, Mohammed! How are your pawpaws doing?
Dude you can touch it it's not going to kill you
@@terrenceherrin8194 - I've heard that it could cause irritation. I'd rather avoid it 😅
Greetings from Germany. I have two Paw Paw, male and female in the garden. The trees produce a lot of rootsuckers. Since I don't have any more space in the garden, I have to tear out the little Paw Paws every week. Almost reminds me of bamboo. If I plant Paw Paw again then only with a Ryzome barrier.
@@stephanm.6250 - it's a blessing to have such healthy trees! Well, perhaps if you just cut them level with the ground, I think that would slow down the growth of pups... tearing them out would damage the mother tree's roots and I think cause another pup to take its place pretty quickly!
Thank you for this video. Is the plant poisonous to the touch or only if you consume it? Does a professional need to remove it? It is similar to touching poison ivy? You talked about the rootball being toxic, but didn't say if it's toxic to the touch.
@@whynot8586 - the plant can be touched very carefully without any ill effects (unless you are super sensitive). There are fine hairs on some parts of the plant which you want to avoid and you'll want to avoid touching any sap or crushed berries or their juice; but even if you do, you may not feel any effects. If any part of the plant is consumed by accident, you will get sick, but probably not die. I would just remove it on my own, wearing gloves! It's pretty low on the toxicity scale.
Maybe an oak?
@@Drpaper1 - 😂
Nice video, have you gotten fruit yet?
@@GUSGUS1331 - thanks! Well, I moved and have the plant away back at the beginning of 2022... I'll never know 😭
Hi sir pls tell kitne week me kitna growth hua h
4:58 you were correct that the the 2 "things" within the embryo are the cotyledons. Instead of emerging out if the ground alongside the stem (as is the case with Norway and Sugar maple), the cotyledons remain underground
are you certain thats a pawpaw? ,it looks more like a magnolia tree.
I believe that weed next to it that puts out blue, or purple flowers. I believe it's the one that also for twenty years puts out a growth inhibitor for the plants around it. I looks nice, but is not worth it.
I know a really big willow I think it’s coming to the end of its life tho
I baught it's roots grown just after 1 day
Paulownia Tomentosa does NOT require cold stratification.
I have seen this and find it nice, but you can take a little bit of solar cells for sunpower for your home.
Could you do another video on growing a tree?
Sure! What kind of tree? What info would you like best?
Can you extract the seed from the tree itself
Did you plant the roots horizontally or vertically?
Do it horizontal
😯 how old do you think that tree is, Brian?
Very informative video but unfortunately there's a lot of unesserary babbling, I don't need to hear anyone eating it...or slow talking to send me to sleep...Just GET TO THE POINT!!!! If someone wants to hear about how to germinate the seeds it's highly unlikely they haven't at least literally just eaten one.
❤
Guabas originated in America
Should that plant be larger after 3 years??? I thought that was a fast growing species
I certainly thought it would be larger! Unfortunately, it only grows super fast in the right conditions; like in Philadelphia or in Hawaii, it lives up to its reputation. In Ontario... it actually grows slower than Tree of Heaven! Still fairly quick, though 😀
Thanks for sharing! I am growing ficus too, but unlike some other videos I have seen on UA-cam mine are growing much slower (same as in your video). In other videos ficus are way bigger than in yours and mine after 3 months. What could be the cause of such a slow growth? Do you have an update on this video? Thanks again :)
You're most welcome, glad you enjoyed it! Unfortunately, I didn't make any update videos on these trees... But, they do grow well and a lot of them grew for two years before I started giving them away. They grew to about 15 - 30 cm tall in 1-2 years. I think the amount of sunlight/light might make them grow slower. I'm in Taiwan right now (where all kinds of ficus grow like weeds) and they grow so fast outside. However, if you started them off inside, don't just take them outside or they'll get burned to death! In this case, you'll have to wait until they're much bigger to start the careful process of introducing outside sun to them.
ขอบคุณมากครับ/ไทยแลนด์
why it took so long? tq for the video. almost threw away my seeds 😂😂
Sometimes, they take longer if they're not "cold stratified" (kept in refrigerator for 3-6 months) first! Great to hear that your seeds started growing!
I have read lots of info, one said low chance but worth to do is take cuttings from under 7 months old seedlings, one I read said take winter cuttings. I have tried air-layering but failed. :(
I think you should give air layering another try. I know that a tree farm in Niagara Falls has lots of success with air layering!
@@treelife365 I have done my research online and professional books they all said would not work, that is same result as my tries. But from runners with little bit roots would have high successful rate for sure! In the botanical book I have, said it can be propagated by winter cuttings, so I will try that this winter.
