Absorb the atmosphere of Isla Vista (IV) with a brief cycling tour. Up and down a few streets, past food delivery agents, lots of folks traveling to parties, and too many poorly parked scooters to count. All captured on a beautiful winter afternoon.

Homemade Lifting Platform with Squat Stand - 3 Minute Superspeed Build
Переглядів 47 тис.9 років тому
Our weekend project. A simple lifting platform (5 pieces of plywood, some wood screws, a lot of liquid nails, a horse stall mat) and a Rogue S-2 Squat Stand on top. Turned out quite nicely. Very sturdy. It took around 3.5 hours total, but I condensed it into 3 minutes to be tolerable. Music: "Boop" by Podington Bear (podingtonbear.com/)

2013 Mac Pro Ping Pong Test
Переглядів 4 тис.10 років тому
A few people around the interwebs wanted to know if the new 2013 Mac Pro could float a ping pong ball with its fans. So I decided to test it out. The CPUs were pegged using the Cinebench benchmark app in addition to some other tasks I was doing at the same time. This is a stock quad core machine that does not belong to me.

The Napping of Jackie Thumbs: Part One

One position is never good enough for a cat. So here I attempt to capture a small cross-section from his repertoire. There's no audio for this one. He's not exactly a noisy napper.
Why do all the guys talk the exact same lmao. It’s such a punchable voice
Thank you for this. A lot of people have a lot of memories of that place!
I grew up in Isla Vista when I was 6, I whet to Isla Vista Elementary.. That was 50 yrs ago.. So many things have changed, There used to be wild packs of feral dogs that would chase everyone one on bicycles, you would have to beat them with a club.. They were known to kill people. Other than that everything was so fun and laid back as a 6 yr old.... Loved It.
I lived Oceanside DP around the 16 minute mark.
Kook
Lived in IV back in the early eighties. Many things are still the same. There were some great bands back then that set up on the weekends. Dancing barefoot in the streets. The foot patrol has upgraded to electric bikes. They rode stingray bikes in the eighties. Perry's Pizza is gone. Wonderful memories. It was a good place to call home.
Thanks, I lived there for 9 years between 2000 and 2009, it felt like a week...
When was this filmed?
February 2023
"HOME SWEET HOME"...
It’s a shame Isla Vista has a dark past due to the horrific events that took place on the night of May 23rd 2014
Yeah bro
Cool to see the house I lived at in 1988!
Amazing !
Nice cloud formation
excellent
'promo sm' 🤪
Thanks for this. I haven’t been in Isla Vista since 2009. And that was only for a drive through as I moved out in 1994!
Why did you leave
There were no jobs in my industry.
@@andya2671 it looks more like a retirement spot for people that leave los angel
Fantastic. Campus still looks amazing. Request- biking through IV.
I second that request.
How much should a 150 lb man bench?
Is it me or is that platform still sloping at the same tilt as the garage floor?
Wish you would've showed the entire base and stand together, so we could get a better look of what the entire thing looks like and how much space you have infront of the rack
Solid lifting platform!
Seems pretty pointless when you already have bumper plates
Considering the floor is uneven, the platform helped greatly. Plus, we're not doing burpees on that cold/hard concrete :)
@@MindTheInk Is there a slope in your garage and did you have to level the platform at all after construction?
@@ethanbreach1128 There's a very slight slope, but not enough to make a difference during workouts. If it was more severe, I would have cut some of the horse mats into little strips and used those to correct it. Maybe use some marbles or ball bearings to test where it is uneven.
2 years ago when u could replace broken bumper plates easily. Not anymore take care of your plates , build the god damen platform.
Do you guys have actual footage squatting with the platform or working out on it?
Interesting....what did you do to secure the squat stand?
The weight of the stand and gravity did the job. We had some brackets ready to go, but they weren't needed.
@jm apple I don't see why not. If you don't use the rack to store plates (and therefore lots of weight), and you're considering doing kipping pull-ups, then bracketing it on the inside and outside would help. Even without the bar or weights, most of the mass is centrally located. And the brackets are small enough that they're not going to get in the way of any activity. Plus, we didn't secure this and it hasn't moved an inch in 5 years. But your use case may vary.
@jm apple The front brackets are extremely tall (you can see one @2:53 in the lower right corner). They wouldn't fit in the back. It'd have to be something custom that fit over the cross bar along the floor to provide enough stability to matter.
Cool. We wanted the extra security of the glue. And you can't really screw in the stall mats without making them uneven, so it was glue for those as well.
Wow! Pretty much exactly What I have been planning over the past few days. Except I was just going to screw the 4x8 together in case I ever needed to move them.
good
You sure fans were on max? Use this little utility to get them to run at max speed: www.lobotomo.com/products/FanControl/
Yeah, I used a utility just like this to max it out. If the ball was the same weight but the size of a softball, I think it'd work. The air is just not focused on a small enough area to make it work.
MindTheInk Hmm. I tried a ball of tissue on mine and it has the power to blow it into orbit. It won't stay centred though, perhaps because it's not perfectly spherical (I hope!). Methinks we need jumbo ping pong balls! www.amazon.com/Jumbo-Table-Tennis-Balls-Pack/dp/B005HT3XR6
Just got one in the office today to use as an iOS build server, and this was going to be tomorrow's test. Thanks for saving me the bother! :-)
I think you just need a bigger ping pong ball. The center of the top doesn't have any wind coming out, just the rim, right?
A bigger (and lighter) ball might work. The air comes out the rim, not the center, so it would definitely need more surface area if it was going to work.
MindTheInk A balloon, inflated to the same diameter as the Mac Pro should work then.
Were both GPUs going full out? I'd like to see this test redone with the top end mac pro having it's CPU and GPU's fully stressed.
I tested it with a utility that also maxed out the fan speed but there was no change, sadly.
MindTheInk Hmm. disappointing. That won't stop me trying when mine finally gets delivered though! Perhaps a lighter ping pong ball.
Disappointing result - thanks for posting though, the world has been waiting!
No problem. :) The ball did, however, swirl round and round when I just left it in the top. So that's something.
