Rescuing a Bodhi Tree in Taiwan
Note: since the roots are established, I switched to one thorough watering per week! No more letting it sit in water.
While walking around in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, I found a bodhi tree (peepal tree, Ficus religiosa) just laying on the ground.
I believe that someone must have ripped it off their wall and thrown it on the ground, judging by the way the root was damaged.
Bodhi trees are very common in Taiwan and as epiphytes, they are found growing in any crack in concrete - especially on apartments and in sidewalks.
Birds eat the fruit of the bodhi tree, which is basically a tiny fig, and deposit the seeds all over the city in their droppings.
I saved this tree I found and it's come back really strong!

Siwei Fragrant Park in Kaohsiung, Taiwan - March 22, 2024

This is a typical local park in Taiwan. Surrounded by homes and businesses, this kind of park is medium-sized, featuring a washroom facility, rentable bicycles, a small playground, benches and exercise equipment for adults. The amazing thing about this park in particular are some of the uncommon trees! There's a jackfruit tree with fruit hanging off it. There are several enormous African baobab...

    Greetings from Germany. I have two Paw Paw, male and female in the garden. The trees produce a lot of rootsuckers. Since I don't have any more space in the garden, I have to tear out the little Paw Paws every week. Almost reminds me of bamboo. If I plant Paw Paw again then only with a Ryzome barrier.

    • @treelife365
      @treelife365 4 місяці тому

      @@stephanm.6250 - it's a blessing to have such healthy trees! Well, perhaps if you just cut them level with the ground, I think that would slow down the growth of pups... tearing them out would damage the mother tree's roots and I think cause another pup to take its place pretty quickly!

    Thank you for this video. Is the plant poisonous to the touch or only if you consume it? Does a professional need to remove it? It is similar to touching poison ivy? You talked about the rootball being toxic, but didn't say if it's toxic to the touch.

    • @treelife365
      @treelife365 4 місяці тому

      @@whynot8586 - the plant can be touched very carefully without any ill effects (unless you are super sensitive). There are fine hairs on some parts of the plant which you want to avoid and you'll want to avoid touching any sap or crushed berries or their juice; but even if you do, you may not feel any effects. If any part of the plant is consumed by accident, you will get sick, but probably not die. I would just remove it on my own, wearing gloves! It's pretty low on the toxicity scale.

    Thanks for sharing! I am growing ficus too, but unlike some other videos I have seen on UA-cam mine are growing much slower (same as in your video). In other videos ficus are way bigger than in yours and mine after 3 months. What could be the cause of such a slow growth? Do you have an update on this video? Thanks again :)

    • @treelife365
      @treelife365 Рік тому

      You're most welcome, glad you enjoyed it! Unfortunately, I didn't make any update videos on these trees... But, they do grow well and a lot of them grew for two years before I started giving them away. They grew to about 15 - 30 cm tall in 1-2 years. I think the amount of sunlight/light might make them grow slower. I'm in Taiwan right now (where all kinds of ficus grow like weeds) and they grow so fast outside. However, if you started them off inside, don't just take them outside or they'll get burned to death! In this case, you'll have to wait until they're much bigger to start the careful process of introducing outside sun to them.

    Hello from Germany. We would like to plant several of these along the side of our home, however we have a question about the root system of the tree. Do they normally grow wide, and are they know to breakthrough retaining walls if planted close to neighboring properties? Any help is much appreciated. @briantreelife.

    • @treelife365
      @treelife365 Рік тому

      Hi Brandon! They usually grow much taller than wide and the root system is very fibrous. My advice would be to go ahead and plant near your retaining wall; it's actually a myth that tree roots damage walls. Usually, the wall is already damaged and the tree roots simply go into the cracks because of available moisture. Then, when the wall is being repaired, people see tree roots and blame the tree! I was digging around my basement wall with a 100-year-old black walnut tree nearby... the basement wall was in good condition and there were huge black walnut roots going alongside the wall, but not into it!