@@janemyfoodandflowers7726 - any method is worth a try, as long as you keep the mother plant healthy 🙂 The runners/pups that I got were from a really healthy and older mother plant, and I made sure to get a big piece of root when I dug each up. 100% survived!
LOVE WILLOW TREES!!!!! Ohio has a ton of them!!
They are indeed spectacular!
Any updates on the tree?
It grew well, Nick (you can see some updates during my "Garden Updates" videos), but I sold my house and gave all my plants away in January 2022!
Aaesome
That’s a mango tree !
Yes, indeed! Mango grows easily in Taiwan 😊
Excellent. Thanks very much.
Hope the video helped!
So nice to see all those plants :) keep um coming Brian
I'm glad you think so, and I will! I'll do a longer video if I see anything worthy 😉
Looks waterlogged. They prefer more sand.
Thanks for the recommendation!
Thank you for all that good information. I will now try to transplant some of my pups.
You're most welcome, Charlotte! Good luck!
My tree has many root suckers. Are they identical? Will they profuce fruits?
The root suckers/pups are identical in DNA to the mother... and they can produce fruit when they're mature (6-7 years old), but they need to be pollinated by another tree!
Guys, please don’t grow these. They are SUPER invasive.
They're definitely really invasive somewhere like Philadelphia, but up here in Ontario, there are actually several mature trees growing in the Niagara Botanical Gardens (they produce seeds), but there hasn't been an invasion! Even the ones I grew actually kind of struggled to grow very fast (I was disappointed!). A wild Tree of Heaven was actually growing faster than my biggest Empress Tree!
@@treelife365 I just know they are a problem where I live in the south east US
I really love seeing these videos of Taiwan... you should do some longer videos like this Brian :)
Glad you enjoy them, Jay! I could definitely try some longer videos... how about a series of shorts?
Beautiful trees 😍😍😍 Thanks for sharing this Brian... Love seeing Taiwan.
Glad you enjoyed seeing it, Jay! I realized that I haven't been active on UA-cam at all... going to try to upload more 😆
How do you actually handle the spouting plant from the seed when planting
Hi Carl! Well, just very, very carefully. Some people use tweezers, but I use my fingers and try not to move them around too much. For example, when potting, the planted seedling doesn't have to be standing up; just as long as the roots are under the soil.
That so cool to see Banana trees in that environment
This tree is just amazing!.. cant thank you enough for sharing all these cool parts of Taiwan... stunning!
Glad you enjoyed seeing them. I should share more! I've been slacking 🤣
Hiya Brian I hope your keeping well... just wanted to drop in on you and see if your ok bud :)
Doing well, but haven't updated or gone on UA-cam in a while! I think I'll have more time for that kinda stuff in the summer months 😊 Glad to see that your bonsai adventures continue, Jay!
@@treelife365 As long as your ok and well my friend look forward to seeing your future video :)
Very interesting! Just bought my first paulownia tomentosa just to see how it grows. Now I learn I can easily have more should I wish. Thanks. Good to know others have problems with our busy friend the squirrel.
Good luck with your first Empress Tree, Jengold! Yes, we gardeners are all familiar with our good friend, Squirrelly-Sqoo 😆
Hello from Germany. We would like to plant several of these along the side of our home, however we have a question about the root system of the tree. Do they normally grow wide, and are they know to breakthrough retaining walls if planted close to neighboring properties? Any help is much appreciated. @briantreelife.
Hi Brandon! They usually grow much taller than wide and the root system is very fibrous. My advice would be to go ahead and plant near your retaining wall; it's actually a myth that tree roots damage walls. Usually, the wall is already damaged and the tree roots simply go into the cracks because of available moisture. Then, when the wall is being repaired, people see tree roots and blame the tree! I was digging around my basement wall with a 100-year-old black walnut tree nearby... the basement wall was in good condition and there were huge black walnut roots going alongside the wall, but not into it!
I would give the trees as much horizontal space around the trunk as you'd give any other tree 👍
What dirt did you used?
Hi Allen! I just used bagged "topsoil" from a supermarket garden centre. If they sell a lot of them, they're very fresh and good to use for all purposes.
I'm happy to report that the paw paws survived 2 winters now. They grow very slowly and are still about a foot tall. I hope they put on a lot of growth now that they're well rooted. I'm looking forward to seeing how they do this summer.
Awesome to hear, Mohammad! Thanks for keeping me updated 😊 I'm glad they've survived, which means that they'll probably do really well this growing season... but yeah, they are slow growers! Keep me updated 😊
